Background

The Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation, commonly known as NTT, is a Japanese telecommunications company headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, founded in 1952 as a government-owned enterprise. The company during this period was called Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Public Corporation (日本電信電話公社, Nippon Denshin Denwa Kōsha, shortened into Den-Den Kōsha (電電公社)), before being privatized in 1985 and rebranded into the company known today. The company provides telephone, internet network and digital television services and also owns the national mobile carrier NTT DoCoMo.

1st Logo (1970s-1985)

Visuals: At the end of the commercial, a symbol consisting of 2 "T"s wrapping around each other into a ring shape, along with the text "電電公社" next to it, is seen usually in the corner of the screen. The color varies, but its usually either black, white, or either with a green symbol.

Technique: CGI and 2D animation.

Audio: The end of the commercial.

Availability: Seen on commercials from the time period.

2nd Logo (1985-1986)

Visuals: On a white background, a light blue ball, with visible shine spots, is seen just off-center to the left. It curves about in an arc, coils around once, and then curves into a large U shape, coiling back to its starting point while creating a path that fades slowly behind. As it coils back over its starting point, the entire path fades to a flat 2D pretzel-like shape (called a "dynamic loop"), which is NTT's logo. As it forms up, "未来を考える人間企業" ("A human company that thinks about the future.") appears above it, while the wordmark "NTT" in a bold serif font, appears below it.

Variants:

  • A short version exists where the logo starts just before the text appears.
  • Sometimes, the text is already there.
  • The logo might be in a rich blue color.

Technique: 2D animation.

Audio: A woman faintly whispers the name as a dreamy twinkling sound plays.

Availability: Seen on commercials from the time period.

3rd Logo (1986-1989)

Visuals:

  • 1986-1988: On a cornflower blue background, the NTT logo is seen as the same color as the background, with only a shadow to distinguish it. The shadow then retracts as the background fades to white and the logo turns into the familiar colors.
  • 1988-1989: On a cornflower blue background, shine marks in the shape of the NTT logo shine in as the logo appears in a metallic color. It then fades to a blue shade, and then to the same result as before.

Technique: Motion controlled animation.

Audio: A synthesized jingle, which differs with either variant.

Availability: Seen on commercials from the time period.
