Background

BBC Knowledge was an early BBC digital channel available in cable, satellite and terrestrial broadcasting. It was launched on 1 June 1999, and provided programmes of documentary, cultural and educational television. The channel would close down on 2 March 2002 and was replaced by BBC Four.

1st ID (1 June 1999-2000)

Visuals: There is cartoon characters climbing ladders on an orange background, while showing items like a magnifying glass, a telescope or a roll of paper. Eventually, the screen is centred in one ladder, while the BBC Knowledge logo appears below.

Technique: Hand-drawn cartoonish animation.

Audio: Unknown.

2nd Logo (2000-2 March 2002)

Visuals: There is several sorts of circles or rings zooming quickly towards the screen while the background changes colour: First, a ring made of flame on a red background, then a ring of red numbers on a green background, a water puddle on a blue background, a spinning ring of metal on an orange background, and finally a green eye iris on a background of the same colour. All of this repeats.

Technique: CGI.

Audio: An "orchestral" version of the previous logo's music.
