DreamWorks Animation/Logo Variations

From the Audiovisual Identity Database, the motion graphics museum

These are the logo variations seen throughout the years by DreamWorks Animation, with more to be added overtime.

Shark Tale (2004):

  • After the logo is finished, the screen fades into a closer shot of the fishing boy, who throws his fishing rod (and an earthworm that's on its hook) into the water, leading into the prologue. On 35mm open matte film scan prints, along with the film itself, the logo is seen at a much farther distance.

Shrek franchise:

  • Shrek the Third (2007): Storm clouds begin to form and cover the logo. Meanwhile, the camera pans down to start the movie. The logo also has been slightly re-animated, with somewhat noticeable changes including different placement of the camera and balloons and certain objects going over the clouds instead of through them.
  • Scared Shrekless (2010 short): An off-screen wolf can be heard howling. The boy gets scared by the howl and jumps behind the moon. A few seconds later, he peeks out from behind the moon. Also the "DREAMWORKS" text appears weirdly, with the text smaller, and the "E" and "A" not being connected.

  • Puss in Boots: The Trident (2023, short): The DreamWorks logo appears in the sky above a battle between Puss and a Kraken.

Bee Movie (2007):

  • Normal logo, but the camera pauses moving when the moon is seen. Barry B. Benson (voiced by Jerry Seinfeld) flies by a few seconds in, and the boy repeatedly shoos him. Barry stings the boy, and he accidentally lets go of his balloons and injures his groin, then tumbles and hits his head and falls off the moon. Barry then takes the boy's spot on the moon, and the text fades in. The boy's voice is also revealed in this variant.

  • At the end of the film, bees from the closing credits fly past to wipe from the 2002 Paramount Pictures logo to the normal DreamWorks Animation logo.

Kung Fu Panda franchise:

  • Kung Fu Panda (2008) and Secrets of the Furious Five (2008 short): The logo starts out with an animal wearing a hat climbing up houses and clouds and working his way up until he reaches the moon. It sits on the moon and takes out a fishing rod, which he uses to pull up the rest of the DreamWorks Animation logo. This is accompanied by an oriental rendition of "Fairytale", by Hans Zimmer and John Powell. The logo is done in the animation style used in the beginning of the movie. On the latter, the logo fades in a little later.
  • Kung Fu Panda 2 (2011): The logo starts out over a row of houses. Several flower petals from a couple of peach trees are blown up to the sky, where the moon is residing. The flower petals then form the spirit of Master Oogway, who brings up the rest of the logo from below with a fishing rod (similar to the logo variant from the first film). The logo is also in the animation style used in the beginning of the movie, just like in the first film.
  • Secrets of the Masters (2011 short): The logo is set at night with clouds moving fast with the name and moon in blue, and is done in the style of the short. It then pans down as the short begins.
  • Secrets of the Scroll (2015 short): The logo is done in an origami-like style, with the moon and text in white. Oogway can be seen on the moon, wielding something in his arm. Then it pans down to start the short.
  • Kung Fu Panda 3 (2016): The logo starts with Po (voiced by Jack Black) running up a mountain with stairs, and getting increasingly tired while doing so. When he reaches the top, he says "Okay, guys, just start without me", but then flops onto the moon next to the mountain's summit, gets comfortable and pulls out a fishing rod to bring up the rest of the logo (like the variants for the first two films above). This is all done in the same animation style as the variants from the previous films.
  • Kung Fu Panda 4 (2024): Unlike the previous films, the normal logo with its fanfare is used. At the end, the logo fades to the opening scene with the moon.

Madagascar franchise and Penguins of Madagascar:

  • Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa (2008): The logo plays normally, until the camera pauses on the boy sitting on the moon, with the text fading in below, like the Bee Movie variant. Skipper (voiced by Tom McGrath) hits the boy (voiced by Jeffrey Katzenberg) and drags him through the moon. A fight can be heard and soon the penguins appear together. Skipper then uses the rod to catch a fish, saying, "Well done, boys. Looks like ice cold sushi for breakfast." They all do their high fives as the camera pans down to start the movie. Additionally, there are more clouds surrounding the boy, the product with the Moon Boy is different, and the music is slightly re-orchestrated.
  • Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted (2012): The space background is replaced with a blue sky, the text and moon are in a glowing blue color, and the camera pans down to start the movie when the logo is complete.
  • Madly Madagascar (2013): Exactly like in Scared Shrekless, but it uses the color scheme of the sky and clouds from the Madagascar 3 variant and the fishing boy stays at his usual pose the whole time.
  • Penguins of Madagascar (2014): The logo's variant is part of the prologue, a glacier calves, revealing the logo. The crescent part of the moon also calves to reveal the Penguins, standing on each other's shoulders and holding a fishing rod.

