Background

Novosti REN TV (also known as 24 in 2001-2010, and Novosti 24 in 2010-2015) is the news program of the named TV channel, airing since February 2nd, 1998.

On February 28th, 2000, the TV channel started to broadcast news produced by the TSN news agency (which previously aired on CT USSR Programme One in 1990-1991 and then TV-6 in 1997-1999; it was also owned by the Lukoil oil company and was one of the shareholders of REN-TV). The management of REN-TV and personally Irena Lesnevskaya (the founder of the channel) were not satisfied with the quality of information provided in the releases of the production of this TV company, and starting on June 13th, 2000, the channel began to produce its own newscasts again. This episode led to a rift in relations between Lukoil and REN-TV, and less than a year later, the oil company sold a stake in the TV channel to the Center for Optimization of Calculations, affiliated with RAO UES.

Novosti REN TV (1st era)

1st Intro (February 2-Mid 1998)

Visuals: The sequence starts with live-action footages of winter games, a person holding a trophy, and a shooting tank, sliding over each other to the center of the screen. The last footage moves and narrows down to the right side of the screen, and gains a light green glow, to make a room for a black-teal marble background with seven blurry light green rounded bars containing black texts of the names of the events on the left. Each one of them flashes at the random order as the narrowed screen fades to other news footage ("новости" - people dancing, with one of the men riding a horse; "политика" - what appears to be New York City with fireworks at night, "хроника" - the office with blinking light during the earthquake, "люди" - police cars flipping around the crowd, "экономика" - astronauts repairing the antenna, "власть" and then "события" - the appearance of the logo), while the bottom of it gains a green shade and a red cardiogram line draws in to the left. In the end, the narrowed screen cuts to a white background containing multiple copies of the word "НОВОСТИ" sliding to the left, with the dark blue REN-TV logo of the time appearing by zooming out through an invisible wide oval near the top of the screen. Then another wide oval appears over the logo, bulging out the background as the logo turns slightly translucent. The italicized version of the "НОВОСТИ" text appears below the logo in a linear blur effect, then the narrowed screen turns back to normal and takes up the whole screen area as the background stops moving.

Technique: 2D computer animation mixed with live-action footages.

Audio: A catchy synth-brass news fanfare composed by Semyon Son, who also composed the next intro.

2nd Intro (Mid 1998-September 5, 1999)

Visuals: Over a light blue background with a transparent footage of a daytime cloudy sky timelapse, the glassy version of the REN-TV logo of the time is seen at the middle of the screen. The logo zooms in and starts to rotate as a black diagonal line slides to the top-right, causing a group of multiple copies of the black text "НОВОСТИ" appear in the background, sliding upwards. As the transparent clock with gray bordering appears floating from the left, several sepia footages (e.g. people working with a TV mixer, a train and people running) are revealed contained with a large vertical box inside the logo near the right. Then a circular vertical line slides in from the left to reveal a blue helicopter, on which the white REN-TV is depicted, flying away to the right. As the clock flies away from the screen to the right, a transparent black globe with light sea green continents fades in, while rotating and zooming out. The globe then fades into a camera lens and the REN-TV logo finally flies away to the right. The camera lens captures while zooming in, before fading out as the tall, metallic text "НОВОСТИ" appears zooming out and settling itself at the center of the screen and then shines as the transparent light sea green map of the Earth is revealed in the background.

Technique: A mix CGI animation and live-action.

Audio: A repeating, descending synth sounder with warbling sounds that segues to a generic synth brass/organ/bell news fanfare, ending with REN-TV's trademark 3-note jingle of the time.

3rd Intro (September 6, 1999-February 27, 2000)

Visuals: The sequence starts with a moving dark turquoise aurora environment, where the transparent text "RENTV" with a light glow zooms in towards the screen, followed by the turquoise Europe texts "ОПЕРАТИВНО" and "СРОЧНО В ЭФИР" as the background gains the translucent footage of people working in the news studio, while a wide translucent turquoise vertical arc appears on the right. Then the same "RENTV" text appears zooming in the same way, followed by the words of categories of the program: "СОБЫТИЯ", "ИНФОРМАЦИЯ" and "КОММЕНТАРИИ". As the camera in the footage zooms into one of the TV screens, a vertical arc "bounces" off the screen and the reappears, and the text "НОВОСТИ" appears "bouncing" into the screen and settling itself near the center. The corners of the screen gain a translucent close-up shot of what appears to be a rotating diamond, and two wide outlined ovals, in the style of the REN-TV logo, are drawn behind "НОВОСТИ".

