Background

Protozoa Pictures is the production company of filmmaker Darren Aronofsky, founded in 1997. The company is best known for films such as Requiem for a Dream, Black Swan, and Mother!. The company is named after a short film Aronofsky made in 1993, and also reflects his interest in exploring the fundamental aspects of human existence, often delving into themes of obsession, transformation, and the struggle for identity. The company prioritizes creative freedom and collaboration, fostering relationships with a diverse range of artists and filmmakers who share a similar passion for pushing the boundaries of cinema. The company didn't use a logo until 2016.

1st Logo (December 2, 2016-)

Visuals: In a blurry white setting under a microscope, there is a zoomed in cell which suddenly turns into a letter "O", the scene then cuts to a letter "R" with an elongated tail and a letter "P" splitting from it, which then rapidly cuts to the letters "O" "Z" "O" and "T", which then cuts to the finished product: which is the word "Protozoa" in grey with the "A" splitting off from the third "O" before the screen abruptly cuts to black. This all happens at a very fast pace.

Variant: Starting with The Whale, the logo is much cleaner looking.

Technique: CGI.

Audio: A droning synth note along with clicking sounds for the microscope.

Availability: First seen on Jackie and can be subsequently seen on films such as Mother!, The Whale, and The Good Nurse.

2nd Logo (March 26, 2018-)

Visuals: Over a black background, there is the word "PROTOZOA" with the third "O" placed as a cell with black dots on it and lines as rays, This serves as a print logo for posters and trailers.

Technique: A still digital graphic.

Audio: The opening theme of the trailer.

Availability: Seen on the National Geographic series One Strange Rock and also appears on the trailer for the 25th anniversary rerelease of Pi as well as Postcard From Earth.
