3rd Bumper (1986-1995)

Visuals: The 1986 Walt Disney Home Video logo is seen animating as normal, but as the logo is almost completed, it shifts down slightly as one of the below bumpers fades in above the logo before it shines:

  • ALSO AVAILABLE FROM
  • COMING SOON FROM

Variants:

  • On some tapes, the bumper animates normally, but with a different voiceover. Otherwise, no voiceover is heard (see “Audio” and “Audio Variants” for more info).
  • At the end of 1994 UK and Irish retail VHS tapes is the already formed logo with the text above reading "LOOK OUT FOR FUTURE RELEASES FROM."
  • A shorter variant exists, which skips Mickey and starts with the spark writing the Walt Disney signature.
  • On early tapes such as the 1986 UK and Irish VHS rental releases of Pinocchio (1940), the words "COMING SOON FROM" in one line appears in red.
  • Some early tapes such as the 1987 UK and Irish VHS releases of Benji the Hunted have the text in a different font.
  • On the 1988 UK and Irish VHS rental releases of Sleeping Beauty, "NOW AVAILABLE FROM", in a sans-serif font, fades in above the logo.
  • On some 1992 UK and Irish retail VHS tapes, like Cinderella (1950) and Basil the Great Mouse Detective (known as The Great Mouse Detective in America), the Coming Soon variant takes place on a blue background for the Sing-Along Songs trailer.
  • Starting in 1994, the Walt Disney Home Video logo (excluding Sorcerer Mickey) and the following text (which is slightly smaller) is tinted in red.
  • Depending on the color scheme, the WDHV logo and the text may appear in magenta or red.

Technique: Same as the 1986 Walt Disney Home Video logo.

Audio: Same as the 1986 Walt Disney Home Video logo jingle, but the music is often high pitched, due to it being converted in the PAL format. Sometimes the music is shortened.

Audio Variants:

  • On the short variant and sometimes the full variant, there is no voiceover. This variant is also used as a de-facto home video logo.
  • On some UK and Irish retail VHS tapes throughout 1993, a male announcer says the following: "A world of magic, which can be yours to treasure for a lifetime, from Walt Disney Home Video."
  • On the 1987 British and Irish retail VHS releases of Alice in Wonderland (1951), Dumbo (1941), Mary Poppins, Popeye (1980), Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo, Soccer Mania, Winnie the Pooh and the Blustery Day, Chip ‘n Dale Go Nuts, and Mickey’s Christmas Carol, only Brian Cummings is heard saying, “This season, you and your family can own the magic of Disney on videocassette, only from Walt Disney Home Video.” At the end of the advertisement, he states, “Don’t miss this opportunity to begin your own Disney library for only $12.99, and bring Disney home for good.”
  • On the 1988 British and Irish retail VHS releases of Pinocchio (1940), The Sword in the Stone, Return to Oz, Mary Poppins, Pete’s Dragon (1977), Bedknobs and Broomsticks, Winnie the Pooh: The Great Honey Pot Robbery, Alice in Wonderland (1951), Dumbo (1941), Disney’s Sing Along Songs: Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah, Disney’s Sing Along Songs: Very Merry Christmas Songs, Mickey’s Magical World, and Mickey’s Christmas Carol, Brian Cummings says, “Now you can own the magic of Disney on video. A classic library can be yours to share forever.” At the end of the advertisement, he states, “Share the magic with your family for only £7.99. Bring Disney home for keeps.”
  • On the 1989 British and Irish retail VHS releases of Sleeping Beauty, both the logo and music play in full and, as soon as the WDHV logo begins to settle in, Brian Cummings says, “Now, you and your family can own the magic of Disney on video.” A similar version is shown on the same tape following an advertisement of other titles available on home video, which begins with a preview for Robin Hood (1973), except Brian Cummings says, “Don‘t miss this opportunity to collect the very best of Disney. Available wherever videocassettes are sold.” throughout the short variant of the logo.
    • This version also appears on the 1989 British and Irish retail VHS releases of Robin Hood (1973), The Sword in the Stone, Dumbo (1941), Alice in Wonderland (1951), Disney’s Sing Along Songs: Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah, Disney’s Sing Along Songs: Very Merry Christmas Songs, Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers: Crimebusters, Bedknobs and Broomsticks, Tron, Popeye (1980), Winnie the Pooh: The Great Honey Pot Robbery, Mickey and the Gang, Unsinkable Donald Duck, Pluto’s Tales, and Mickey’s Christmas Carol, except Cummings’ voiceover begins as soon as the WDHV logo finishes shining, leading to it ending at the beginning of a preview for Sleeping Beauty.
  • On the 1991 British and Irish retail VHS releases of The Little Mermaid, Brian Cummings announces, “From Walt Disney Home Video, a world of magic that can be yours to treasure for a lifetime.”
  • At the end of 1994-95 UK and Irish retail VHS tapes, John Sachs (better known as the announcer from Gladiators) concludes, "Look out for future releases from Walt Disney Home Video."
  • Starting in 1994, the opening variant is accompanied with a voiceover by Sachs (e.g. "Also available from Walt Disney Home Video", or "Coming soon from Walt Disney Home Video").