Technique: A mix 2D computer animation and live-action.

Audio: An excerpt of "Action News" by Universal Production Music.

4th Intro (June 13, 2000-October 7, 2001)

Visuals: The sequence starts with a TV displaying a static at the center in front of a blue-ish, out-of-focus footage of the TV static, with one light illuminating the TV. The camera tilts and zooms in to a TV in a stop-motion style by four frames as a group of three thin light blue rings (folded into one) proceeds to form at the center of the screen. Once the camera zoomed into the TV so that its screen would take up almost all the space, the screen flashes to a blue/maroon light background of a rotating spherical grid with multiple copies of the transparent texts "REN TV НОВОСТИ" sliding upwards near the right. A group of rings forms five copies of a rotating dark blue globe with cornflower blue continents folded into one, with each bigger one of them being brighter. Several groups of twenty transparent white circles slide in the background as several white-outlined bars appear moving near the bottom of the screen, and one of the groups of circles passes by near the bottom before a dark blue bar is formed in a linear blur effect near the bottom of the copies of a globe, and the white text "НОВОСТИ" appears on it letter-by-letter in the same effect while flipping from the left to the front. The outlined bars fade away, forming two blurry white bars as the scrolling dark blue text displaying names of Russian cities fades in at the bottom. Then four TVs fade in above the scrolling text at the random order; the first TV displaying a cloudy sky, then the third one displaying a rotating turquoise world map, animated via crossfading, the second one displaying REN-TV logo being animated in the same way, and the fourth one displaying an antenna. Groups of circles disappear in the background while a spherical grid remains rotating.

Technique: CGI animation mixed with live-action.

Audio: An ambient synth-brass theme ending with a majestic 3-note jingle (different from before); composed by Vladimir Davydenko, who also composed all the next intros until the 2011 Novosti 24 one.

Informacionnaya Programma 24

1st Intro (October 8, 2001-April 6, 2003)

Opening variant

Short variant

Closing variant

Visuals: The sequence starts with a black/dark/sky blue aurora enivronment with multiple flickering squares, moving vertical sky blue stripes and dots going around in multiple circles (a la Windows 8). The light blue map of Russia with separated subjects turns to the right to face the camera as several white "bursts" (a la fireworks) happen around them, pointing out the capitals of the subjects of Russia. Then the background wipes from the right to a teal/light blue grid environment on a black background, containing multiple sliding copies of a number "24" and a gear transmission, with the camera slowly moving around the envrionment. During that, a white bar wipes in from the left at the center, containing the same footage, albeit inverted with white. As the whole footage wipes from the left to a different angle of the same environment, with inverted part being formed by a vertical bar on the right, the map of Russia flies away to the top as a red reflective rounded rectangle appears slowly flying from the left, along with a white number "24" from the right, with each digit appearing from almost different directions. A white bar of the background slides to the left and settles still as the white Helios Condensed text "ИНФОРМАЦИОННАЯ ПРОГРАММА" zooms out below a rectangle with a number, with each letter facing slightly to the right, and a gray line fades in while extending to make a room for the text, while a rectangle with a number settle at the center, facing slightly to the top-left.

Closing Variant: Over several panning shots of a grid environment with inverted parts wiping in one-by-one, with a group of constanly changing translucent white numbers with flickering outlined squares at the bottom as well as the numbers that vertically aligned near the left (which later fade out near the end), the same rectangle with a number "24" zooms out from the bottom-left to the center and faces upwards. Behind it, a transparent black horizontal box wipes in to the bottom as four larger changing numbers pass by from the right to left. After a while, The light blue stacked text of the REN-TV URL, email address and copyright information appears in a linear blur effect line-by-line on a black box below the 24 logo.

Other Variant: In the short variant, the rectangle with a number zoom out and settle near the right side of the screen, with the "ИНФОРМАЦИОННАЯ ПРОГРАММА" text appearing in the same way as it did in the opening. The background wipes from the right to a different panning shot of a grid environment as a vertical inverted bar goes away to the left to make a room for another bar that forms near the left side of the screen.

