Background
TV One was launched on 1 June 1960 as NZBC TV, and would later change its name on 1 April 1975. It was independent until it and TV 2 merged under Television New Zealand on 15 February 1980. It's not to be confused with the current U.S. African American network TV One jointly owned by Comcast Corporation and Radio One, Inc.
1st Logo (April 1, 1975-1985)
Visuals: On a black background, parts of an odd-looking shape (with a white outline and a yellow trail) spin around and zoom out. When the shape stops spinning, a red streak rises up then curves around the top part of the shape, followed by an orange streak, then yellow, green, blue, purple, and finally a rainbow streak. When the rainbow streak stops, the shape splits up to reveal the words "one" in a curvy font (very similar to Alba), which appears in an outline first, but then white streaks wipe in around the letters and fill them. Then the screen fades out.
Variant: Another variant exists where the rainbow is formed first, then the white part which forms an "o", and then zooms out revealing the logo. "The word "Television" also appears.
Technique: 2D animation.
Audio: A guitar, drum, and flute tune, with some bells towards the end, which is actually "Presentation 3" by Brian Bennett.
Audio Variants:
- A different version of the music exists, which is "Presentation (link)" by the same composer.
- The variant uses the last 10 seconds of "Trilogy" by Emerson, Lake & Palmer.
2nd Logo (1980)
Visuals: A red flag unfolds on a starry background, with a blue "One" on it. It zooms out, and then bright lights flash behind it, forming four white stars which zoom in. Both elements meet up and glow brightly, while the stars flash repeatedly.
Technique: Scanimate.
Audio: An abridged version of the 1980 TVNZ jingle.
3rd Logo (1985-1987)
Visuals: On a black background, red, green, blue, white, and yellow streaks (in circle shapes and a "Y" shape) shoot out at the same time, and different-colored "pulses" (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple) zoom towards the viewer. A white streak zooms forward and spins around (kinda like the opposite of the Embassy "Rolling E" logo) then turns orange to reveal the then-current Television One logo, with "ONE" being bigger than "TELEVISION". The screen fades out when it stops zooming and spinning.
Technique: 2D animation.
Audio: An upbeat horn/bassoon fanfare. There are also drums and cymbals heard in the background.
4th ID (1987-1989)
Visuals: On a black background with a curved blue horizon in the distance, 5 golden beams shoot out from behind it. We follow one of the beams, as a rotating piece of glass is seen in it. As we close in on it, the letters "O", "N", and "E" rapidly go through the glass. As the beam fades into a blue backdrop, the letters return to the glass and align to form the "ONE" logo of the time.
Technique: CGI by Rhythm & Hues.
Audio: A lowering synth noise at the beginning, moving into a fast synth-horn fanfare which slows on the last 3 notes.
5th ID (1990-1991)
Visuals: There is a sea with a clear sky, as the "ONE" glass rectangle from the previous logo rises up from the water. We then see an aerial shot of New Zealand as the glass shoots through some clouds and then off-screen. Then the camera pans over New Zealand as pictures of various major cities of New Zealand (Dunedin, Christchurch, Wellington, and Auckland) from the land and float past the camera. After this, the camera pans to the sky as the glass rectangle returns to the center of the screen.
Technique: CGI.
Audio: A re-recorded and longer version of the 4th logo's music.
6th ID (1991-1992)
Visuals: The screen pans across several silver abstract shapes. A silver-gold streak of light moves across the edges of some of the shapes. The streaks stop as the camera zooms out and the shapes turn into the gold "ONE" logo on a dark blue background.
Technique: 2D animation.
Audio: Yet another re-recording of the 4th logo's music.
7th ID (1992-1994)
Visuals: The camera pans across several close-ups of the One logo. At the end it moves out to show the whole logo, as lens flare shines on the top of the "O". The tagline "New Zealand's ONE" appears beneath the logo.
Variants:
- At least one variation exists with various everyday scenes mixed in with the close-ups of the logo, as well as having a light blue background at the end.
- A variant exists at the end of the film Forgotten Silver where it segues into the NZ On Air logo with the text in white saying "For More Great Programming From" to the left of "New Zealand" with a green line below, "On" with a red line below, and "Air" with a blue line below.
Technique: CGI.
Audio: Another re-recording of the 4th logo's music, this time with flutes and a slight Celtic sound to it.
Availability: The New Zealand On Air variant is preserved on the DVD of Forgotten Silver.
8th ID (1994-1995)
Visuals: Various New Zealanders doing various activities, as well as various shots of places and scenery. At the end, the "ONE" logo appears as the background fades to black.
Technique: Live-action.
Audio: A vocal jingle, with the tagline "Together we're ONE".
9th ID (1996-1999)
Visuals: The screen focuses on a skyline above a layer or clouds with the sun in the distance. Fireworks then explode, briefly showing the Southern Cross. Larger outlines of stars then rotate, as another outline appears in the center of the screen, with smaller circles with "1"s inside them. Fireworks explode yet again, revealing the "ONe" logo on a curved blue background.
Technique: CGI.
Audio: A calm jingle, with the vocal tagline "Together we're One".
10th ID (1999-2002)
Visuals: The "ONe" logo fades in through a water-like ripple effect. The background is blue and takes looks like the pupil and iris of an abstract eye.
Technique: CGI.
Audio: An "abstract new-age" vocal jingle.
11th ID (Summer 2002)
Visuals: Unknown.
Technique: Unknown.
Audio: Unknown.
12th ID (2004-2007)
Visuals: A person is seen doing an action (for example, a man driving). The person points a finger to a side of the screen, then the One logo fades in, revealing that the person's pointing at the logo.
Technique: Live-action and a single fade-in.
Audio: It depends.
13th ID (2007-2008)
Visuals: Unknown
Technique: Unknown
Audio: For the generic logo, an acoustic theme is heard. For the other variants, it varies. One of the variants uses a rock theme, while others use another acoustic theme. This was made part of used this song as "Light Surrounding You" by Evermore.

Visuals:
- As a generic logo, it used a blurred background, with red circular bubbles moving on the screen. One of them divides into another one, which moves to the center as the "ONe" wordmark fades in, making the logo.
- Other idents used people talking at the camera about a certain topic in different locations of New Zealand, and in the last few seconds the One logo and "of us" appear by order with effects, making the slogan.
Variants:
- Sometimes the generic logo has a different animation.
- Christmas variants also exist.
Technique: CGI for the generics. Some live-action for the other idents.
Audio: None for the generics. "Something In The Water" by Brooke Fraser is heard on other idents along with the people's voices.
