Background

RCA/Columbia Pictures/Hoyts Video Pty. Ltd. was formed sometime around 1983, as a joint venture between Hoyts Distribution and RCA/Columbia (as the name implies) to distribute movies in Australia and New Zealand.

1st Logo (1983-1988)

Visuals: On a black-teal gradient background, the standard RCA/Columbia Pictures International Video logo is seen, but the 2nd hole and the Columbia Pictures logo are shrunken to make room for a 3rd alcove, the size of the top one, to make room for a red Hoyts logo. "INTERNATIONAL VIDEO" is also replaced with "VIDEO PTY. LTD."

Variant: A variant used in TV ads from around the time has the text "Just wait till you see the New Video Releases from..." which then fades into the logo box. The background is a dark-to-light blue gradient with a pattern of RCA, Hoyts and Columbia logos, and the logo is modified to better resemble the standard RCA/Columbia Pictures Home Video logo, along with a larger "VIDEO PTY. LTD." and no white border. Another variation had the text scrolling up the screen, with the logo box then zooming down from the top.

Technique: A digital graphic.

Audio: None.

Availability: On Australian PAL tapes of releases from Columbia, TriStar, Cannon, etc between 1983 & 1988. Tapes that have this logo include the 1987 VHS of About Last Night..., the 1985 VHS of Ghostbusters, and a 1984 VHS of Educating Rita.

2nd Logo (1988-1992)

Visuals: Same as the 2nd RCA/Columbia Pictures International Video logo, but the logo is modified to use the previous logo's design.

Variants:

  • When previews of movies are shown, after this logo plays, it fades to the silver 3D text "COMING ATTRACTIONS", which shines. Sometimes, chyroned in text is seen in white, reading "STAY TUNED FOR MORE" (Coming Attractions text) "AFTER THIS FEATURE".
  • A still version has been spotted.

Technique: CGI done by Ed Kramer at DESIGNefx in Atlanta, GA on an SGI 4D/70 computer running Wavefront software, and animated at 30p.

Audio: The fanfare from the standard logo. Sometimes, it's silent.

Availability: Seen on Aussie PAL tapes of movies from Columbia Pictures, TriStar Pictures, Orion Pictures, Cannon Films, Carolco Pictures, etc. This logo can be seen on I Love You to Death, Total Recall, Punchline, Kamikaze, Bloodsport, Willow, Colors, Messenger of Death, Things Change, Physical Evidence, and Spaceballs (an MGM film that was released by Hoyts in Australia).