Monsters vs. Aliens (2009):

  • It is the last movie to use the 2004 logo. Almost the same as Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa, but is in black and white and seen in 2.39:1 aspect ratio, with the camera centered to the boy and the moon, with the final product being zoomed out further than usual. While the logo is almost over, the music winds down to a close while a UFO abducts the boy. After this, the logo shakes and burns (a la 16mm film) to begin the opening sequence. The "DREAMWORKS" text is also purely in white compared to the normal logo. On 3D prints of the film, this variant is shown in 2D before transitioning to 3D as the logo burns.

How to Train Your Dragon franchise:

  • How to Train Your Dragon (2010): It's the first film to use the 2010 logo. Toothless is flying in the sky of the logo. When the logo finishes, it becomes a reflection in the water and gradually fades into the opening of the movie.
  • Book of Dragons (2011 short): The 2010 logo plays normally, but towards the middle, it turns into an aged paper. After it's formed, a dragon comes in and breathes fire, segueing to the beginning.
  • How to Train Your Dragon 2 (2014): Same as the first film, but Toothless doesn't fly through the sky and the logo reflects in a water differently.

Megamind franchise:

  • Megamind (2010) The logo plays as usual, although there are no clouds after the boy throws them out with the hook. When it finishes, a sun casts over it as the logo turns black, which is shown on the opening scene of the film. An epic orchestral version of "Fairytale" by Hans Zimmer and Lorne Balfe plays during the logo.

  • Megamind: The Button of Doom (2011 short): Same as the earlier variant, but the standard logo is used instead. and the animation is blurry. At the end of it, it gliches and unpixelazes seguing into opening of the short. Also the orchestral version of "Fairytale" is stopped by the weird reverse sounds.

Rise of the Guardians (2012):

  • It's snowing, the boy is replaced by Jack Frost, the logo animates differently, and when it's complete, the text freezes and dissolves into snow.

The Croods franchise:

  • The Croods (2013): A 3D ember is seen floating around and revealing the logo, which is done in the style of a prehistoric cave painting. After it gets done it craves out seguing into the opening of the film. On FXM prints, the film starts at the logo already formed.
  • The Croods: A New Age (2020): In the darkness, Belt can be seen holding a torch whilst igniting it. Successfully doing so, he moves the torch down to reveal the text in orange. He then says his catchphrase before resting on the crescent. He looks at us before the screen fades out.

Turbo (2013):

  • The logo is in a shade of white on a light blue background. As the animation is complete, the camera pans quickly down to start the movie. There is a very noticeable animation error with this variant.

Home franchise:

  • Almost Home (2014 short): As soon as the logo finishes forming, it fades into the moon to begin the short.
  • Home (2015): The logo is initially seen in its finished form. After a few seconds, a blue tube drops down at the top and sucks the boy, causing the fishing rod to spin in mid-air. One of the Boov drops down in the place of the boy, the blue tube rises up quickly, and a Boov catches the fishing rod, causing the logo to animate in reverse, but the clouds are kept clear. First, the line, "ANIMATION SKG" and the "TM" symbol fade out. As the camera zooms forward to the fishing Boov, the letters of "DREAMWORKS" fly away. The fishing Boov fades out and the Boov' ship flies slowly around the moon as the camera goes inside through one of the lights to the opening.

Rocky and Bullwinkle and Friends franchise:

  • Mr. Peabody and Sherman (2014): Sherman replaces the boy on the moon, and the logo appears in space, with the moon in white with white clouds surrounding it, and the name is in a shade of dark violet. When it finishes, Sherman and the text fade out and the camera pans down to start the movie.

  • Rocky and Bullwinkle (2014 short): The logo is tinted in various hues of purple and pink, and is animated in the style of the original show. Rocky replaces the boy in the moon, and as he moves his fishing rod is that he fished Bullwinkle. The text is in a different, more cartoony font, and a more comedic rendition of "Fairytale" by Tony Morales plays in the background.

