Background

Overture Films was founded in November 2006 under Starz, LLC, by industry veterans Chris McGurk (CEO) and Danny Rosett (COO). Through Anchor Bay Entertainment, Starz Entertainment Pay Channels, Starz Media, and Starz Play, Overture made its films available worldwide to viewers across multiple platforms via their home video, premium television and Internet distribution channels.

Although Overture had some minor critical successes with such films as Sunshine Cleaning, The Men Who Stare at Goats, Last Chance Harvey and Law Abiding Citizen, they suffered poor box office returns. The Los Angeles Times reported on July 24, 2010 that Starz was to shut Overture down,[1] even though rumors circulated early that year that it would be sold off[2]; film marketing and distribution operations and part of the team were acquired by Relativity Media that same day.[3] Overture was shut down by Starz in October, and the film catalog is owned by Lionsgate Films (through its acquisition of Starz in 2016).

Logo (January 18, 2008-October 8, 2010)

Visuals: On a black background, an arched teal paint stroke wipes in, and "OVERTURE" is being shined over. As the paint stroke finishes drawing, "OVERTURE" changes color from teal to white. Later, the word "FILMS" fades in below in the same font but smaller as the arch turns solid blue. The byline "a starz company" appears below, with "starz" being the 2008 Starz logo.

Variants:

  • Closing variant: At the end of every movie, the phrase "DISTRIBUTED BY" is seen above the logo.
  • A prototype version exists where "FILMS" is smaller, and the Starz byline is in its 2005 font.
  • In 2009, the logo was slightly redesigned. The arc is now more elaborate, the letters have relief, and the Starz byline is gone.
  • On the video game Righteous Kill, the logo is still on a white background. In the sequel for said game, the logo was black & white with new design.
  • A trailer for the 2009 film Pandorum has the logo placed over an eye.
  • On recent prints of their films, the Starz byline is changed to the 2016 Starz logo.

Technique: CGI by Devastudios.

Audio: A soft orchestral theme played by a piano, a violin, and a bass.

Audio Variant: Sometimes, the logo is silent or has the opening theme of the film playing over it.

Availability: Seen on Overture movies like Mad Money (the company's first film), The Visitor, Righteous Kill, Henry Poole is Here, Law Abiding Citizen, and Traitor, among other releases. Also seen on games based on the Righteous Kill franchise.
