Background

MTV (which stands for Music Television) is a American television cable channel that was launched on August 1, 1981.

Edit section

One Small Step (August 1, 1981-May 14, 1984)

Videos

Visuals: There are some footage of Apollo 11 launching into space and Neil Armstrong stepping out, leading to images of Neil Armstrong putting up a flag. The flag has the MTV logo (a big blocky "M" with a scribble "TV" next to it, and "MUSIC TELEVISION" underneath) and the logo on the flag changes different colors.

Trivia: This is essentially a truncated version of MTV's first sign-on sequence from August 1, 1981; the main difference, aside from it being shorter, is the absence of a voiceover.

Variant: A much shorter version exists.

Technique: A mix of live-action footage and photomontage by Perpetual Motion Pictures (now Buzzco Associates).

Audio: A rocket launching sound, followed by beeping and a rock theme composed by Jonathan Elias.

Audio Variants:

  • A prototype version of this ID played Neil Armstrong's "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind" quote before the rock theme. This was never used on air due to MTV needing permission to use the quote.
  • When this first aired during MTV's launch on August 1, 1981, John Lack (executive vice-president of Warner-Amex Satellite Entertainment) said "Ladies and gentlemen, rock and roll" before the rock theme.
  • The short version uses a different synth theme.

Legacy: This is a favorite of many, as it was the very first ident shown on MTV.

M-T Room (August 1, 1981-1987)

Videos

Visuals: In a black and white room, a television set with the MTV logo in it zooms out from the screen a few times to the music; each time it stops, a cartoon explosion effect occurs. After the fourth time which it happens only this time the "TV" letters stay there and then the TV transforms into the "M" as it rotates toward the camera. The logo then fully forms, the background turning completely black when it does.

Technique: 2D animation against a live-action background. Done by Colossal Pictures.

Audio: A laidback rock jingle that concludes with a guitar sting once the logo is done.

Swick (August 1, 1981-1987)

Videos

Visuals: There is the MTV logo on a wooden platform atop a green hill on a dark blue gradient background as the logo changes patterns in time with the music.

Technique: A mix of photomontage and 2D animation by Broadcast Arts.

Audio: The theme from the "One Small Step" ID.

Jackson Pollack (August 1, 1981-1987)

Videos

Visuals: On a white background, a man shown from below paints the word "TV" in yellow on the screen. He then adds some yellow flourishes and pours blue paint to form an "M", which obscures him, and "MUSIC TELEVISION" appears below the MTV logo.

Technique: Claymation by Broadcast Arts.

Audio: Painting sounds.

Bubblegum (August 1, 1981-1987)

Videos

Visuals: A girl on a street with a blank MTV logo on it licks her finger, and spits out some gum. Then, the girl screams and runs away from a coming car. Then, a man steps on the gum and forms "TV" on the logo, and as the camera pans up, the litter pushes down the "MUSIC TELEVISION" text.

Technique: Claymation by Broadcast Arts.

Audio: A licking sound, followed by a bunch of sound effects.

Electric Wet (August 12, 1981-1987)

Videos

Visuals: Amongst some thunder clouds, there is a giant metallic MTV logo slowly rising from a pool of water. As it does so, thunderbolts strike the logo. When it rises to stationary position, a bolt wipes across below it to reveal "MUSIC TELEVISION" in yellow.

Technique: A mix of live-action and 2D by Broadcast Arts.

Audio: A hard rock jingle and various thunder claps.

Pre-Christmas Card (December 18, 1981-1987)

Videos

Visuals: There is the MTV logo (with the "M" in green and "TV" in a candy cane pattern) buried in snow. Then two angels holding guitars fly into the scene, with one of them plugging a cord into the logo, which turns into an amplifier and flashes. Another angel with a drum set flies down as they continue playing.

Technique: 2D animation by Perpetual Motion Pictures (now Buzzco Associates).

Audio: An instrumental version of "We Wish You a Merry Christmas" that turns into a rock rendition when the angels plug in their guitars.

Availability: Only shown during Christmastime between 1981 and 1987.

Post-Christmas Card (December 26, 1981-1987)

Videos

Visuals: It begins with "Pre-Christmas Card", starting at the angels plugging a cord into the logo. The logo shakes and an explosion happens, revealing a yellow background and the MTV logo wearing a party hat and party blower, which it blows.

