Not to be confused with the Australian hardware store chain of the same name.

Background

Home Hardware Stores, Ltd. is a Canadian retail store chain founded in 1964 by Walter Hachborn. Its products include furniture, tools, appliances, home decor, gardening equipment, and home improvement.

1st Logo (Early 80s)

Visuals: On a cloudy sky blue backdrop, there is a woman dressed in red and a man dressed in black raising their legs upward as they turn into silhouettes, colored to matched their clothing. The silhouettes morph into two lowercase "h"s stylized to resemble a chimney as the rest of the then-current Home Hardware logo forms. The red words "HOME OF THE HANDYMAN", with "HOME OF THE" stacked on top of "HANDYMAN", appear word-by-word below the finished logo.

Technique: Live action footage and cel animation.

Audio: An orchestral rendition of Home Hardware's "Home of the handyman" jingle, with a chorus singing the jingle.

Availability: Only known to appear on one commercial from 1984.

2nd Logo (Late 80s-Early 90s)

Visuals: At the end of the commercial, a yellow-outlined red rounded-corner rectangle with two white houses and the words "Home hardware" (the first word is white), with "Home" stacked on top of "hardware", fade in at the bottom of the screen. The rectangle morphs into the current Home Hardware logo, a square with two lowercase "h"s, stylized to look like a house. "Home hardware" fades into "Home of the handyman" (in white), with "Home of the" stacked on top of "handyman" as the logo shines.

Technique: Cel animation.

Audio: A male chorus singing Home Hardware's "Home of the handyman" jingle.

Availability: Seen on the store's commercials from the time period.

3rd Logo (Late 2000s-Early 2010s)

Visuals: At the end of the commercial, a blonde-haired woman in a red shirt with the Home Hardware logo on it says "Only at Home Hardware and Building Center locations." as the Home Hardware logo from before, with "building center" in place of "hardware", forms next to her. The words "Search 60,000 items at homehardware.ca" is seen below the Home Hardware logo. Then, "building center" appears bellow the logo as "hardware" forms in its original spot. Finally, "building center" disappears. All of this is on a red background.

Technique: Live action and cel animation.

Audio: The woman's dialogue, accompanied by the last bit of Home Hardware's "Home Owners helping homeowners" jingle.

Availability: Seen on Home Hardware commercials from the period.

4th Logo (Mid 2010s-)

Visuals: On a red background, the current Home Hardware logo appears as the words "Here's How." appears next to it, with the "o" in "How" being a screw, which morphs into an actual "o" shortly after. Below, the words "Locally owned. Genuinely Canadian." can be seen, with a yellow maple leaf above the period at the end of "Canadian".

Variant: A Christmas version exists, with the letters in "Here's How." appearing as Christmas items, before morphing into the proper words (think the 2008 Sesame Workshop logo).

Technique: Cel animation.

Audio: A male voice-over saying "Home Hardware and Building Centers. Here's How.", trailing off from the voice-over's dialogue in the commercial, accompanied by a 6-note guitar/whistle ditty.

Audio Variants:

  • The Christmas variant features a chime/string version of the ditty, matching with the Christmas theme.
  • On some commercials, the background music is "Gonna Build A Mountain" by Anthony Newley, which is featured in the commercial.

Availability: The Christmas variant can be found around the Christmas season.
