Background

Johnny Mak is a Hong Kong film distributor.

1st Logo (1984-1989)

Logo: On a white background, we see a director's chair appearing. The Chinese company name in yellow appears below letter-by-letter, followed by the English name wiping in from left to right.

Variant: A still version exists.

Technique: The chair and text appearing.

Music/Sounds: A low-pitched crash, which segues into a bombastic, happy sounding synth fanfare with whooshes and an explosive finale. The fanfare is heard on the other texts too. This sounds a lot like the fourth logo for Rank Screen Advertising.

Availability: Rare.

2nd Logo (1987-1989)

Logo: Just an in-credit text of Johnny Mak Productions logo along with the print logo of Golden Harvest, Win's Entertainment or Movie Impact present.

Technique: None

Music/Sounds: None or the opening theme of movie. On a rare occasion, it uses the second half of the music for the next logo.

Availability: Super rare. Preceded by the 1st logo or 3rd logo.

3rd Logo (1983-1984, 1990-1997)

Logo: On a black background, a light is activated and a red director's chair is seen rising and spinning from the floor. We zoom into the chair, and after the spinning stops, the word "JM" appears, and then the company name.

Variants: On films such as Possessed, Everlasting Love, Sex and Zen and The Island of Greed, the logo is animated in CGI. Here, the light is more realistic and in a blue tint. The zooming is also slower and the chair is CGI rather than cel-animated.

  • On To Be Number One, the logo fades out before the fanfare is about to finish, followed by yellow Chinese text seguing into the opening of the film.

Technique: 2D animation for the original version, or CGI for the variant.

Music/Sounds: The logo starts with a synth hum that sustains itself for the rest of the logo. This note is accompanied by a repetition of shining noises, a dramatically rising horn fanfare, the sound of metal clanking, and 3 loud brass notes, followed by a triumphant sounding fanfare with loud drum beats.

Music/Sounds Variant: Sometimes, the theme is low-pitched.

Availability: Rare. Seen on films from the company such as Lord of East China Sea. The enhanced version can be seen on the aforementioned movies above.
