Background

Phoenix Entertainment Group was a television production company founded in July 1985 by Gerald W. Abrams, the father of J.J. Abrams, and Gerard Isenberg, as a merger of the two companies, Abrams' Cypress Point Productions and Isenberg's The Jozak Company. The company had a distribution deal with King Features Entertainment, which had a long and good relationship. In February 1989, the company was sold to The Hearst Corporation, who owned distribution affiliate King Features Entertainment, and renamed it to King Phoenix Entertainment.

Visuals: On a black background, an orange light glows at the bottom-left of screen. From the glow, a white-orange streak swoops up and curves around clockwise forming a giant cursive "P" with a orange tip on the bottom. The company name (spaced-out and in all caps) appears on the bottom of the "P" in a condensed font.

  • A still version of the logo also exists, which appears on the unsold pilot The Ghost Writer.
  • On an August 28, 1993 LWT airing of the 1988 TV movie A Father's Revenge, this logo fades into the 1989 An LWT Presentation for ITV endcap.

Technique: Cel animation.

Audio: Synthesized beeps with a whoosh when the "P" forms and ending with a synthesized fade out. Composed by Jerry Goldsmith.

Audio Variants:

  • On some TV movies such as The Brotherhood of Justice and Goddess of Love, an electronic "ding" sound is added to the music as the company name appears.
  • Sometimes, the ending theme would play over the logo, or none.

Availability:

  • Seen on a few TV movies, usually followed by either the King Features Entertainment or Hearst Entertainment logo.
  • It was also seen on the movie A Hobo's Christmas when WGN America last ran it.
  • It is also seen on the 1986 TV movie Brotherhood of Justice, and the short-lived series A Fine Romance.
