Background
TV 2 was launched on June 30, 1975, and was renamed to South Pacific Television the next year. It would later regain the TV 2 name when it and TV One merged under Television New Zealand on February 15, 1980.
1st Logo (1980-1985)
Logo: We see the blue flag from the TVNZ logo at the time unfolding on the same space background, only instead of the Union Jack and four red/white stars, it has a red/white "Two" on it. The flag zooms out to the bottom, and then bright lights flash behind it, forming four white stars in the same position as on New Zealand's flag which zoom in, and more lights flash before the entire logo glows brightly.
FX/SFX: The flag unfolding and the flashing lights.
Music/Sounds: A shorter version of the 1980 TVNZ jingle.
Availability: Extinct. Check any PAL-format tapes from New Zealand from that period for this logo.
2nd Logo (1985-1988)
Nickname: "Colored Balls"
Logo: On a black background, a blue line and a red line zoom in along with the word "TELEVISION". When they stop, they immediately fade out, and two "2"s, one facing backwards, slide in from the left and right and stop in the middle. Two more "2"s, one in blue and one in red, slide in towards the center and rotate to their normal position when the background becomes a black-blue-white gradient color with red and blue spheres on the bottom on a jet black floor. "TELEVISION" then re-appears on top. The "2" also appears to have lights on it.
FX/SFX: The zooming and the logo parts joining together.
Music/Sounds: Drumbeats, then a horn theme, and chimes when the logo flashes.
Availability: Extinct.
3rd Logo (1988-1989)
Logo: On a blue-coral pink gradient sky background, we see several glass shards and panes flying and shifting around, and the word "NETWORK" appears in one of them before the letters "NE" and "RK" disappear, leaving the word "TWO", which glows. Then the shard with the "TWO" on it twirls briefly, then shifts back into position.
FX/SFX: The animation comes from the CASCOM Select Effects library.
Music/Sounds: A new-age orchestra synth tune, with a choir sounder.
Availability: Extinct.
4th Logo (1989-1995)
Logo: In a black environment, we fly upwards. We see a gigantic cylindrical platform with a series of multicolored CGI trails going in vertical ways around it. A giant fuchsia double-ring with an orange "2" on it flies onto it, then we pan to a bird's-eye view.
FX/SFX: Great CGI.
Music/Sounds: A catchy synthesized rockabilly tune combined with percussion and a handsome male voice singing "SHAAAARE the best, with Channel 2! Channel 2!".
Availability: Extinct.
5th Logo (1995-1997)
Nickname: "Keep Your Eyes on 2"
Logo: We see a montage of people watching television, various shots of the TV2 logo, people dancing, and various programs on television screens (including The Simpsons, Mr. Bean and Robocop). Finally, we see a light blue "2" between various light blue and orange shapes, which zoom away to leave the "2", and a white line passes by it and leaves a split in its middle, completing the TV2 logo.
FX/SFX: The montage and the logo forming.
Music/Sounds: TBD.
Availability: Extinct. Seen on many TV2 airings of the era like The Simpsons, Shortland Street, Mr. Bean, etc.
6th Logo (1997-2003)
Nickname: "We/I/You Only Wanna Be With 2"
Logo: We see a garage open. Then, two people inspect a bus, as shots of them repairing and redecorating it are shown. Several New Zealand celebrities are riding the bus, which now has the TV2 logo on it, and are gradually joined by more celebrities as a montage of them having fun in the bus plays. The celebrities are then shown having fun on the beach, then the montage resumes, and a new montage with scenes of a concert is shown. Finally the bus is shown driving away as the TV2 logo appears on the bottom right corner.
Trivia: A brief clip of The Simpsons is shown at one point.
FX/SFX: Live action video footage.
Music/Sounds: A rock rendition of the popular song "I Only Wanna Be With You" by Dusty Springfield.
Availability: Extinct. Seen on many TV2 airings of the era like The Simpsons, Shortland Street, etc.
7th Logo (2003-2005)
Nickname: "In the Neighbourhood"
Logo: We see footage of people engaging in several abilities (listening to conch shells, swimming in the sea, surfing, riding bicycles, etc.), with several scenes including the TV2 logo on a circular object. At the end, the TV2 logo appears on a circular object on a night city background, while the words "in the neighbourhood" appear above.
FX/SFX: Live action video footage.
Music/Sounds: The song "In the Neighbourhood" by Sisters Underground.
Availability: Extinct. Seen on many TV2 airings of the era.
8th Logo (2005-2008)
Nickname: "Red Painting"
Logo: We see various globs of red paint dissolve in water. They briefly cover the screen, before the TV2 logo, now in red and without the split in its middle, appears.
FX/SFX: TBD.
Music/Sounds: A dreamy guitar theme.
Availability: Extinct. Seen on many TV2 airings of the era.
9th Logo (2008-2012)
Nickname: "Hero, Love the Feeling"
Logo: On a rooftop background at sunset, we see several small squares flying through the antennae and forming the TV2 logo, which is initially red before fading to blue. "LOVE THE FEELING" appears below.
FX/SFX: TBD.
Music/Sounds: A soft rock song.
Availability: Extinct. Seen on many TV2 airings of the era.
10th Logo (2012-2016)
Nickname: "Just Like a Champion"
Logo: We see a close up of a drummer hitting a cymbal. This is followed by several slow-motion videoclips of people engaging in various activities (a father bouncing on a trampoline with his daughter). After a while, several blue, yellow, purple and pink "2"s start flying around in the videoclips.
FX/SFX: TBD.
Music/Sounds: A soft rock tune with "Oooohhh..." vocals.
Availability: Seen on many TV2 airings until 2016.