Availability: Seen mostly on British and Irish Disney VHS tapes available for sale and rental from the time. The two variants, though, were seen on some UK and Irish Disney VHS tapes from the same era. This also appears on non-Disney tapes such as the rental VHS release of Sister Act.

4th Bumper (1986-1987) (Disney Premiere Cinema)

Visuals: On a pink-white-blue gradient background is the text "COMING SOON FROM" in a serif font. It flips over to reveal the Disney Premiere Cinema logo.

Technique: A simple flipping effect.

Audio: A short version of the Disney Premiere Cinema logo theme.

Availability: Seen on the UK and Irish rental VHS releases of Pinocchio (1940) and Sunday Drive, which, at the time, were distributed by Rank Video; therefore, it's possible it appears on other Rank-distributed Disney tapes of the time as well.

5th Bumper (October 12, 1989) (Walt Disney Home Video)

8th Bumper (1991)

Visuals: On a black background, the gold and shiny words "STAY TUNED" are seen in a Rockwell font.

Trivia: Interestingly, not only does this have an American-accented announcer, but it happens to be Brian Cummings, whose voiceover here (mentioned below) was shortened for use in a couple of American IDs. Cummings would also perform the voiceover for another stay tuned bumper on the 1994 South Korean VHS release of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

Technique: Shining effects.

Audio: None, except Brian Cummings saying "Stay tuned after our feature, for a look at other great titles available from Walt Disney Home Video." After that, there's three seconds of silence before the bumper fades out.

Availability: As of now, it can be seen only on the 1991 UK VHS release of Ducktales The Movie: Treasure of the Lost Lamp.

Legacy: As previously mentioned, this stay tuned bumper is noteworthy for containing an American-accented announcer on a British VHS release of a Disney movie. This led to various YouTube accounts creating their own 1991 VHS openings of Disney films that would include this stay tuned bumper and then WDSHE’s 1989-92 Feature Presentation bumper.

9th Bumper (1991)

Visuals: There is a light-dark blue gradient background with one of the following captions "COMING SOON FOR YOU TO OWN" or "NOW AVAILABLE FOR YOU TO OWN" flying in from the top right, and settle in the middle for a few seconds. It then flips up, and rotates clockwise to exit the screen.

Technique: 2D effects.

Audio: None.

10th Bumper (1991-1992)

Visuals: On a blue background, there is a note displayed on the screen, which says "STAY TUNED FOR MORE NEWS OF DISNEY'S VIDEO RELEASES AFTER THE MAIN FEATURE".