Trolls franchise: In general, the logo is in the form of scrapbook images, with a Troll in the moon and a varying music form.

  • Trolls (2016): The logo is sped up with the "Animation SKG" byline doesn't appear under the "Dreamworks" text and shortly after it gets done a purple background page turns with a drawing of the boy on the moon. Stars appear one by one, and the letters drop down all together, in the Cooper font. They arrange themselves, and troll hair from the film appears on the boy before the page flips to the prologue. Also, the theme is sung in acapella by a group of Trolls.
  • Trolls World Tour (2020): It has a similar look and animation to original film, but the background is different, the 'DREAMWORKS' text is in its normal font and the Comcast byline, in orange, is below the text. A troll then drops into the crescent (which actually looks like Barb). To represent that rock music is the music-genre antagonist, a three-pointed red hair drops in on top of it, followed by an electric guitar. The troll plays the guitar while scatting to it. The page flips to the film's prologue. This variation is shown after the DreamWorks Animation 25 Years logo.
  • Trolls Band Together (2023): It is the first movie to use the wraped characters variant of the 2022 logo, what plays as normal. Shortly after it gets is formed, a cyan background with a white cutout of the logo appears (with a troll, drawn in the same way as the sky, replacing the Moon Child on the DreamWorks symbol). Like the previous film, the 'DREAMWORKS' text retains its normal typeface on the scrapbook page. Various details are then added to the logo: magenta and orange clouds, stars of various colors, and pink hair for the troll (making it resemble Poppy) who later winks. The theme (which is also low-pitched) also gets remixed into the opening theme, which is the first few bars of Perfect.

  • It Takes Three (2024): The DreamWorks logo appears in the sky with no clouds and blue background.

The Boss Baby (2017) and The Boss Baby: Family Business (2021):

  • The logo is in the form of a mobile on a similar sky background to that of the DreamWorks Pictures logo, with the text at the top and the print version of the boy on the moon (four of them, for that matter) can be seen hanging from it, along with other various objects usually seen on a mobile. It then pans down to start the movie. A music box rendition of the theme is used.
  • For The Boss Baby: Family Business, there is extra animation at the start before the theme begins, and this time, the logo brightens up into a white light to start the movie. Also, the "SKG" text in "ANIMATION SKG" is removed.

Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie (2017):

  • It's the last movie to use the 2010 logo. George Beard (voiced by Kevin Hart) and Harold Hutchins (voiced by Thomas Middleditch) are heard humming the last part of the logo's theme.

Spirit Untamed (2021):

  • The logo fades into the opening shot after it completes.

The Bad Guys franchise:

  • The Bad Guys (2022): The logo is initially seen in its finished form, minus the boy and the text. Just then, a grappling hook flies up to the moon, and Mr. Wolf (from the film) climbs up the hook's rope and onto the moon before kicking off the hook and relaxing, as the text and byline fade in. The clouds slowly zoom in during all of this. Also, the opening score by Daniel Pemberton used in the Universal logo carries over into this logo, ending when it fades out.
  • A concept logo for the film's original opening has it tinted in sepia. As the moon carves in, Wolf appears from it with a stolen bag of cash.
  • Maraschino Ruby (2022, short): The logo is sepia again and appears on a newspaper.

Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken (2023):

  • After it finishes, the logo ripples and dissipates into the jellyfish creatures seen in the movie, transitioning into the opening scene.

DreamWorks All-Star Kart Racing (2023; Video Game):

  • Players can get access to a selection of custom parts designed to represent the DreamWorks logo (a blue chassis with clouds, and the moon as a hubcap on the tires).
  • The DreamWorks logo's setting was adapted as a race track titled "Galactic Sky". The video shown below shows the gameplay footage of the track.

Orion and the Dark (2024, Netflix):

  • Transitioning off of the "Netflix Presents" tag, on a school notebook cover, the moon draws in, followed by the "DREAMWORKS" text, which lacks the Comcast byline. A few clouds fly by, and the stars appear after that. A scared Orion pops out of the moon and draws a light switch on the moon. He turns it on, causing the background to turn bright and white (representing the inside), Orion gaining color (except for his skin), the stars to disappear and the text to be multicolored (as a reference to the 2004 logo). He then sits on the moon and breathes a sigh of relief. The page later flips to the opening shot.
  • At the end of the film, the normal logo is tinted in a shade of light blue.