Technique: CGI animation.

Audio: A different ambient synth-brass fanfare, this time ending with a harp glissando.

2nd Intro (April 7, 2003-March 14, 2004)

Early variant

Opening variant

Closing variant

Visuals: The sequence starts with a light blue wavy flag flying away to the left, revealing the close-up of a spinning translucent lighter blue globe with dark cyan continents, with an attached red ring. The ring rotates to the bottom and the camera zooms out to reveal the rest of the globe against a light sky blue wavy flag backdrop, which then flashes by an oval containing the same globe poping out like radio transmitter waves. The globe keeps zooming out as a tilted red, oval-shaped ring zooms out while rotating to the left, turning to the front to reveal that it contains an italic number "24" and encasing a globe, which became larger and more transparent, inside a ring. A tilted ring is shown against the same flag backdrop, but now with a transparent white bar in the middle of the screen and a transparent black line below it. Finally, the white text "ИНФОРМАЦИОННАЯ ПРОГРАММА" (which was originally smaller and was itallic until sometime in 2003), in the same font as before, rapidly zooms out and settles still inside a transparent black line.

Closing Variant: Over the same flag backdrop, the 24 logo forms in the same way as it did in the opening, but the globe at the beginning is absent; and instead of the white text appearing inside a black line, the teal text of REN-TV URL, email address and copyright information fades in below.

Technique: CGI animation.

Audio: A majestic truimphant orchestral drum fanfare, ending with a 6-note string sounder that leads to an orchestral hit.

Audio Variant: The closing variant starts with a string sounder that segues to the tail end of the theme with the same sounder.

3rd Intro (March 15, 2004-September 3, 2006)

Early variant

Opening variant

Closing variant

Visuals: The sequence starts with the camera zooming out through multiple circular, horizontal turquoise stripes sliding to the left on a black background with teal vignette. As half of the stripes starts to glow, the camera eventually settles still to reveal that the stripes are forming landmasses of a rotating, glowing light blue globe that also contains thiner horizontal lines besides them, with an orange lens flare (which was originally absent until autumn 2004) that shines through it on the left, while the background turns fully teal. Then the camera continues to zoom out to the right as the globe shoots out multiple stripes that fly to the right, while multiple large transparent rings appear moving from the right and passing through the stripes. As the globe seemingly disappears from far away by spending its stripes, with an orange lens flare fading out, a few of the stripes themselves start to glow as their transparent copies fade in over the screen. As the camera turns around them to the left, all of the stripes flash, causing a few of them to turn red, and the lens flare from afar returns. The same transparent rings then reappear and fly out forward as the lens flare goes off-screen, leaving its orange beam on the right, with the last ring forming a thin white horizontal line near the bottom of the screen and stripes that form landmasses of a globe, this time rotating clockwise, from the bottom view at the space above a thin line. During that, the stripes in the background turn transparent and thiner, while the camera turns to the front as a reflective maroon red bar, with a striped outline, wipes in below a thin line via a multiple horizontal stripes; the bar contains the white spaced-out Magistral text "информационная ПРОГРАММА" in a stacked format on the left, and a number "24" in the same font, slightly turned to the left, at the end on the right.

Closing Variant: Same as the opening, but instead of "информационная ПРОГРАММА", the text on the left of a bar says the TV channel URL and copyright information, which writes itself with a blinking white vertical bar.

Technique: CGI animation.

Audio: An arpeggating synth/harp sounder that builds up to a majestic truimphant orchestral theme, which accompanies a 4-note pizzicato sounder that repeats twice and leads to a proud 8-note truimphant fanfare.

4th Intro (5th Intro placeholder) (September 4-24, 2006)

Opening variant

Closing variant

Visuals: Almost same as the previous intro, but the main color scheme of it is dark orange; and as soon as the last ring formed a forming globe, which now occupies the entire screen area due to the absence of a thin line, the moving stripes fade out in the background as the then-new 24 logo fades in while zooming out at the center; the logo consists of a white arc facing bottom-left with an outlined, conjoined number "24", with parts of the outlines being absent to make a room for the ITC Avant Garde Gothic text above that says "информационная ПРОГРАММА" in a stacked format.

Closing Variant: Same as the opening, but in the end, the white text of URL and email address appears below the logo in the same way as the previous intro's closing variant.

