Background

Phoenix Entertainment Group was a television production company founded in July 1985 by Gerald W. Abrams, the father of J.J. Abrams. When Phoenix Entertainment was purchased by Hearst Entertainment in 1989, it was merged with King Features' movie division, reincorporating it as King Phoenix Entertainment, until it was folded into Hearst in 1990.

(May 18, 1986-May 22, 1990)

Logo: On a black background, a orange light glows at the bottom-left of screen. From the glow, a white-orange streak swoops up and curves around clockwise forming a giant cursive "P". The words "PHOENIX ENTERTAINMENT GROUP" appear on the bottom of the "P" in a condensed font.

Trivia: The logo was designed by Sandy Dvore, who is also known for designing the titles to The Partridge Family and The Young and the Restless.

Variant: A warp-speed variant exists that has the animation sped-up.

Later Variant: From 1989-1990, the text is changed to "KING PHOENIX ENTERTAINMENT". There is an orange crown next to the word "KING". Also, the cursive "P" is in a pinkish color and there's an orange tip on the cursive "P" until it disappears as "KING PHOENIX ENTERTAINMENT" and the orange crown appears in.

FX/SFX: The glow, and the curve swooshing.

Music/Sounds: Synth beeps with a whoosh when the "P" forms and ending with a synthesized fade out. The King Phoenix variant has a "ding" sound added to the music as the company name appears.

Music/Sounds Variant: Sometimes, the ending theme would play over the logo, or none.

Availability:

  • Appears on a few TV movies, usually followed by the Hearst Entertainment logo.
  • It recently appeared on the movie A Hobo's Christmas when WGN America last ran it.
  • The King Phoenix variant was seen on the 1990 TV movies Challenger and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.
  • It's also seen on the 1986 TV movie Brotherhood of Justice as well.

Legacy: If you watch closely on the King Phoenix variation, the streak appears above the orange light rather than from it.
