Mauricio de Sousa Produções (also known as Estúdios Mauricio de Sousa) is the film, television, publishing and licensing company of Mauricio de Sousa, a famed Brazilian comic book artist and animator. The company was founded on July 18, 1959, but didn't have an onscreen logo until 1982.

Mauricio de Sousa Produções

1st Logo (December 23, 1982-1992)

Visuals: On a dark blue background, a circle of seventeen white stars moves down with an orange trail and retracts its trail as two trailing filmstrip outlines move into place and retract their trails. The stars flash and turn red as a blue dog with shaggy fur (Bidu/Blu, a character from Mauricio's Turma da Mônica comic book series) puts his paws on the bottom row of stars and barks four times, moving as he barks. He then settles in the stars with his head showing and smiling at us and the top zooms out. "ESTÚDIOS MAURICIO DE SOUSA", in Mauricio's handwriting font, moves in as a blue trail and places itself in orange as it's trail moves away. "APRESENTAM" in white then appears letter-by-letter below.

Variants:

  • An abridged version exists on Chico Bento, Óia a Onça!.
  • A text-only, in-credit variant exists on O Natal De Todos Nós.

Technique: A mix of cel animation and Oxberry effects.

Audio: A synth tune with whooshing sounds (sometimes absent) and Bidu/Blu's barks with a dreamy synth tune. Early on, it used the instrumental version of "Sou a Mônica" with the sounds playing over. Starting with Mônica e a Sereia do Rio, the music is now in Dolby Surround.

Audio Variants:

  • Early on, it used the instrumental version of "Sou a Mônica" with the sounds playing over.
  • The abridged version has a male announcer saying "Os Estúdios Mauricio de Sousa apresentam..." and lacks the dreamy synth tune.

Availability: Seen on the Turma da Mônica (Monica's Gang/Monica and Friends) movies of the time. This doesn't appear on the original release of As Aventuras da Turma da Mônica.

2nd Logo (June 29, 1985-January 8, 1986)

Visuals: On a black background, the text "Em co-produção com" appears letter by letter, then sixteen yellow outlines of stars spin and zoom out with a residue effect and settle in the center as they fill in with yellow. They flash and Bidu/Blu's head fades in. "MAURICIO DE SOUSA PRODUÇÕES" is wiped in with a light. Bidu/Blu then raises his ears and blinks a couple of times.

Technique: Cel animation.

Audio: An ominous synth tune that turns into a calm synth tune with a 16-note xylophone/pizzicato melody.

Availability: Seen on Os Trapalhões no Reino da Fantasia and Os Trapalhões no Rabo do Cometa, since both are co-produced by Renato Aragão.

3rd Logo (November 1996-200?)

Visuals: On a tan background with a floor of Mauricio De Sousa Produções logos, nineteen stars fly around and rotate as the camera rotates. A giant ray of light zooms down, forming the name in red and a yellow circle. The stars stop rotating and a redrawn version of Bidu/Blu's head fades in as we rotate to a full-on view of the logo.

Early Variant: On Quadro a Quadro, the background is a gray surface.

Technique: CGI.

Audio: A proud synthesized orchestral theme: a 12-note fanfare, then another 9-note fanfare; probably done on an E-MU Proteus/2. On the Videogibi release entitled A Ilha Misteriosa, a different synth tune is used instead.

Availability:

  • Seen on Videogibi releases of the time such as O Plano Sangrento. This doesn't appear on O Estranho Soro do Doutor X, as it uses the next logo.
  • Also seen on La Banda di Monica, an Italian version of Monica and Friends.
  • The early version was seen only on Quadro a Quadro.

4th Logo (October 1998)

Visuals: On a black background, twelve stars start to fly in (a la Paramount) as it lights up, revealing a orange carpet-like background. The stars form a ring and a light wipes in below, revealing Mauricio's name and "PRODUÇÕES" spreads out. Bidu/Blu appears in the ring of stars, this time with more of his body visible, and barks twice (similar to the 1st logo) as the stars stop rotating.

Technique: CGI with Bidu/Blu being animated traditionally via digital ink-and-paint.