Technique: CGI animation.

Audio: The music from the previous intro.

5th Intro (September 25, 2006-August 5, 2007)

Opening variant

Newscaster variant

Closing variant

Visuals: The sequence starts with a group of multiple small golden squares growing one-by-one while sliding to the left. As the black background fades into a dark orange/royal blue gradient, the squares zoom into the screen and fly out as they slowed down and started to form some sort of a spherical object, while an another group of small squares, albeit transparent white, fades in sliding in the background and turning to the left after facing right, as well as several copies of the transparent white texts "информационная ПРОГРАММА", in the same font as before, and two long texts of the names of Russian cities fading in. The golden squares slowly zoom out and form landmasses of a globe as multiple transparent rings appear forming, spinning and zooming out to the center. As the globe is formed and settled still while transparent rings keep zooming out, it turns orange-red and disappears piece-by-piece, with rings fading out, as the 24 logo from before forms via multiple zooming-out white squares, and the golden globe that only contains continents (in the normal form) flies in from the bottom-left to the top-right next to the logo. The squares in the background continue to move.

Closing Variant: Same as the opening, but with the same text of URL and email address from before appearing at the end.

Other Variant: There exists a variant where the text of a newscaster wipes in below the logo via multiple appearing squares; there are also a few transparent texts of news categories floating in the background near the beginning.

Technique: CGI animation.

Audio: An epic bass drum theme over a whistling synth sounder, with an ascending string sounder that builds up to a bombastic bass/string/bell fanfare.

6th Intro (August 6, 2007-May 3, 2009)

Regular variant

Newscaster variant

Visuals: On a black-brown gradient background with dark orange lighting, the right glowing arc of a rotating Earth globe wipes in as multiple glowing translucent orange squares appear around the environment and the camera turns around them. Then the right arc moves away to reveal the left arc of the same globe on the left which then moves back off-screen along with a dark orange lighting, leaving glowing squares which form the map of the Earth. As the map is finally formed, a group of multiple copies of the transparent white text "ИНФОРМАЦИОННАЯ ПРОГРАММА", as well as the names of news categories, fades in around the environment as another group of multiple orange squares appears zooming towards the screen and zooms backwards to form the then-new 24 logo, which then turns light gray; it looks similar to the previous one from the last two intros, but it contains the outlined bottom-left part of a rounded rectangle instead of an arc, and "ИНФОРМАЦИОННАЯ ПРОГРАММА", set in the Franklin Gothic Heavy typeface, is at the bottom of "24". During the formation of the logo, the transparent texts around the environment fade out.

Variant: Similar to the previous intro, a newscaster variant exists: When the logo is formed, the Franklin Gothic Medium text (with a drop shadow) of a newscaster fades in letter-by-letter below it in uppercase letters, with the first letter of both first and last names being bigger than the rest of the letters.

Technique: CGI animation by Shandesign, which also did the next intro below, as well as the one for Novosti 24 in 2011.

Audio: The music from the previous intro. The newscaster variant has the ending accompanying a high-pitched piano sounder.

7th Intro (May 4, 2009-February 7, 2010)

Visuals: The sequence starts with a close-up of an orange-red globe with clouds at a tilted angle on the right over a black background. Suddenly, a white flash occurs behind a globe as it starts to rotate, and several white texts of the names of Russian cities, in lowercase letters, appear from behind a globe and circle around it as the camera moves and turns to the left, while a wireframe forms around a globe. As the background fades into a dark orange environment with multiple transparent rings above and below a globe and a transparent cylindrical world map made of dots, the clouds of a globe fade out, and multiple white squares appear from behind a globe on the left and also circle around it. As the camera zooms out and turns to the front, the square eventually form the landmasses on the globe as the wireframe of a globe fades out, and the texts fly away to the left. Then the globe turns darker, and a transparent metallic version of the 24 logo from before fades in at the center as multiple horizontal non-transparent parts of it fly out from left and right to the center and form together; first the number "24" with a part of a rectangle, and then the "ИНФОРМАЦИОННАЯ ПРОГРАММА" text. The camera also tilts at a different angle during the formation of the logo.

Closing Variant: Same as the opening, but with the white text of URL and email address appearing letter-by-letter below the logo at the end.

