Background

The NPS (Nederlandse Programma Stichting) was a Dutch public broadcaster, founded on April 28, 1994. On September 1, 2010, the NPS merged with Teleac and RVU to form the NTR. It was the only A-broadcaster without members and without a program magazine. From 1995 to 2006, the NPS broadcast exclusively on Nederland 3 and 3FM, and from 2006 until the merger in 2010 mainly on Nederland 2.

1st ID (1994-1997)

Visuals: Over a field of white objects, projections of a red arc and a blue dot (representing an eye), as well as the text "nps" spaced out, all made in a hand-brushed fashion, are seen scrolling across the field as overlays. When the logo moves to the center of the screen, it fades to a print version of the logo on a white background, placed inside of a grey brushstroke square. 5 different surface variants have been created, with each having different animations:

  • A causeway made of cubes seen at a diagonal angle, as the arc scrolls down from the top of the cubes and the dot scrolls in from the side. The "n" fades in first before the "ps" appear one-by-one.
  • A ribbed mattress-like surface seen at an right angle, the logo scrolling across it to the left. It then fades to the whole logo (with text) sliding across before slowing down and eventually stopping.
  • A pile of wooden blocks as the logo scrolls down them and the camera zooms out, tilting and turning before eventually resting in place. Uniquely, this is the only one where the logo isn't shown in its usual colors, but actually is showing a yellow surface with the blocks in red, blue, yellow, and green colors.
  • A few layers of perforated metal sheets seen at a incline angle, with the arc and dot scrolling across it at delayed speeds. The text is also seen scrolling up to meet with them in the center.
  • A large pile of round stones seen at a lower angle to the left, with the arc and dot scrolling down it and meeting with the text below. The dot also scrolls over the arc while doing so.

Trivia: The logo was created by Will Bakker, who designed it to have a more "human feel" to it and to be as simplistic as possible.

Variants:

  • Sometimes after the logo forms, the objects then appear chroma-keyed within the square, the lighting rotating around the objects over time. This is usually accompanied by an announcer, though a softer, slower mix of the tune would also play over it.
  • On promos leading up to its launch, the logo took up most of the screen was formed by brush stroke motions, with the square made of 4 strokes alone.
  • A variant of the stone version has 3 columns of NPS logos scrolling across them, with the left and right scrolling down and the middle scrolling up.
  • At the end of their broadcast, the logo effectively animates in reverse. The logo first appears as the final result before it fades back to the cubes, eventually scrolling off-screen as the camera zooms onto the cubes.

Technique: A mix of live-action and CGI by Will Bakker.

Audio: An soft instrumental theme, ending with a short 5-note flourish. The instruments, tone, and melody depend on the 5 idents. Composed by Bernhard Joosten.

2nd ID (1997-1999)

Visuals: The screen pans against a wave of a stylized picture. From the picture, there is the NPS logo cutout of it, within a stylized background. As the screen settles forwards, the wave decreases and the picture brightens, and the logo's colors are revealed.

Technique: CGI by Will Bakker.

Audio: An instrumental theme, concluding with three notes. Composed by Bernhard Joosten.

3rd ID (1999-2008)

Visuals: Over the black background is the word "nps" zooming out inside the paint-drawn red square, but it reveals to be a arc which also zooms out inside the blue square. Then, the background is revealing the dot to zooming out for showing the logo in the grey square.

Technique: 2D animation.

Audio: A synth version of the three-note jingle from the previous ID, or the closing theme.

Availability: This was rarely seen on other NPS programs, such as De Flat van Ali B and Vals plat.

4th ID (2008-2010)

Visuals: Against a white background, there is a 7x7 group of circles with "nps" cut out of it, with footages on each of them. Movements may vary depending on each ident.

Technique: Computer animation by KesselsKrammer.

Audio: A short synth theme. Composed by 310k.
