Background

Art Theatre Guild was a Japanese film production and distribution company founded in 1961. The company played a major role in Japan's arthouse industry, especially during the establishment of the Japanese New Wave movement of the 1960s; it also was a major distributor of Western art films in the country. The company had strong connections to major studio Toho. In 2018, all of the company's assets were absorbed to Toho after 26 years of inactivity.
