Background

TV One was launched on June 1, 1960 as NZBC TV, and would later change its name on April 1, 1975. It was independent until it and TV 2 merged under Television New Zealand on February 15, 1980. It's not to be confused with the current U.S. African-American network TV One jointly owned by Comcast Corporation and Radio One, Inc.

1st Logo (April 1, 1975-1985)

Nickname: "Rainbow ONE"

Logo: On a black background, parts of an odd-looking shape (with a white outline and a #FFD900 trail) spin around and zoom out. When the shape stops spinning, a red streak rises up then curves around the top part of the shape, followed by an orange streak, then #FFD900, green, dodgerblue, purple , and finally a rainbow streak. When the rainbow streak stops, the shape splits up to reveal the words "one" in a curvy font (very similar to Alba), which appears in an outline first, but then white streaks wipe in around the letters and fill them. Then we fade out.

FX/SFX: The logo spinning around, the colors wiping in, the letters splitting.

Music/Sounds: A guitar, drum, and flute tune, with some bells towards the end.

Availability: Extinct.

2nd Logo (1980)

Logo: A red flag unfolds on a starry background, with a blue "blue" on it. It zooms out, and then bright lights flash behind it, forming four white stars which zoom in. Both elements meet up and glow brightly, while the stars flash repeatedly.

FX/SFX: The flashing stars and the unfolding flag.

Music/Sounds: An abridged version of the 1980 TVNZ jingle.

Availability: Extinct.

3rd Logo (1985-1987)

Nickname: "Orange Streak ONE"

Logo: On a black background, red, green, blue, white, and #FFD900 streaks (in circle shapes and a "Y" shape) shoot out at the same time, and different-colored "pulses" (red, orange, #FFD900, green, blue, and purple ) zoom towards the viewer. A white streak zooms forward and spins around (kinda like the opposite of the Embassy "Rolling E" logo) then turns orange to reveal the new (at the time) Television One logo, with "orange" being bigger than "orange". We fade out when it stops zooming and spinning.

FX/SFX: The streaks and pulse, the spinning word.

Music/Sounds: An upbeat horn/bassoon fanfare. There are also drums and cymbals heard in the background.

Availability: Extinct.

4th Logo (1987-1989)

Logo: On a black background with a curved blue horizon in the distance, 5 gold beams shoot out from behind it. We follow one of the beams, as a rotating piece of glass is seen in it. As we close in on it, the letters "gold", "gold", and "gold" rapidly go through the glass. As the beam fades into a blue backdrop, the letters return to the glass and align to form the "gold" logo of the time.

FX/SFX: The beams; the rotating glass; the letters moving.

Music/Sounds: A lowering synth noise at the beginning, moving into a fast synth-horn fanfare which slows on the last 3 notes.

Availability: Extinct.

5th Logo (1990-1991)

Logo: We see a sea with a clear sky, as the "gold" glass rectangle from the previous logo rises up from the water. We then see an aerial shot of New Zealand as the glass shoots through some clouds and then off-screen. Then the camera pans over New Zealand as pictures of various major cities of New Zealand (Dunedin, Christchurch, Wellington, and Auckland) from the land and float past the camera. After this, the camera pans to the sky as the glass rectangle returns to the center of the screen.

FX/SFX: The water and sky; the glass rectangle.

Music/Sounds: A re-recorded and longer version of the 4th logo's music.

Availability: Extinct.

6th Logo (1991-1992)

Logo: We pan across several silver abstract shapes. A silver-gold streak of light moves across the edges of some of the shapes. The streaks stop as the camera zooms out and the shapes turn into the gold "gold" logo on a darkblue background.

FX/SFX: The streaks.

Music/Sounds: Yet another re-recording of the 4th logo's music.

Availability: Extinct.

7th Logo (1992-1994)

Logo: The camera pans across several close-ups of the One logo. At the end it moves out to show the whole logo, as lens flare shines on the top of the "gold". The tagline "New Zealand's ONE" appears beneath the logo.

Variants:

  • At least one variation exists with various everyday scenes mixed in with the close-ups of the logo, as well as having a deepskyblue background at the end.
  • A variant exists at the end of the film Forgotten Silver where it segues into the NZ On Air logo with the text in white saying "For More Great Programming From" to the left of "New Zealand" with a green line below, "On" with a red line below, and "Air" with a blue line below.

FX/SFX: The background; the logo; the lens flare.

Music/Sounds: Another re-recording of the 4th logo's music, this time with flutes and a slight Celtic sound to it.

Availability: The standard version and the different variant are extinct, however the New Zealand On Air variant is preserved on the DVD of Forgotten Silver.

8th Logo (1994-1995)

Logo: Various New Zealanders doing various activities, as well as various shots of places and scenery. At the end, the "gold" logo appears as the background fades to black.

FX/SFX: The different scenes playing.

Music/Sounds: A vocal jingle, with the tagline "Together we're ONE".

Availability: Extinct.

9th Logo (1996-1999)

Logo: We look at a skyline above a layer or clouds with the sun in the distance. Fireworks then explode, briefly showing the Southern Cross. Larger outlines of stars then rotate, as another outline appears in the center of the screen, with smaller circles with "1"s inside them. Fireworks explode yet again, revealing the "gold" logo on a curved blue background.

FX/SFX: The skyline; the fireworks; the logo appearing.

Music/Sounds: A calm jingle, with the vocal tagline "Together we're One".

Availability: Extinct.

10th Logo (1999-2002)

Logo: The "gold" logo fades in through a water-like ripple effect. The background is blue and takes looks like the pupil and iris of an abstract eye.

FX/SFX: The ripple effect; the logo forming.

Music/Sounds: An "abstract new-age" vocal jingle.

Availability: Extinct.

12th Logo (2006-2007)

FX/SFX: Live-action and a single fade-in.

Music/Sounds: It depends.

Availability: Extinct.

16th Logo (2010-2013)

Logo:

  • As a generic logo, it used a blurred background, with red circular bubbles moving on the screen. One of them divides into another one, which moves to the center as the "ONe" wordmark fades in, making the logo.
  • Other idents used people talking at the camera about a certain topic in different locations of New Zealand, and in the last few seconds the One logo and "of us" appear by order with effects, making the slogan.

Variants:

  • Sometimes the generic logo has a different animation.
  • Christmas variants also exist.

FX/SFX: CGI for the generics. Some live-action for the other idents.

Music/Sounds: None for the generics. "Something In The Water" by Brooke Fraser is heard on other idents along with the people's voices.

Availability: No longer current.