Eventually, the counter hits zero and the eyes make their way to the face. When the face looks up, he sees a television screen and smiles. The logo zooms into the screen to see a blue and green MTV logo on a pink background.

Technique: Hand drawn animation.

Audio: Metallic clanging; a beeping synth tune that reaches to a heroic sounding flourish at the end.

Slow Bob (1988-1993)

Visuals: There are two variants of this ID:

  • The first ID involves a female conjoined twin climbing up the stairs carrying a paintbrush and two paint buckets, arguing. The left twin looks into the keyhole, which reveals a triangular room with a boy at the top in a fetal position with a lizard next to him. There is also a shadow of a window that turns with the MTV logo on it.
  • The second ident shows a white bordered black sign with a black & white man in a 19th Century first class suit moving his arms as the camera zooms out. Next to that sign is a ladder. The next shot shows two lampposts, a traffic light, a yellow triangle sign that say "Yield" and 11 different black & white photos of people with the same amount of scissors. The scissors turn to face the left side of the screen and the photos change as the scissors fly offscreen. The scissors fly towards the man in the sign, who dodges all of them, ultimately shattering the scissors before he jumps out, revealing him in full color. The sign rolls up to show a green side with the MTV logo.

Technique: Stop-motion animation by Henry Selick.

Audio:

  • 1st ID: A suspenseful organ theme with the girls saying "Come on!", "Out of my way!" and "Ow!", followed by howl-like sounds, a dog barking and a door creaking.
  • 2nd ID: A high-pitched whistling sound, which changes to a 3 note horn piece and jet-engine whooshes. A crash, followed by sounds of falling metal and a muffled explosion are heard afterwards.

Alien Autopsy (1991-1993)

Videos

Videos

Visuals: There is the same countdown effect from the "Alien Operation Game" ID. Then a group of doctors are seen carefully putting down an alien and severing its black eyelids. Then, a doctor gets a medical supply to cut open the alien's stomach (a drip of blood can be seen leaking before the stomach is open). The doctors then dig inside the alien, only for them to find luminescence reflecting. Then, the MTV logo with green/yellow colors is pulled out by one of the doctors, much to its disgust.

Technique: Live-action with a bit of claymation by Octopus Creations Inc. Produced and directed by Robert J. Marino.

Audio: A theme which is lacking the silly nature from "Alien Operation Game", accompanied with a voiceover saying "Roswell, New Mexico. Two casualties were recovered from the wreckage of an unidentified flying object. The doctors on duty that day were delegated to the supreme responsibility of documenting mankind's first recorded contact with an alien species. What is this? Amazingly, there seems to be luminescence emanating from inside the cavity itself! Any guesses as good as another as to what this perplexing icon represents." If you listen closely, a heartbeat can be heard at the end.

Mirror (1991-1995)

Videos

Visuals: Unknown... Suddenly, there are two dressed men pulling chains away from each other, causing a box to materialize and stretch in until it forms a square shape. The screen then cuts to a wide shot of the two men and the box, revealing that the chains are actually connected to the ends of the box. The men continue pulling, causing the box to split and form the familiar MTV "Big M" logo. When it's completely formed, the stylized "TV" letters fade in on the right side of the "M" at the same time as "MUSIC TELEVISION", which is seen below in Helvetica.

Technique: Stop-motion by Wolfgang and Christoph Lauenstein.

Audio: First, there is a strange eerie tune with sounds of water. Then, sounds of dragging are heard when the men are pulling the box and an echoing thud when the logo is completely formed.

Availability: A short version of this bumper was also used by MTV Productions and MTV Home Video during the 1990s.

Videos

Visuals: Throughout the ident only shows Peter Lorre himself walking while confusingly looked at the back of his suit having the MTV logo imprinted on it.

Trivia: This ident is referencing the 1931 Fritz Lang movie, M, a movie which the titular character starred in, which the letter M can be seen written on the back of Lorre's suit. With the M being written on his back and the letter M is the starting letter of MTV, it's likely this movie was chosen to be referenced.

