Background

World Eiga Co., Ltd. (ワールド映画株式会社) was a Japanese film production and distribution company primarily active from the mid-1960s to the mid-1980s. Founded in the early 1960s, the company initially focused on distributing foreign films but quickly established a reputation for producing adult films, particularly pink films (softcore films), during the 1960s and early 1970s. Notable directors associated with World Film during this period include Yoshiji Yamashita, Toshiro Okuwaki, and Akio Kageyama.[1]

While the company's exact founding date remains unclear, its earliest recorded activity was the distribution of the Soviet film The Path of War in 1965. By the mid-1970s, World Film had shifted its focus to distributing mainstream foreign films, such as Italian and American productions. However, its influence on the Japanese pink film industry during the 1960s and early 1970s remains significant, and its films continue to be studied and re-evaluated by film scholars and enthusiasts. As of 2012, the company's current status is unknown, and its production activities appear to have ceased in the late 1980s.
