Background

Wanadoo Edition was the gaming division of Wanadoo, formed in 2000 from the merger of Index+ and France Telecom Multimedia and named after their Internet brand name at the time. It was bought by Microids in 2003, and France Telecom, in return, became a 12% share holder. The Wanadoo name would be retired for the Orange brand in 2006, though.

1st Logo (November 9, 2000-2002)

Visuals: On a black background, the Wanadoo logo at the time can be seen, which is the text "wanadoo" and a byline reading "France Telecom Group" in either English or French, depending on the game language. Both are either in dark blue or white. To the left of it is an ampersand made of red and orange swooshes, the official logo of France Telecom and its brands at the time.

Variants:

  • An animated variant was used on some games. It consists of the logo blurring in and zooming out on a white background, complete with a trail and brief shadow effect.
  • Sometimes, the logo would have France Telecom's wordmark instead, which has "com" in orange. This can be seen on The Messenger (2000).
  • Later on, a byline reading "édition" would be added, but there would be usually no byline most of the time.
  • Some games for GBA had a red background and white logo.

Technique: A still, digital graphic. 2D computer animation for the animated variant.

Audio: None. The animated variant had a techno beat overlaid with wind swishing, mechanical sounds, and a woman saying "wanadoo" twice in different pitches.

Availability: It can be seen in a variety of games like The Messenger (2000), Necronomicon, Aztec for PSX, and other titles. It doesn't appear on all games, though.

2nd Logo (2002-2003)

Visuals: On a white background, the new Wanadoo symbol (a rounded black rectangle with a pointed top left corner and a "w" inside of it, in a futuristic font) fades and zooms out, then quickly flashes through the other letters of "wanadoo" before quickly snapping back a bit and stretching to the left with an after image. Then, the "w" fades back in and the text becomes formed up in the following sequence:

  • The "w" appears in the square, slides to the left and leaves a black copy of it before flipping over and forming a "n" from its right side.
  • Two copies of the "a" come in and merge together, before briefly blinking and then shooting out one of them to create both "a"s.
  • Two red lines come in and cause a "d" to appear before the lines move back out of existence.
  • A "o" comes rushing towards the right before leaving a black "o" and then disappearing, in which another black "o" forms it.

All of these form the text "wanadoo" in black, and finally, the "w" forms three red copies to go up, left, and down, and the left one eventually settles inside of the square, forming the final logo.

Variants:

  • A still version of the logo exists, either in fill color or pure white.
  • On Raging Blades, the word "presents" appears below in red, then grey.

Technique: 2D computer animation.

Audio: A soft series of beeps and whirs with a underlying "chiptune"-styled tune that stops when the logo fully forms up. None for the still version.

Availability: Seen on Pro Beach Soccer for Xbox and also appeared on Iron Storm and Curse: The Eye of Isis. It was briefly used alongside the 1st logo as well for its first few months of existence.