Metal Machine (1991-1995)

Videos

Visuals: There is a seemingly metal centipede moving around a junkyard at night. It crawls into a hole and it becomes an insect-like flying robot. It then flies, and a red/orange dragon with a centipede-like body. Said dragon chases the flying robot around the junkyard. The robot gets in a machine/castle, which closes its gate. The dragon tries to get in, but fails. The robot flies around the castle until finding a power source and activating it. Electricity runs through the machine/castle, and wheels and drills on it turn. At the lower part, "legs" pull part of the machine/castle out and it becomes shaped like an "M". The "TV" is made with other parts on the machine/castle.

Technique: Stop-motion by John Peyson.

Audio: Unknown

Legacy: Though considered by creepy by some, many considered this a cool logo.

Transformer (1992-1997)

Videos

Visuals: The ident takes place in Japan, which was evident with the text "MUSIC TELEVISION" written in Katakana. As the camera moves closer to the MTV logo on top of the building, the MTV logo then transforms into a full-on Transformer. The villain (presumably) then ordered 3 helicopters to attack the Transformer by running into it, only for them to collide against each other and explode as the MTV transformer crouched on the rooftop. Another helicopter flies above it, then grabs the V in "TV" and used it as a boomerang, throwing it against the helicopter, exploding it in process. A light ray shines through the transformer which turns out to be the villain's jet, activated laser rays, which then started to shield itself by forming back into the MTV logo. The transformer then grabbed the T in "TV" next, which acts as a lightsaber of sorts, finally swerved onto the plane and explodes, and the ident ends.

Technique: Hand drawn animation by Brian Gaidry.

Audio: Transforming noises, helicopters, boomerang swooshes, explosions, laser rays, etc.

Scary Chinese Halloween (October 24-31, 1992)

Videos

Visuals: There is a background of rapidly changing images such as a skeleton clown and a black cat/bat. A skeleton is also shown, along with flying black cats with wings across the screen. Chinese text appears at the bottom of the screen with a jack-o'-lantern stretching across the screen. Then, there is an MTV jack-o'-lantern with the "MUSIC TELEVISION" text in Chinese. The "TV" portion falls off.

Technique: Photomontage by Beau Tardy.

Audio: An array of spooky sounds like cackling, creaking for the jack-o'-lantern, and a woman screaming at the end.

B World (1992-1997)

Videos

Visuals: In a city populated by B's, there is an observatory, as one of the B observed an extraterrestrial of sorts. The B observer then notified the B scientist that there was an extraterrestrial, which then lead to contacting the B President, then planned to engage a whole army of small letter B's. B rockets were shooting high, the radio tower is sending a signal, as many of the B's were panicking, as well as the B teacher and the B preschoolers, reaching towards the UFO. 3 of the small letter B soldiers were shaking their legs. When the UFO finally landed, the extraterrestrial the B observed previously turned out to be a big purple letter M, with two other letters T and V in blue, forming to resemble the MTV logo.

Technique: Hand drawn animation by The Ink Tank.

Audio: Unknown

Trivia: The plot was mostly a reference to B movies. In this case is science fiction, hence almost every population in the world were all B's.

Atama (October 1995-1996)

Videos

Visuals: There is a shirtless, goblin-like man (some people might think of Marilyn Manson) at a table with utensils. He breaks some food, and small, white, featureless humanoids come out. They climb on the man and enter his body through the orifices. He tries to stop some of them, but then his head bulges and eventually explodes from him sneezing. Then an M is formed by the white creatures, two of them with wings fly across, and a ribbon with "Music Television" written on it falls on the M. Intestines then come out of the stack and from "TV".

Technique: Stop-motion animation by Keito Kurosaka.

Audio: A bell note is heard at the start of the ID. The man gasps when he finds the creatures in his food, which is followed by shuffling from the creatures and the man panting in fear. Sneezing and a boom is heard when the man's head explodes and there is gobbling and a whistle sound when it cuts to the MTV logo.

Availability: Shown on Halloween.

Legacy: This logo is creative, but can be difficult to watch for some due to its disgusting nature. However, given that this was a Halloween logo, this was likely intentional.

Big Chew (1995-1998)

Videos

Visuals: Over a blue background, a blue humanoid character with two long black hairs, exaggerated cheeks and a red bow tie reaches into his torso, and pulls out a green bar of gum, with green slime leaking from his mouth afterwards. The gum bar has a yellow image of a man along with text reading "DULLARD," with "BIG CHEW" underneath it. He then starts to chew it, causing his face to warp in a surreal manner, eventually causing him to spit out orange slime, which he grabs and forms into the MTV logo.

