Background

Jakks Pacific is a toy company founded in 1995 by Jack Friedman, the founder of prior toy companies LJN Ltd. and THQ, founding Jakks after THQ transitioned to become a video game company.

In 1998, the company entered into an agreement with THQ to acquire the video game licensing rights to the World Wrestling Federation, which were previously handled by Acclaim Entertainment. This joint venture, THQ/JAKKS Pacific LLC, handled all licensing rights to WWF/WWE video games until the end of 2009, following Jakks' WWE toy license expiring (with Mattel taking over) and THQ securing a standalone eight-year deal with the company following many lawsuits between all three parties.
