Background

The Asahi Broadcasting Corporation entered television on March 1, 1959, with the purchase of independent station OTV (Osaka Television). On December of that year, the station started carrying TBS programs and two years later, became a charter station of their Japan News Network (JNN). In 1975, ABC switched to ANN and began carrying NET programs. In 2018, ABC restructured as a holding company and because of this, the ABC television license was taken over by Asahi Television Broadcasting Corporation and its callsign was renamed.


JONR-TV/DTV (Asahi Broadcasting Corporation/ABC Television)

1st ID (Startup, 1967-March 31, 1989)


Visuals: There is a shot of a futuristic-era Osaka as it zooms out. After that, the 1953 ABC symbol, consisting of the words "ABC" in a caligraphy-style font zooms in before the camera fades into multiple shots of the city as the station information plays out. After that, a giant number "6" appears as it zooms out before the camera pans into the shot of Osaka from earlier. The number "6" fades out before the callsign at that time, "JONR-TV" appears as the letters form one by one before fading to black.

Variant: Starting on March 21, 1979, the logo fades to a still image of the opening shot of the animation with the relay channel information being displayed.

Technique: Traditional cel animation.

Audio: The 1956 OTV theme.

Audio Variant: Around 1979, the OTV theme received a new arrangement due to the introduction of sound multiplex broadcasts. After that, a synth theme with some birds chirping was played during the relay channel information section.

2nd ID (Closedown, December 1973-March 31, 1989)


Visuals:

Technique: Traditional cel animation.

Audio: A gentle twilight theme.

3rd ID (April 1, 1989-November 30, 2001)


Visuals:

  • Opening (used until 1990): There is a map of Osaka as it zooms in to reveal ABC's headquarters before fading to another shot of it. After that, the callsigns from that time, "JONR-TV" appear before fading into live action shots of Osaka during daytime while the station information appears. After that, a golden giant number 6 appears spinning as it locks in place with the 1989 ABC wordmark, consisting of the words "ABC" in bold with some outlines on the right on the bottom while a red swoosh appears.
  • Closing: There is a shot of Osaka as it zooms in place before fading to a shot of ABC's headquarters while the callsign "JONR-TV" appears before the camera fades to some shots of Osaka during sunset. After that, the ABC logo animation from the opening plays before fading to black.

Technique: A mix of live-action footage and CGI.

Audio:

  • Startup: The 1979 arrangement of the OTV theme.
  • Closedown: The 1973 ABC closedown theme.

Technique: A mix of CGI with live-action footage.

Audio: "Hotaru" performed by Spitz accompanied with some announcers.

7th ID (Analog, December 1, 2001-July 24, 2011)


Visuals:

  • Startup: On a starry sky, there is the "JONR-TV" callsign as it flies by before the camera moves to the left to reveal another "JONR-TV" callsign and Kyukyu, a cube with the letters "ABC" in yellow as he orbits through space. After that, Kyukyu lands on the moon before the background fades to white. After that, the words "Info designing" (ABC's slogan at that time appears) before Kyukyu opens his box doors to reveal the channel's name
  • Closedown (used until 2003): On a black background with a spotlight Kyukyu can bee seen flying down. After spinning for a bit, he opens his doors to reveal the letters "ABC" as he takes a bow. After that, a iris out appears before the circle fades fully to reveal the "JONR-TV" callsign in red.

Technique: CGI.

Audio:

  • Startup: Some space-like sounds, accompanied with some robotic voices saying "JONR-TV" and a soloist singing "Info designing, ABC".
  • Closedown: A gentle violin theme with some xylophone notes.

8th ID (Digital, December 1, 2003-March 31, 2018)


Visuals:

Variant: Around 2015, the logo was changed from the "Info designing, ABC" logo to the 2008 ABC symbol with the number 6 atop of it. Some shots were also changed. This was due to ABC retiring Kyukyu as its mascot in favor of Abciee.

Technique: A mix of live-action footage with a superimposed digital graphic.

Audio: A gentle upbeat theme, known as "Afternoon", performed by Yukiko Nakamura.
