I've been thinking lately that our instant-block approach to the single account rule is dated, perhaps a relic of our drama-filled past on WF. I'm concerned that our current approach to this may be driving off good-faith contributors who simply changed their minds about what username they wanted and were unfamiliar with the Global Rename system or who may have reapplied due to a glitch of some sort. I think that if someone joins, then makes another account without showing any disruptive intentions, we should at first warn them on their talk page about our account policy. The warning could look like this:

This sounds like a good idea. However, you misspelled "additional" as "addtional". |

Don't get me wrong, this is a great idea, and I say we should implement it. It's just that, for every person who signs up with two accounts who isn't doing it out of malice, did it by mistake, or want to simply change their name, there's about 15 more who do the same to evade bans and/or just to spam. It was especially awful back in the WF days where people abused WF's extremely glitchy banning system to create dozens upon dozens of sockpuppets and then cancel them to avoid being banned....though that's in the past now. But anyway, go ahead. This could be very useful for the website. |