Other Variant: A newscaster variant has the white text of a newscaster (with other letters being lowercase this time) fading in from the left below the logo, with spacing between each letter decreasing.

Technique: CGI animation.

Audio: The music from the last two intros, but with the first half accompanying an electric guitar sounder.

Novosti 24

1st Intro (February 8, 2010-August 14, 2011)

Opening variant

Newscaster variant

Closing variant

Visuals: The sequence starts with a gray vignette background with a crudely drawn black spiral, orange hour, second and minute hands that are attached to an orange circle near the bottom-right corner next to an orange beam, and the slowly scrolling text of copies of "НОВОСТИ 24" on the left. The camera rapidly pans down to reveal a glowing tunnel with multiple texts of events and news categories flying upwards at a fast pace, surrounded by black/orange spirals. The screen then cuts to a bottom view of the same tunnel with spirals in a dark orange environment, with the former going through a globe that only contains orange landmasses. Then it cuts to a zooming-out shot of the same globe being surrounded by multiple rings of the copies of the orange text "НОВОСТИ 24", with a glowing tunnel passing through it. Then the screen cuts to a close-up of the same glowing tunnel, with the camera zooming out to dark gray spirals below the tunnel; and the screen fades to a shot facing upward to the globe with an orange lens flare at the middle, with the camera zooming out through multiple texts in a dark spiral. The camera eventually passes through the same circle (which is now aligned to the middle right), with hour, minute and second hands against moving black/white spirals with spinning copies of the black text of the program title and an orange beam at the bottom-right, and settles still; though the difference with a circle is that it contains a cutout of the Magistral ExtraBold Italic text "НОВОСТИ 24", arranged like this:

--НОВОСТИ

24

Trivia:

  • The very first shot was based on the REN-TV clock ident of the time. The clock ID can bee viewed here.
  • If one looks closely at the 10 second mark, a typo error can be found: One of the words of the flying texts - "ПРОИСШЕСТВИЯ" is misspelled as "ПРОИШЕСТВИЯ".

Closing Variant: It starts off with a zooming shot of the globe, which then transitions to the last shot with the Novosti 24 logo, and the white text of URL and email address appears below letter-by-letter.

Other Variant: A newscaster variant has the white Magistral Bold Italic of a newscaster appearing letter-by-letter to the last 5 notes of the theme at the bottom in the last shot, while slowly sliding to the right.

Technique: CGI animation by 1+1 Video Design.

Audio: A majestic and energetic new-age electric guitar/pop fanfare.

2nd Intro (August 15, 2011-March 7, 2014)

Opening variant

Variant with different footages

Winter-themed variant

Newscaster variant

Closing variant

Visuals: The sequence starts with a dark orange environment with a brown map of the Earth, multiple glassy orange vertical bars and transparent white horizontal lines/dots around the environment. The camera zooms towards the bars as they start to move, and the screen backs out as the camera turned around to reveal that the environment with bars is contained within the left lateral face of an orange glassy cube in an another orange digital environment, which has a large cutout of letters of the REN logo; inside this cube are also two footages of the events. Then another two footages move and settle themselves besides the cube, and the camera moves to the right and turns around the environment, revealing various cube of footages (all of which have changed over the years), several dark glossy bars that contain the orange neon sign-like glowing, wide glassy texts "НОВОСТИ" and a number "24", with the former being set in a bold sans-serif font, and the latter in a futuristic font. In the end, the camera zooms out as multiple glassy bars from before appear, filling the screen as the program title in the same neon style, but with "НОВОСТИ" being metallic, zooms out with its letters randomly rotating to the front. As a black horizontal bar with shiny bordering zooms in against the text to make a room for it, the glassy bars transition the background to a deeper shady orange digital envrionment with a transparent black world map and the reflection of the logo below.

Closing Variant: It starts off with a cube with a cutout of REN letters, and when the camera turns around the environment, the screen transitions to the ending part with the program title. Then the translucent black text of URL and copyright information fades in at the bottom in a stacked format.

Other Variants:

  • In the newscaster variant, a blurry black bar fades in below the Novosti 24 logo when it's formed, and the white DIN Pro Condensed text of a newscaster wipes in via multiple vertical bars, aligned to the right side of a bar.
  • The winter-themed variant has a snowfall throughout the whole intro.

