Shaw Cable

From the Audiovisual Identity Database, the motion graphics museum

Background

Shaw Communications was founded in 1966. They didn't use an on-screen logo until 1993. In 2021, it was announced that Rogers Communications would buy Shaw. However, the acquisition was completed by 2023 as they had to divest Freedom Mobile to Quebecor the year prior and immediately after the acquisition, all of Shaw's systems were amalgamated into Rogers.

1st Logo (1993-1997)

Visuals: On a dark cloudy background, a metallic purple map of Canada (with the Great Lakes at the bottom, so a clear line of where Michigan is can be seen as well), rotates and zooms towards the screen. As this happens, a white line flies around and onto the other side, in which the Shaw Cable logo (the Shaw logo at the time with "cable" in a rounded font), both in metallic blue, is seen turning to position, but the Shaw logo doesn't have the line or leaf. The line then places itself into position as a maple leaf grows in the hole of the "A". The leaf flashes, turning the line red.

Variants: A still version was seen on local programs.

Technique: CGI. None for the still version.

Audio: A warbly synth tune with a ding. None for the still version.

Availability: The animated variant was seen mostly as a bumper.

2nd Logo (May 11, 1996-January 24, 1998)

Visuals: On a white floor in the dark with a spotlight, there is a modified rounded square-shaped TV in a strange shade of either green or yellow, with 2 orange buttons and a blue knob. There is the Polar Bear mascot of Shaw sticking out of it, waving his hand at the viewer, also looking at the viewer. The Shaw logo from around the time is seen above the TV, but at first, without the red line. A spark comes in and forms the red line of the logo, and then disappears.

Variant: There is a long version in which, there's a big flash that forms the logo. Then, the animation continues as normal.

Technique: CGI.

Audio: None or the ending theme of the show.

Availability: It was seen on Shout! Factory's prints (maybe also other prints) of season three of ReBoot. Also seen on the Canadian VHS of the Goosebumps episode The Haunted Mask II.

Final Note

Shaw would never use a logo again until the 2010 formation of the Shaw Media division.
