Background

Globo Video was the home video distribution arm owned by Brazilian mass media conglomerate Organizações Globo, best kwown as the owners of the Rede Globo TV network. It was founded in 1981[1] as a successor of Filmoteca Global, which released documentaries and other special programmes for universities and other educational institutions. In the mid-80s, Globo Video entered the consumer market; releasing not only Rede Globo's programmes, but a variety of Brazilian films and titles from Embassy Home Entertainment, Orion Pictures (until 1990, when LK-TEL Video took over) and Nelson Entertainment libraries, among other companies.

The label was deactivated in the mid-90s and was brought back in the 2000s as a sister label for Som Livre Video, focusing only on TV Globo's productions. It the mid-2000s, it was fused with the brand new Globo Marcas label; operating until 2014.

1st Logo (1981-1984)

Visuals: On a black background, many colored bars slide in, forming 5 columns colored blue, light green, yellow, orange, and red respectively. 4 columns rotate to the right or left, but not fully (the yellow column stays put). They turn the other way and fully rotate to their original position. They zoom out a bit as stars line the edges touching the other columns and they start to spin. They then flash when they are just thin lines and then pulse lines of the same color and then start to rotate when they are fully revealed. They then disappear as the letters of "GLOBO" in its signature typeface appear one by one in the colors of the columns. They then turn white and start to come together as the background gains a blue gradient. "VIDEO" in the same font but in outline form slides in and rests as the "V" changes position.

Technique: CGI.

Audio: A funky and weird disco tune, with a horn-driven finale.

Availability: Found on Globo Informática.

2nd Logo (1984-1988)

Visuals: There is a cube made of green wire frame rotating wildly. The cube rotates so that we can see a first-person perspective inside, which reveals many lines in many different colors. The colors move up and down the grid, thus causing the lines to change colors as well. We then see multiple squares zoom in on each plane of the inner cube. They state different words on them, most of which are hard to view. The last square zooms in to fit. It has a word on one of the squares that pass by (each represent a genre on the video, like "SHOW" or "FILME"). This square zooms out. and abruptly transitions to Scanimated letters, which occupy the entire screen and are rotated 45 degrees on the Z axis. The words then rotate to a normal angle, revealing the words "GLOBO VIDEO". "UMA SELEÇÃO" sometimes is stationed at the top as well.

Technique: Early wireframe computer graphics combined with 2D computer animation.

Audio: A whoosh at the beginning, then a powerful and dramatic fanfare with laser beams, with an uprising synth when the almost final screen flies towards the camera.

Availability: Seen on early VHS releases of Globo programmes, like Xou da Xuxa, and films from the Embassy Home Entertainment library, like Escape from New York.

3rd Logo (1988-Mid 90s)

Visuals: On a rainbow background, three spheres (in red, green, and blue respectively) pass by the screen quickly. When we reach the blue sphere, it protrudes light and a chunk shaped like the Rede Globo logo comes off of it. Inside the shiny interior is the same rainbow surface and spheres before the sphere turns around and the background turns black. Silver streaks are then "projected" at the piece like a screen, and there emerges the Globo Video logo with "APRESENTA" below it. The logo shines as the screen focuses onto it, eventually taking up the whole screen.

Technique: CGI.

Audio: A calm synth fanfare.

Availability: Spotted on The Terminator, Prom Night, and other titles from TV Globo, Embassy, Orion Pictures and Nelson Entertainment.

4th Logo (2000-2006)

Visuals: Over a black/blue gradient background, the metallic text of "GLOBO VIDEO" flips out to the center while red, green and blue streaks slide into the left side, crossing the "L" and "V". The finished logo is in a left-facing perspective.

Technique: CGI by Globograph.

Audio: A majestic fanfare with a whoosh at the beginning. Low and high tone versions are known to exist.

Availability: Seen on newer releases from TV Globo programmes, like TV Pirata and Vale Tudo.