Audio: A synthesized theme with a magical-revealing sound and Bidu/Blu's barks (similar to the 1st logo).

Availability: Seen on the Videogibi release entitled O Estranho Soro do Doutor X and on the PC game, Aventura no Parque da Mônica.

5th Logo (June 4, 2002-2004)

Visuals: Over a blue background, the MSP logo and wordmark zoom in with the stars rotating around the symbol. "A-P-R-E-S-E-N-T-A" zooms in below and the stars stop rotating. The logo then disappears and irises to the cartoon.

Variant: A version exists where the word "A-P-R-E-S-E-N-T-A" is absent and the logo doesn't iris out.

Technique: Simple 2D computer animation.

Audio: A deep horn version of "Sou a Mônica" with whooshing sounds.

Audio Variant: On DVD/VHS prints of the Monica's Gang/Monica and Friends shorts, one of the first notes from one of the show's the theme songs (the 1998 rendition of "A fantasia se torna real" by Márcio Araújo de Sousa) could be heard.

Availability: Seen on VHS/DVD compilations of Monica's Gang/Monica and Friends released by Paramount Home Entertainment, such as the Aventuras em DVD shorts, beginning with O Grande Chuva Voador and the Coleção Grandes Aventuras compilations respectively.

6th Logo (July 9, 2004-2011)

Visuals: On a black background, a star appears at the top, which then spreads out. A yellow circle appears, then Bidu/Blu's head, which then zooms out. The name then appears with some sparkles and "APRESENTA" fades in below.

Variant: A still version exists without "APRESENTA" on the 1st trailer of Turma da Mônica em Uma Aventura no Tempo. There is an alternative version of this at the start of Turma do Penadinho, a CGI series produced with Digital 21.

Technique: 2D computer animation.

Audio: The opening theme with sounds that fit with the logo. On Cine Gibi 2, a woodwind theme (sounding similar to "Sou a Mônica") plays along with the sparkling sounds. The still version has a synthesized chime playing the first 5 notes of "Sou a Mônica".

Availability: Seen on Cine Gibi: O Filme (including its sequel, Cine Gibi 2) and the trailer for Turma da Mônica em Uma Aventura no Tempo.

7th Logo (February 16, 2007-)

Visuals: On a blue gradient background, a star draws out lines with stars popping out. It zooms out and it reveals to be "MAURICIO DE SOUSA", then two stars draw a box and a CGI-rendered version of Bidu/Blu, only his head is visible, pops up as "PRODUÇÕES", spaced out, appears below. Bidu/Blu looks around and blinks.

Variants:

  • A prototype exists where the animation is smoother and Bidu/Blu blinks once he turns his head to the audience.
  • A version exists without "PRODUÇÕES".
  • A warped version exists.
  • On Cine Gibi 5: Luz, Câmera, Ação! and Cine Gibi 4: Meninos e Meninas, "EDITORA" appears below the name.
  • There is a version where the background takes place on a video wall.
  • A widescreen version is used on Turma da Mônica em Uma Aventura no Tempo as well as Turma da Mônica: Laços and Turma da Mônica: Lições.
  • A shorter version also appears on the Se Liga na Turma da Mônica DVDs.

Technique: CGI.

Audio: A synth theme (which is a majestic version of "Sou a Mônica") with whooshes, ending with a 5-note chime sound.

Audio Variant: Sometimes, the chime sound and/or whooshes are absent, such as in CineGibi 3: Planos Infalíveis and for the prototype; the prototype ends with a downwards piano scale that has been prominent at the end of most Turma da Mônica music tracks. On As 12 Badaladas dos Sinos de Natal, the chime sound is replaced with a few bell rings.

Availability: Seen on current releases. It first appeared on Turma da Mônica em Uma Aventura no Tempo, and later seen on some animated productions by the company until 2017. As of 2019, it is also still used on live-action productions, such as Turma da Mônica: Laços and Turma da Mônica: Lições.

Variants:

  • A still version exists.
  • A version without Bidu/Blu exists on Astronauta: Propulsão teasers.