Technique: 2D animation by Tom Cushwa.

Audio: A strange synth theme with giggling and other bodily sounds heard throughout, ending on a "splat."

Legacy: The subject matter of this logo is quite bizarre.

Munch Scream (1995-1998)

Videos

Visuals: A recreation of "The Scream" by Edvard Munch is shown, with the man in the painting looking around before letting out a loud, drawn-out scream, which he prepares beforehand. The screen zooms into his uvula, which has the MTV logo on it drawn in white, before zooming out. The man then covers his mouth, as if he feels sick or exhausted.

Technique: Hand drawn animation by Stefano Koltsidopoulof.

Audio: A grunt, followed by the scream, and another mouth sound.

North/East (1995-1998)

Videos

Visuals: There is a time-lapse shot of a street in Times Square, with a horsedrawn carriage sitting in the center as cars go by. After the carriage leaves, the camera pans up to show a building, presumably a department store (a Wu-Tang Clan logo can be seen on the right side of it), with a double-paneled neon-lit sign atop it. Both sides of the sign have the MTV logo on a black-and-white shield on a yellow background, but either side reads "NORTH" or "EAST" on the top part of the shield. The lights in the rest of the shot dim (sans the MTV sign and the electronic billboard signage in the background) as the camera stops moving.

Technique: Live-action time-lapse footage.

Audio: A drum and bass tune with sounds of a city, ending with a reverse cymbal.

Clayfoot (1996-1998)

Videos

Visuals: The camera pans to a close-up of the MTV logo engraved in clay. After panning through the whole logo, it cuts to a woman with frizzy lair cuddling a white pillow. The screen then cuts to a close-up of her eye, which opens, then the camera cuts to various hands waving in the air as feathers fly across the setting. The woman tears the pillow apart, then we get a brief shot of her dress before cutting to the camera rotating around her. The screen cuts back to the hands flying in the air before cutting right back to the aforementioned MTV logo. A bare foot appears and smudges the logo away, with some close-up footage of the process.

Variant: There is a short variant where the footage from the two clay logo parts are replaced with the text "IN ONE" in black forming via a wave effect over a blood red background, followed by a shot of an ear.

Technique: Live-action footage.

Audio: A deep note with faint machine-like screeches followed by a short string instrument tune, which is followed by a mixture of various sounds including reversed music, faint screaming and reversed laughing, ending with another short string tune.

Audio Variant: The music in the short version is shortened and doesn't have any incomprehensible sound effects.

Kiss (1996-1998)

Videos

Visuals: In a forest setting, in a typical Disney animation art style, Cinderella can be seen giving smooches to animals. Once Cinderella gave a kiss to the frog, she was grotesquely transformed into the MTV logo off screen. The frog was shocked, while the squirrels were shocked and crying, while she coughed up some weird slime to form the wordmark.

Technique: 2D animation.

Audio: Unknown

Trivia: It is most likely parodying Disney princess stories, while also parodying an old folk tale The Frog Prince.

Art Museum (1997-1999)

Videos

Visuals: In a museum, a security guard stands in the entrance of the exhibition as he pulls out a remote control to turn them on, displaying all the artworks like a TV. The guard then whistles for the chair, which drags itself, grabs the guard and drags him onto the same position where the chair was. The small artwork of a barely naked woman then clings itself onto another artwork, which interrupts the signal of the artwork the woman was clinging onto. This prompts the guard to try to fix it, but to no avail, and he comes over to the small painting of the woman, where he places it back on where it was by himself. The painting starts moving and running on the walls, to which the guard chases the painting around the whole exhibition. The painting then slides onto the floor, causing the guard to slip and hit his head on the wall. Despite being in pain, the guard chases the painting after it runs again, and the chair then catches the guard, chasing the painting with him. The painting is now at a higher level, where the guard stands up and goes towards it. He jumps and hovers, attempting to grab the painting until he succeeds, and goes back to the ground before turning around and slamming the painting on the wall, which causes the other artworks on display to fall to the ground. Overwhelmed, the guard snaps as he hits himself with a skateboard, has a complete psychological meltdown, and runs out of the museum in desperation. The camera then shows the small painting itself, where the woman moves causing the signal of the painting to switch into the MTV logo.