  • COMING SOON
  • SOON AVAILABLE TO OWN ON VIDEO
  • NOW AVAILABLE
  • AVAILABLE TO BUY
  • FEATURE PRESENTATION (recycled from the 10th American bumper)

Variants:

  • The color scheme varies for each bumper.
  • The "COMING SOON" bumper is still.
  • The "AVAILABLE TO BUY" and "FEATURE PRESENTATION" bumpers animate like the U.S./Canadian counterpart of the era.
  • The "NOW AVAILABLE" and "SOON AVAILABLE TO OWN ON VIDEO" bumpers animate in a similar fashion, except the texts slightly zoom in during the animation. The former bumper is shown in letterboxed format, while the latter bumper is shown on open matte.
  • On the 1997 retail UK VHS releases of The English Patient, the "NOW AVAILABLE" bumper is bold, tinted in white, and a still image. In addition, the text is arranged horizontally and most of the outlining is gone.

Technique: 2D animation.

Audio:

  • The "Coming Soon" and "Feature Presentation" bumpers, as well as the 1997 edition of the "Now Available" bumper, contain a majestic horn & string-driven fanfare - possibly an alternate take of the 1991 WDHV logo theme. To make room for the music, these bumpers stay on screen for three additional seconds. This music was first heard on the 1993 rental UK VHS releases of Aspen Extreme.
  • Both the "Soon Available to Own on Video" bumper and the 1998 edition of the "Now Available" bumper contain the 1991 WDHV logo jingle.

Audio Variants:

  • On the 2003 UK VHS releases of Inspector Gadget (1999), the slower version of the logo music is used on the "Feature Presentation" bumper.
  • On the 1993 UK rental VHS releases of The Distinguished Gentleman (the first tape to use the "Feature Presentation" bumper), a completely different majestic fanfare reminiscent of the second half of the Hollywood Pictures logo jingle is used on the "Feature Presentation" bumper.
  • On the 1993-94 UK rental VHS releases of 3 Ninjas and Born Yesterday and the 2003 UK retail VHS releases of The Magical World of Winnie the Pooh, the 1991 WDHV jingle is heard on both the "Coming Soon" and "Feature Presentation" bumpers.
  • On the 2000 UK retail VHS releases of Spot's Show and Other Musical Adventures, the music from the Italian 1991 bumpers is heard on the "Feature Presentation" bumper.
  • On the 1996-98 UK rental VHS releases of Things to Do in Denver When You're Dead, Con Air, The Preacher's Wife, and The Wings of the Dove, the Jim Henson Video logo jingle is heard on the "Available to Buy" bumper.
  • On the 1998 UK rental VHS releases of The 6th Man, the 1991 WDHV logo jingle is heard on the "Available to Buy" bumper.

Availability: Seen on the rental and retail editions of many Buena Vista and Disney VHS releases from Great Britain.

  • These bumpers were first used on the rental editions of VHS releases such as Aspen Extreme, 3 Ninjas, Born Yesterday, Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey, A Far Off Place, The Mighty Ducks are the Champions (known as The Mighty Ducks in America), Hocus Pocus, The Three Musketeers (1993), My Father the Hero, The Adventures of Huck Finn, Cool Runnings, Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit, Lightning Jack, Little Buddha, Pulp Fiction, Iron Will, and In the Army Now.
  • Although the "Feature Presentation" bumper was introduced on the 1993 UK rental VHS releases of The Distinguished Gentleman, the remaining bumpers didn't debut until later that year, with the UK rental VHS releases of Aspen Extreme.
  • The first Disney-branded retail releases to contain the "Feature Presentation" bumper were Around the World with Timon and Pumbaa and Dining Out with Timon and Pumbaa from 1997, followed by Toy Story: Collector’s Edition from 1999. This bumper appeared on subsequent Disney retail VHS tapes from the UK such as Toy Story 2, Tarzan (1999), The Legend of Tarzan and Power Rangers: Wild Force videotapes, Dinosaur (2000), Monsters, Inc., Finding Nemo, Atlantis: The Lost Empire, Treasure Planet, Freaky Friday (2003), Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, and Kim Possible: The Secret Files; most of these releases also included the "Coming Soon" and "Now Available" bumpers.
