Background
RCN Television (short for Radio Cadena Nacional) is a private TV channel and production company, and the second largest channel in Colombia. RCN started out as a programadora (a Colombian television production and distribution company) in 1967. The company then became a network by acquiring one of the two licenses from the Colombian government (the other being Caracol Televisión) and launched in 1998. The company is also known for making Yo soy Betty, la fea, one of the most popular telenovelas from Latin America and one of the few to be adapted into a US television show (Ugly Betty).
1st ID (1979-1986)
Visuals: On a black/red gradient a sphere zooms out to the right as a red light spins around it. The light then splits in three as they form the letters of the word "RCN". Then the lights fade out. A light spark then wipes in "TELEVISION" below "RCN".
Technique: Motion-controlled animation.
Audio: A descending/ascending synth sounder, followed by a bell theme and the announcer.
2nd ID (1986-1988)
Visuals: On a black background various multicolored line segments zoom out and form the word "RCN", and then the colors of the word wipe to orange. The logo then slightly zooms in, moving up a bit, and the word "TELEVISION" flashes in below. The logo shines.
Technique: 2D animation.
Audio: Same as before, as well as a different announcer.
3rd ID (1988-1998)
Visuals: The screen zooms out from blue/yellow lines, as a metallic sphere moves in at the left. The lines are revealed on the sphere, resulting to be a figure of a lightning bolt with the colors of the Colombian flag. The figure of the lightning bolt then places itself in front of the sphere as the camera rotates and places. "RCN", stylized like before, shoots in and places next to the figure.
Variants:
- From 1988 to 1991, the metallic sphere fades out when the word shoots in.
- A variant of the same version exists, but with "RCN" in 3D.
- From 1991 to 1998, the metallic sphere doesn't fade out, resulting in a freeze frame, the "RCN" is seen with a different 3D style and "TELEVISION" (with a shadow behind) fades in below "RCN".
Technique: CGI.
Audio:
- An upbeat synthesized theme with a zap sound at the beginning, and the announcer.
- The logo's last years used a different synth theme.
