1st Logo (October 12, 1999-November 10, 2011)

Logo: In an office setting, we see a bottle filled with orange red ink in it labeled with the company name in an Impact font, also colored in a gold-white gradient at the middle. After one of the music variants as used in this logo are heard, a hammer (which, however, if you look at the bottle very closely, you can see a hammer swinging down, as seen in the white light reflection) swings down and breaks the bottle, causing the orange red ink in it to fly everywhere, covering up the whole screen.

Variants:

  • An open-matte version of the logo exists. This can be seen on the short-lived series The Strip and some 4:3 prints of Smallville.
  • A less cropped version of the logo exists. This can also be seen on 2003 DVD releases, Channel 4 and E4 British airings of the entire 1st season of Smallville. Also seen on ITV2 UK airings of the entire 1st season of the said show.

FX/SFX: Entirely live-action.

  • 2002-2011: A reverberating cartoon ditty.

Music/Sounds Variants:

  • On episodes "X-Ray" and "Hug" of the 1st season of Smallville, the logo is silent.
  • On some early episodes of the 2nd season of Smallville such as "Vortex", the reverberating cartoon ditty is somewhat slightly quieter before the bottle breaking sound appears.
  • Most original airings of Smallville use a television network's general theme and the announcer.
  • On the Smallville season 5 episode "Arrival", the bottle breaking sound is in sync with the last note of the music.

Availability: Common. First seen on the short series The Strip. Also later seen on Smallville and the 2011 Charlie's Angels revival. Also later seen 2006 TV pilot of Aquaman, which was initially released on iTunes and later included as a bonus feature on the Blu-ray release of Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths.
