Background

Oscilloscope Laboratories is an independent film distribution company founded by Beastie Boys member Adam Yauch and former THINKfilm executive David Fenkel. It also has a recording studio and film production facilities. The first film made by Oscilloscope was The Beastie’s concert film Awesome; I F**kin' Shot That! Fenkel returned to the company on May 4, 2012 following Yauch's death. As of August 2012, Fenkel is no longer with the company to found A24, which is now headed by David Laub and Dan Berger.

Logo (March 31, 2006-)

Visuals: As the screen fades to a black/midnight blue/fern nebula in a starfield, a rusty circular oscilloscope fades in and slowly backs out, while a green line moves inside. When the droning synth increases in frequency cutoff, the rusted words "OSCILL" and "SCOPE" blur in and zoom out, with the oscilloscope serving as the letter O in "OSCILLOSCOPE". After that, the word "LABORATORIES" fades in below.

Trivia: The logo is based on the 1950s Toho Scope logo.

Variants:

  • There is a Christmas variant where the oscilloscope wears a Santa Claus hat. This can be seen on American prints of Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale.
  • There is also a variant without the "LABORATORIES" text.

Technique: CGI.

Audio: A wobbling synth bass.

Availability: Appears on films from the company, such as We Need to Talk About Kevin and Buzzard.
