Background

WSIU is a PBS member station located in Carbondale, Illinois. It first signed on the air on September 6, 1961. It has a satellite channel called WUSI, located in Olney, Illinois, which signed on the air in August 19, 1968.

1st Logo (1980s-Early 1990s)

Visuals: On a nighttime view of the Pulliam Hall clock tower in the Southern Illinois University, there is a lime green "WSIU" with a bigger "TV" below it, with a giant "8" next to it. Below the text is "CARBONDALE". After the announcer finishes speaking, the logo flies up, beginning the program.

Technique: 2D computer effects.

Audio: An announcer that says "WSIU-TV, channel 8, Carbondale.". Then a synthesized trailing noise.

Availability: It was only seen on SIU Night Report.

2nd Logo (1990s)

Visuals: A short montage of various screens and devices in a studio is seen, with each camera shot fading into each other. One of the screens displays the 1993 PBS logo. After three seconds, a close-up shot of a spinning reel is shown, and white text reading " A PRODUCTION OF WSIU8 Carbondale" fades in and is chyroned over the shot of the spinning reel. "WSIU8" is in sans-serif and slanted inwards, "A PRODUCTION OF" is in a serif font, and "Carbondale" is in a monospace font. After about 2 1/2 seconds, the logo fades.

Technique: Live action footage and 2D chyron effects.

Audio: A 4-note crystal-like tune. Same as the 3rd logo.

Availability: It was seen on episodes of the 1995-1996 season of Scholastic Hi-Q.

3rd Logo (2001-2013)

Visuals: On a background of a tree-lined sunset, a glassy, partially transparent P-head fades in. Five bubbles pop out of the P-head's eye containing the following items; slow motion footage of a hummingbird flapping its wings, the Illinois State Capitol building in Springfield, IL, a Scholastic Hi-Q game, a ballet dancer's feet, and a transparent one that contains the following text, with a fish-eye effect;

A Production of
WSIU
WUSI
Carbondale
Olney

The first four bubbles circle around and go back into the P-head's eye as it gradually fades out, but the last one zooms towards the viewer and stops in the middle of the screen. All while this is happening, the transparent phrases, "candidates", "outreach", "community leaders", "FEATURES", "POLITICS", "information", "documentaries", "human interest", "public affairs", "ISSUES", and "NEWS", appear and move around the screen in different directions.

Variant: A widescreen version exists.

Technique: 2D computer effects.

Audio: A 5-note crystal-like synth tune.

Audio Variant: In this logo's earlier years, the theme from the Houston Public Television 40th anniversary logo is used.

Availability: Can be seen on One on One, which can be viewed at the American Archive of Public Broadcasting. Can also be seen on WSIU InFocus and Scholastic Hi-Q.

4th Logo (2017-)

Visuals: Unknown

Technique: 2D computer effects.

Audio: Same as the previous logo.

Audio Variant: On the Scholastic Hi-Q episode "Carterville v. Fairfield 2924," the logo is silent.
