Background

Sony Video Software, Inc. (also known as SVS) was established in 1979 by Sony Corporation of America. In 1991, two years after Sony's acquisition of Columbia Pictures and its sister company Triumph Films, SVS was reincorporated as SVS/Triumph Home Video.

1st Logo (1983-1987)

Visuals: On a black background, a white Sony logo is shown with a registered trademark symbol to the right. Below it, in either a Futura or Avant Garde Gothic font, are the words "VIDEO SOFTWARE OPERATIONS" or "VIDEO SOFTWARE COMPANY".

Technique: A still graphic.

Audio: None.

Availability: Seen on VHS copies of The Snowman, as well as a VHS of Slaughterhouse Rock.

2nd Logo (1987-1991)

Visuals: On a black background, a shiny, serif, blue "S" with a 3D effect to it zooms in while a "V" in the same style swoops in from off-screen and down in an arc. The "S" splits into 2 and move off to the side as the "V" swoops into the middle gap, creating "S V S" just off-center. A blue frame fades in around it, with a larger bottom border, as "INC" slides up to the right in a vertical fashion, with the top facing the left side.

Technique: 2D computer animation.

Audio: A synthesized whoosh followed by a reversed cymbal.

Availability: Seen on '80s prints of The Snowman, Honeymoon Horror, An Unremarkable Life, The Rejuvinator, Best of the Best, Tiger Warsaw, Out of the Body, Night Wars, Cameron's Closet, Spookies, Escape from Safe Haven, Midnight (1988), No Dead Heroes, Summer Job, and One Man Out. It also appeared on a 1998 reprint of Best of the Best with a SVS/Triumph Home Video label and a Columbia TriStar Home Video box.
