Background

Belo Corporation is a media company based in Dallas, Texas. They specialized in the operation of various news broadcasting stations across 10 states. They were acquired by Gannett Co. in late 2013.

1st Logo (1999-2002, 2003-2011)

Logo: We see a blue tinted shot of the American flag waving in the background. On the right side is a rotating shot of a satellite dish (one of those big dishes seen near the front or side of a news station building). As the satellite dish fades from view, the "O" in "BELO" starts to shine. Underneath the name is a byline that says "[News station's name] is a BELO SUBSIDIARY".

Variant: The background might have a teal shade.

Technique: Unknown.

Music/Sounds: A soothing synth drone with a cymbal stinger.

Availability: Seen at the end of Belo station's newscasts. Starting in 2003, it was used in tandem with the next logo until 2011.

2nd Logo (2002-2011)

Logo: We are showing various images relating to news journalism (though a shot of a little girl and a female firefighter are shown in the montage as well). The shot concludes with the same BELO setup from the first logo, random network mentioned as a subsidiary and the New York Stock Exchange symbol mentioned below that.

Variants:

  • A alternate version is also used for widescreen with a shot of family hand in hand and a dad holding a little girl in the montage.
  • A short version is exists, with the same BELO setup from the first logo, random network mentioned as a subsidiary and the New York Stock Exchange symbol mentioned below.
  • On the sign-on and sign-off sequences for WHAS in Louisville in 2007, it showing a female firefighter, then the same BELO setup from the first logo, the station mentioned as a subsidiary and the New York Stock Exchange symbol mentioned below are shown.
  • The WVEC variant has a on-screen station identification on the bottom.
  • There is another version with the URL appears on the bottom.

Technique: The montage of moving images (including the moving satellite dish from the first logo) and the shining "O".

Music/Sounds: A piano fanfare that has an upbeat 4-note flourish. There is also a lengthy voiceover explaining why said BELO-owned network is important to the community and it says "[station] is part of Belo. From coast to coast, Belo media companies share the high standards of journalism and community service. Listed on the New York Stock Exchange as BLC.".

Music/Sound Variants:

  • There is a lengthy theme without the voiceover, used only on WCNC.
  • The short variant uses the music from the first logo.
  • The 2007 sign-on and sign-off sequences for WHAS in Louisville has the theme by Frank Gari (which is used on the newscasts), with the voiceover (voiced by John Young) saying "licensed to Belo Kentucky, a subsidiary of A.H. Belo Corporation".

Availability: Seen at the end of every Belo station newscasts during that period.
