Background

WGAL is the NBC affiliate station of Central Pennsylvania. It first went on the air on March 18, 1949, on channel 4, as a CBS/DuMont affiliate. They later switched to channel 8 in 1952, to prevent nearby interference with WRC-TV. Their headquarters are located on Columbia Avenue in Lancaster, PA. They are most well known for covering the partial meltdown of nearby Three Mile Island and hosting the annual Coats for Kids telethon.

1st Logo (1979–1986)

Visuals: On a black background, there is WGAL logo from the time (A red rounded rectangle with the white text "WGAL•TV" next to a stylized 8), with the additional text "Lancaster" below in white. Above, there is the NBC peacock logo from the time.

Technique: A still graphic.

Audio: Just an announcer saying "This is WGAL-TV 8, Lancaster."

Availability: Seen before WGAL newscasts.

2nd Logo (1982-1990)

Visuals: Over a video of a Central PA landmark, the WGAL logo from the previous logo is seen below, fading in. Below the logo is the text "Lancaster, PA".

Variants:

  • Sometimes, the video is replaced by a blue background with the WGAL logo tiled across.
  • The blue background version was used as a bumper, with program information above the logo. There are also some gold lines behind the logo.
  • An animated version exists. Here, the logo spins in quickly and settles in its standard position.
  • When the channel celebrated its 35th anniversary, the animated version would play, and the text, "