Technique: A blend of stop-motion and 2D animation.

Audio: The sounds of the guard's footsteps and the chair dragging, as well as some sounds of whistles coming from both the guard, and the woman in the painting before she escapes.

Flying Daddy (1997-1999)

Videos

Visuals: The screen fades in to a scene of a typical bedroom, where we see a lump writing under the bedsheets. A kid comes running into the room, and tugging on the sheets, his sister and their mother walk in as well. They tear off the sheets, revealing a bug-like monster, which is gushing blood. The kids and the mother scream in terror. The bug gorily morphs itself into the MTV logo. A man with bug-like wings and antenna, possibly the father of the family reborn as someone half-insect, then bursts out of the larva, picks up a briefcase, and flies out the window by breaking the glass, likely going to work. Other bug-dad-businessmen fly off with him.

Technique: 2D animation by Keito Kurosaka.

Audio: The sounds of what goes on in the logo, with the kid saying "Papa.", as well the kids screaming.

Legacy: This ID was infamous for how gross it is.

FrankenSkippy (1997-2000)

Videos

Visuals: The screen pans out of a tombstone in a graveyard at night. FrankenSkippy, a monster with a wolf's tail, jumps out and mutters "FrankenSkippy, FrankenSkippy" in a voice not unlike Frankenstein. FrankenSkippy then pulls his heart (shaped like an M) out. Some brief close-up shots of his head and heart are shown before the logo cuts back to the original camera position. FrankenSkippy then says "FrankenSkippy's coming..for..YOOOOOU!" He slaps his tail at the screen, which then cuts to an X-ray of his heart before he pulled it out, this time with "TV" bones hanging in front of it. The heart and bones thus form the "MTV" logo. The words "MUSIC TELEVISION" can also be seen at the bottom of the X-ray. The logo then cuts to FrankenSkippy again, who this time has a chainsaw. He uses the chainsaw to cut the screen in half, which then cuts back to the X-ray again. A flower can be seen growing on the "TV" bones.

Technique: CGI produced by Conja, directed by Lars Magnus Holmgren.

Audio: Some traditional horror music and sound effects (beating hearts, squishy sounds, etc.), with FrankenSkippy's muttering throughout. The horror music stops to some sound effects of TV static and a chainsaw, which plays as FrankenSkippy cuts the screen with his chainsaw. A mellow violin tune starts just before FrankenSkippy cuts the screen.

Availability: Produced for the Australian MTV channel.

Legacy: The "horror movie monster" theme of the ID unsettled many viewers at the time. This ident has also earned the nickname FrankenSkippy for the director Lars Magnus Holmgren himself.

Food for Thought (1997-2000)

Videos

Visuals: In outer space, there is an extreme close-up of a creature with two pairs of legs (one of the pairs is upside down) with an eye. Then it cuts to a close-up of another creature with lips in the center, sucking on a white, blue, and black striped straw. The camera zooms out to reveal the previous creature and it is depicted with two eyes. Both creatures are standing on a steel platform with eyeballs and bones on the ground. Off in the distance, we can see fossils on circular platforms, straws blowing on jacks, and Earth. The leg creature proceeds to suck on its fellow creatures' skin which is torn apart to reveal the rib cage bone inside, which includes an "M"-shaped heart (similar to the one from the "FrankenSkippy" ID). It also sips up a femur bone on the floor, which cuts to a close-up of the straw blowing in the bone. After the creature finishes sipping up the remaining femur bones on the floor, the screen cuts to a close-up of the heart getting sucked into the straw. Once the eyeball creature is fully finished sucking, it drops the straw on the ground and opens its lips to reveal the heart and bones, which are arranged to form the MTV logo (similar to the "FrankenSkippy" ID). The camera zooms in on the logo contained within. The words "MUSIC TELEVISION" flickers in red and white underneath. Like the "FrankenSkippy" ID, a pink flower is growing on the "TV" bones. The ID ends with a "TV-turning off" effect.

Technique: CGI produced by Conja, directed by Lars Magnus Holmgren.

