The static logo's start date

I've recently become really curious about when this logo first debuted. For the longest time CLG stated it debuted in 1993, and a lot of news articles and videos say the same, but recently it was edited back to 1996. From my research, it seems to be that it DID debut in 1996 (which is also when HBO first used their "It's not TV, it's HBO" slogan), but that just makes me wonder where the 1993 date comes from and if that remains true or not.
