Background

Barney Home Video was a vanity imprint used by The Lyons Group for releases of Barney & Friends. The label later became a part of Lyrick Studios, who was later purchased by British company HIT Entertainment. The label was dissolved in 2017.

For the longest time, the imprint had a controversial reputation primarily for its association with Barney & Friends and the eponymous character (which has been ridiculed in multiple videos, especially the GoAnimate ones).

1st Logo (September 2, 1992-September 26, 1995)

Visuals: On the Barney & Friends Season 1 background, the yellow text "Barney", in the Barney corporate logo font, zooms into the center and then to the top of the screen as a blue square fades in, along with the text "HOME VIDEO" below it, sparkling. Inside a square is a cartoon version of Barney shown from the chest up, with his green tummy and one of his hands raised, and Barney's eye "shines" like at the end of the opening credits for Barney and the Backyard Gang and Barney & Friends.

Variants:

  • A variant exists on trailers of some Barney home videos, in which "Also Available From" (in white) on a blue star fades in on the top-corner of the screen.
  • On some videotapes, like Barney's Magical Musical Adventure, the logo replaces the original Barney & Friends title card during the theme song.

Technique: 2D animation, likely done on an Ampex ADO.

Audio: A whimsical, quirky fanfare that interpolates the Barney and the Backyard Gang and Barney & Friends theme song near the end. Composed by Bob Singleton, who also composed the music for the first 3 seasons of Barney & Friends.

Audio Variants:

  • On releases until Let's Pretend With Barney, the logo is silent.
  • The intro variant uses the Barney & Friends theme.
  • On Barney en Vivo en Nueva York (the Spanish version of Barney Live! In New York City), an announcer says "Barney Y Sus Amigos."

Availability: Seen on early Barney videos, from the 1992 VHS of Barney's Birthday (though other copies replace this logo with the CPT and CPB logos of the time) to the 1995 VHS of Riding in Barney's Car (a.k.a. Are We There Yet?).

  • Also appeared on some 1990s prints of Barney in Concert.

Legacy: Although popular with those who grew up with Barney, this logo is mostly considered infamous for its association with the show.

2nd Logo (November 7, 1995-January 24, 2017)

Visuals: A yellow background fades in, which reveals itself to be a CGI star spinning away from the screen and on a blue Magna Doodle-like tube, revealing a cartoon version of Barney, who is holding the tube on a black background. After the star settles into its position, a huge flash occurs, forming the blue word "Barney", in a 3D stylized, Barney corporate logo font in front of the tube and flies up at the top of the screen while the text "HOME VIDEO", with a gray glow, zooms in below, letter-by-letter. Barney's eye shines once, just like the previous logo.

Variants:

  • On the Barney Songs screener, a prototype version exists in which the star turns a bit differently (spinning away from the left of the screen instead of the right), the flash that occurs when the star goes into its position is dim and Barney doesn't wink.
  • From 1996 to 2000, there existed a special variant on Barney tapes part of the "Classic Collection" (such as the 1996 re-prints of the Barney and the Backyard Gang videos) in which the text "CLASSIC COLLECTION" fades in below "HOME VIDEO". The glow is gold here.
  • A promo variant has the star animation playing in reverse at the end.
  • On Barney's Stu-u-u-u-pendous Puzzle Fun!, the logo replaces the opening title card in the Barney & Friends intro, like the previous logo.
  • Two print versions exist: the first moves the "Barney" text to the tube and lacks "HOME VIDEO"; the second has a textless tube and the corporate Barney logo on the left.

Technique: CGI by Intelligent Light Digital Imaging, animated by Tom Rennen using LightWave 3D software.

Audio: Same as the previous logo.

Audio Variants: On Barney's Talent Show, the music is low-pitched.

Availability: It was used for slightly more than 21 years.

  • Seen mainly at the end of DVD and later VHS releases; examples include Barney Songs, Barney's All Aboard for Sharing, Barney's Talent Show, Barney's Sense-ational Day, It's Time for Counting, Barney in Outer Space, Sing and Dance with Barney, Rhyme Time Rhythm, Barney's Musical Castle, You Can Be Anything, Barney Songs from the Park, Barney's Colorful World, Let's Go the Farm and Let's Go to the Beach. In some rare (and often earlier) cases, it appears at the beginning of Barney Home Videos.
  • The Classic Collection variant was seen on tapes and DVDs with the spine with "CLASSIC" and Barney between "COLLECTION"; on DVD releases, the official DVD logo is also on the spine.
    • This variant makes an appearance on I Love My Friends (2012), despite not being part of the line.
  • The label began to be phased out in 2007, but it appeared on newer releases until the mid-2010s (often international ones from distributors such as PolyGram Video, Universal Pictures Home Entertainment and HIT Entertainment).
  • It last appeared on Playground Fun!.

Legacy: Much like the previous logo, this one is infamous for several reasons: its association with Barney & Friends, its animation, its outdated CGI (which was last considered "fresh-looking" in 2001), its abrupt nature and appearance and Barney's grin.