Audio: A slightly spooky bass synth theme with chimes and whirring throughout along with some slurping from the straw and the TV static from the transitions. In addition, the creature belches when it reveals the logo along with beeping when "MUSIC TELEVISION" is flickering.

Availability: Produced for the Australian MTV channel.

Laughing Moon (1997-1999)

Videos

Visuals: The ident begins with a titlecard that says 'LAUGHING MOON'. A hand then pulls out and takes the titlecard away as we see a train track at the night with the moon on the background. Suddenly, there's a man running on the train tracks, before stopping, and looking at what seemed to be like a barricade made up of just brick wall. The man then knocks onto the barricade, before going onto the opposite side only to find that there is also a barricade stopping him as well, also looking up. The man then ran back onto the barricade he just encountered, as he then slammed his head on the wall. As he was on the ground, he looked up and saw a train already oncoming in front of him, but luckily dodged it, as the man is now out of the train track. The man then stared at the environment around him, and seemed to be terrified, as he gets back on the train tracks, once again, knocking on the barricade. The scene then cuts to the moon laughing at the man, before out of nowhere, the MTV logo squashed the moon.

Blowfly Heaven (1998-2000)

Videos

Visuals: There is a blowfly at the start, and then a wooden barrier appears in front of it. The barrier reads "Outback Bunny." The screen then zooms out to see a swarm of blowflies and a bagged-up ear creature. (possibly the bunny) A blowfly closes up on us and bites in front of the screen before going back into the swarm. Two blowflies lift up a bag which shows the MTV logo made of filth in which a caterpillar is crawling on. Just like the "FrankenSkippy" ID and the "Food for Thought" ID, a blue flower can be seen on the top-right of the logo.

Trivia: At the start of the ident, at the very top reads 'LARS WAS HERE 1998'.

Thank You (2003-mid/late 2000s)

Visuals: There is a couple walking past a rainbow-colored wall displaying airport signs. A young man walks into the frame and stops to read the map on the wall, followed by a woman carrying a bag. The camera shows the man and woman walking in opposite directions in slow motion before cutting to the woman's bag, which has the words "Thank You" in rainbow colors (a la the generic "Thank You, Have a Nice Day" bag). After she walks away, the words "Music Television" and a copyright notice appear in white, followed by the MTV logo appearing in between both.

Technique: Live-action footage directed by Asaaf Dov Cohen of Co-Op and Mark Owens.

Primetime Players (2003-mid/late 2000s)

Videos

Visuals: On a yellow background, there is a man attempting to solve a Rubik's cube. Once he solves it, the camera cuts to the yellow side of the cube before cutting to a yellow background with smaller black and yellow squares. Then it cuts to a black background, where the text "Primetime Players" appears in yellow with a copyright notice below it in white, followed by the MTV logo appearing sandwiched in between them, also in white.

Then the toy flashes its red and blue lights, and the hand presses said buttons. The toy flashes its red, blue and green lights, and the hand again presses said buttons. Finally, the Simon toy flashes all of its lights in a more complete sequence, followed by the hand completing the sequence. The camera briefly cuts to a close up of the green button before cutting to a black background with the text "Beat Seekers" in green and a copyright notice in white below it. The MTV logo, also in white, appears in between the two.

Technique: Live-action footage directed by Asaaf Dov Cohen of Co-Op and Mark Owens.

Audio: An electro beat that starts and stops in time with the buttons at first before playing normally, with a gong when the "Beat Seekers" text appears.

Availability: Usually appeared during the show of the same name.

Video Clash (2003-mid/late 2000s)

Videos

Visuals: There is a man in a suit pushing a cart past an aisle of colored boxes as another man walks into the frame (the woman with the bag from the "Thank You" bumper can also be seen in the background). The camera pans over the shelf that the man is standing in front of before stopping at one of the purple boxes, which the man picks up. The camera briefly cuts back to the previous shot before cutting to a series of diagonal purple stripes on a black background, followed by a series of black and purple squares (in the same manner as the "Primetime Players" bumper). The screen then cuts to a black background with the text "Video Clash" in purple and a copyright notice in white below it. The MTV logo, also in white, appears sandwiched between both of them.

Technique: Live-action footage directed by Asaaf Dov Cohen of Co-Op and Mark Owens.

Audio: A laid back synth funk tune somewhat similar to the one heard in the "Thank You" bumper.
