Nippon Educational Television

Background

Nippon Educational Television (NET) was founded on November 1, 1957 and began applying for the Kanto region channel 10 license that same year. The station signed on February 1, 1959 as the region's third major commercial television station, albeit airing educational programming, hence the name. In December 1960, the station submitted a report to the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications designating animation as "for children's emotional education," foreign films and foreign drama television shows as "introduction of foreign culture," and period drama television shows as "educational programs" and "culture programs" under the guise of "historical education," and changed its external name from "Nippon Educational Television" to "NET Television", effectively making it a de-facto general entertainment station. In 1974, NET transitioned to a full-time commercial channel as NET Television and opened the All-Nippon News Network (ANN) to carry its programs nationwide. The following year, Nikkei transferred their shares in NET to the Asahi Shimbun, leading to Osaka JNN/TBS affiliate ABC switching to ANN and began broadcasting NET programs. In 1977, NET rebranded to TV Asahi.

Visuals: On a black background, there are the words "10チャンネル" as it zooms out to the right. Then, a tube appears, with the NET wordmark in the middle. The tube later forms into a bolt as the NET symbol forms itself. Then, the word "誕生!" appears before fading out.

Audio: A triumphant theme.

Availability: Only seen as a cinema trailer prior to NET's launch in 1959.

Audio: The opening or ending theme of the show.

Availability: First seen on NET's first production Suidō kanbi gasu mikomi. However, footage from that show has yet to be found.
