Draft:Next on Cinemax Bumpers

From the Audiovisual Identity Database, the motion graphics museum

Background

Cinemax didn't have a Next on Cinemax ID until 1980.

1st Bumper (1984-1989)

Visuals: There are some shapes in the background while the old Cinemax logo fades in with letter by letter of forming the words "Cinemax", and a cursive writer says "Next on", making "Next on Cinemax". A movie/show/session name fades in at the bottom. After the announcer is finished, the Cinemax logo comes out and zooms in until it's uncomfortably very close to the screen (kind of like in-your-face animation).

Technique: 2D animation.

Audio: A 80s rock tune, a writing sound, a jazz sounder and then another 80s rock tune when the Cinemax logo zooms in. And whoever is the announcer is announcing the movie's name, plot, and starring cast.

2nd Bumper (1989-1997)

Visuals: There is a filmstrip with scrambled/mixed up versions of the word "Next", and then a mixed-up version of the Cinemax logo appears. Then, "Next on" and the Cinemax logo fly over onto the center, and then the "Next on" words vanish. Whatever movie or show they are showing fades in at the bottom. After the announcer is finished, the Cinemax logo appears close to the screen just flops around until the screen fades to black.

Technique: CGI

Audio: A twinkling sound, and then a '90s rock tune.

3rd Bumper (1997-2001)

Visuals: The logo starts with "next on" and the new Cinemax logo appear on the left top side. On the right is the genre (like Suspense), and the movie name (like Evita), and the date (like 1995), and it stays there until the feature presentation, or a preview shows up.

Technique: CGI.

Audio: A sly acid jazz tune.

4th Bumper (Late 2001-2003)

Visuals: Unknown

Technique: Unknown

Audio: Unknown

5th Bumper (2003-2008)

Visuals: There is a dark black background, with a floor that looks to be made of liquid, and the then-current Cinemax logo with "max" replaced by "next". The movie or show they are showing next appears, with the the date, genre and duration of the movie, with the actors from the movie written below. And then there is the Cinemax logo from before, making a white flash that changes the word "next" to "max".

Technique: Unknown

Audio: An electro-rock theme.

6th Bumper (2008-2011)

Visuals: On a pale blue background, the name of the next feature in white is shown, with three of the actors in black underneath. After a while, "next" and the MaxHD logo cut in.

Variant: Before showings of some more recent movies, a special variant was used, which shows a scene from the movie in place of the usual background and the actor names in white.

  • A sub-variant was used promoting Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem, where there are no actor names and "NEXT" (now in all-caps) and the MaxHD logo cut in at the same time.

Technique: 2D animation.

Audio: An acoustic guitar tune.

Audio Variants:

  • On rare occasions, one of two different music cues was used, one of which is a gong banging.
  • The variant features whatever audio plays in the scene.

Availability: It was only used for four years.
