Background

ORF 2 is the second channel from the Austrian public broadcaster ORF.

1st ID (1979-1987)

Visuals: On a black background, there is a blue segmented number 2 on the right side of the screen.

Variant: Starting in 1984, the 2 has fewer segments and has a drop shadow behind it.

Technique: A still, computerized graphic.

Audio: None.

2nd ID (1987-1990)


Visuals: On a blue background, three blue shapes fly onto the right side of the screen and create the segmented 2 from before. The ORF logo of the time fades in in the top corner.

Technique: 3D computer animation.

Audio: A majestic fanfare (different from the one used by ORF 1).

3rd ID (1990-October 26, 1992)


Visuals: Same as before, but this time the background is black, the 2 is made of glass, and the ORF logo is updated to have the eye symbol.

Technique: Same as before, but with glass effects.

Audio: Same as before.

4th ID (October 26, 1992-October 5, 2000)


Visuals: Over a blue background is shadows of the ORF eye symbol and the number 2 rotating. A rectangle with "ORF 2" fades in, with "2" in a yellow box.

Trivia: This logo was designed by English album cover artist Neville Brody.

Technique: 2D computer animation.

Audio: An abridged version of the Zeit im Bild theme.

5th ID (Cube) (October 5, 2000-2007)


Visuals: There is a red cube with the yellow number 2 inside it, which turns away from the camera and aligns itself in the center in front of some footage split in four sections, with part of the ORF eye logo visible on the left side of the screen. After a while, the animation of the 2 reverses, turning towards the camera.

Variants: From August 16, 2005 onwards, the 2 was colored white.

Technique: A mix of both CGI and live-action.

Audio: A proud orchestral fanfare with a five-note leitmotif. May use different music, but with the same five notes.

6th ID (Cube) (2007-January 9, 2012)


Visuals: There is a white stripe going horizontally from the left across the screen as a cream background fades in. The cube from before settles into its usual spot in the center.

Variants: For the break bumper, the cube, equipped with light rays, spins and becomes transparent. The light ray on the right turns a solid red color with the word "W e r b u n g".

Technique: Same as before, with some tweaks.

Audio: A calm piano tune with the same five-note leitmotif from before.

7th ID (January 9, 2012-)


Visuals: On a red background split in half is the ORF logo on the left coming up, while a white box with the number 2 comes down on the right. They wobble a bit before settling into place.

  • 2012-2018: On a half-white half-red background split in the middle, there are two lookalikes of the same person interacting with each other. The ORF 2 logo forms via a similar animation as the generic ident.
