Background

Pierrot Co., Ltd. (株式会社ぴえろ), previously known as Studio Pierrot Co., Ltd. (株式会社スタジオぴえろ or Studioぴえろ) until 2004 is a Japanese animation studio established in May 1979 by former Tatsunoko Production animator and director Yuji Nunokawa. Its headquarters are located in Mitaka, Tokyo. In 2004, the studio rebranded to its current name and began using the Studio Pierrot name for its animation studio facilities. In 2024, the second Studio Pierrot was rebranded to Pierrot Films. In 2008, Pierrot purchased Studio Kikan and renamed it to Studio Pierrot+ until 2017, when it was renamed to Studio Signpost.

Some of Pierrot's most popular works include Urusei Yatsura, Creamy Mami, Yu Yu Hakusho, Fushigi Yugi, Naruto, Bleach, Tokyo Ghoul among others.

The studio was named after the famous French clown Pierrot. Nunokawa chose the name in honor of a circus troupe he saw as a child.