Technique: CGI animation with live-action footages.

Audio: A dramatic orchestral drum theme accompanying techno-beeping notes, with a 5-note bell sounder being heard at the end. Composed by Victor Dormidontov, who also composed all the next intros below.

Audio Variant: The closing variant has the first seconds of the theme seguing to the end with a bell sounder.

3rd Intro (March 12, 2014-February 14, 2015)

Prototype variant

Regular variant

Newscaster variant

Visuals: In a white cloudy environment, the camera zooms towards a glowing globe orange mirror glass landmasses containing multiple layers and a black icospheric wireframe. A burst of multiple transparent white beaming circles, as well as thin white rings with red dots and a growing globe that only contains gray landmasses with white texts of country names, occurs around a glowing globe as a group of multiple glassy black/orange circular bars/lines, some of which are also detailed, with multiple glowing dots forms around the middle of it. The camera eventually zooms in passing the continents to reveal a digitalized black cylinder with an orange-red center that contains a glowing beige number "24" in the Helios typeface, surrounded by multiple glowing linear/circular stripes with a world map, large decreasing, metallic circular bars on the left and multiple moving, glowing yellow 3D circular sound waves on the right. The screen then cuts to a panning close-up of the same cylinder with a number from the top view, which then cuts to the same globe with a group of circular bars, albeit with a larger, segmented metallic ring, near the right side of the screen. In the place of a globe, the translucent shady red circle zooms in, containing a flat-shaded white version of "24", while a transparent maroon beaming circle pops out from the former like a radio transmitter wave as the maroon text "НОВОСТИ" slides from behind a circle to the left and shines. The words of the small, stacked text "информационная программа" fade in while sliding in one column, right-aligned below the former text.

Variants:

  • There exists a protoype variant, where the glowing globe is darker and the whole intro is set in widescreen.
  • A newscaster variant has the black text of a newscaster appearing below "НОВОСТИ" instead of "информационная программа", this time in one line.

Technique: CGI animation by N3 Design.

Audio: A slightly shortened, re-orchestrated version of the previous intro's theme, with a bell sounder (which is accompanied by a sweeping whoosh) at the end being shortened to 3 notes.

Audio Variant: In the prototype version, the first half of the theme is extended, a sweeping whoosh is absent and a bell sounder sounds quieter.

Novosti REN TV (2nd era)

Intro (February 16, 2015-)

Visuals: In a dark blue-cyan spotlight envrionment, there is a white glassy Affect text "НОВОСТИ" with a long transparent sky blue bevel near the upper-right side of the screen, and a holographic blue Earth globe from afar near the bottom-right side of the screen. As the camera slowly pans towards both of them, multiple translucent white thin, geometric lines with dots form around the environment as multiple small texts of the events appear decrypting, while a blue glassy thick ribbon forms and goes around the environment, a wireframe globe containing glassy circular stripes bursts around the holographic globe and an arc of two glassy circular bars forms at the top-right next to the latter globe. The camera then flies out to the right to reveal the same globes with forming lines and texts and a ribbon from before, but everything is located in other places; the holographic globe is located near the top, and the program title is near the bottom. Then all the same thing happens two more times; each time when the camera arrived in to the same objects in different places, the holographic globe is placed closer and closer. In the end, the camera pans forward passing a globe to a place where there is nothing, and the same ribbon flies in from the bottom to form a translucent light blue version of the "Р" of the current REN-TV logo on the left, while the same "НОВОСТИ" text zooms out and settles near the center next to a ribbon, becoming flat-shaded as its bevel fades away. During the formation of the logo, two arcs of circular bars form around the "Р", and the white letters of the REN-TV logo appear glowing at the front of an "Р", causing a holographic globe to pop out against the REN-TV logo and circular stripes, seperated from a wireframe globe since it appeared in the final shot before all the other globes, to burst out and fading away.

Variant: In the morning broadcasts, the holographic globe zooms in with two spinning arcs of bars, and the same circular stripes burst and fade out. Then the logo forms in the same way as two arcs disappear and reappear, and a lens flare appears moving from the right in front of "НОВОСТИ" to a ribbon to light up the letters of the logo, while the same circular stripes reappear.

Technique: CGI animation.

Audio: A shorter version of the previous intro's theme, accompanying a majestic horn/techno sounder.
