Background

This is the production label of S4C.



1st Logo (November 1, 1982-1987)

Visuals: It is an in-credit logo consisting of just "S4C" within their 1982 logo.

Variants:

  • Sometimes, the logo is white.
  • On a few programmes, the full version of the logo is shown which includes "WALE" and "YMRU" to the left and right of the logo respectively. Plus, the channel's full name is displayed underneath.
  • On Madam Wen Nadolig, the logo is underlined.
  • On Yr Hwntw Mawr, it is shown within Nant's logo, specifically within both the in-credit disclaimer and copyright notice.
  • On Y Byd ar Bedwar, the channel's full name is added below and also shares the screen with the 1970 HTV Cymru logo.
  • On Crwydro'r Cledrau, the logo is small.
  • Bequest to a Nation it is shown on the same row as the Celtic Films logo.

Audio: The ending theme of the programme.

Availability:

  • It can be seen on their earliest programmes, many of which are hard to find on home media.
  • These include early episodes of Cefn Gwlad and Y Byd ar Bedwar, Madam Wen Nadolig, Bequest to a Nation, Crwydro'r Cledrau, among others.
  • The full logo variant was so far only seen on SuperTed.

2nd Logo (1987-1995)

Visuals: Like the previous logo, it is an in-credit version of the 1987 logo, consisting of the channel name in blue, green, and red.

Variants:

  • Sometimes, the logo is white.
  • On Fireman Sam, the logo appears within the 1987 Bumper Films logo and also its in-credit disclaimers. Plus, it also has a black stroke.
    • Original English prints of said series feature the 1982 logo in blue.
    • On series 4, the logo loses its outline and also has more vibrant colors.
  • On Jeux sans frontieres, the logo is within a white box with a black outline and shadow.
  • On Angry Earth, the letters are more spread out.
  • On Funnybones, this logo shares the screen with the 1988 BBC Enterprises logo.
  • On Swig o Bacardi Eisteddfod Aberystwyth, this logo appears with the 1987 HTV Cymru logo.
  • On Cymru Newydd, this logo shares the screen with the 1982 Channel 4, 1988 BBC Cymru and the 1993 HTV logos.
  • On Cefin Gwlard, this logo appears with the 1993 HTV logo.

Audio: The ending theme of the programme.

Audio Variants:

  • On the Fireman Sam special "Snow Business", a wind-like sound is heard.
  • On Joshua Jones, the synthesized whoosh from the end of the original Fireman Sam theme tune is heard, but sounds noticeably faster.

Availability:

  • Appears on original and VHS prints of Fireman Sam as well as episodes of Cefin Gwlard from this timeframe, Hedd Wyn, among others.
  • It was also seen at the end of a few TV movies such as Angry Earth.
  • It also appears on Joshua Jones as well.

3rd Logo (1995-2008)

Visuals: This is another in-credit logo where it displays the 1995 logo, consisting of "S4C" in white and a tilde sticking out of the "C".

Variants:

  • A red version of this logo exists.
  • Some programmes feature the logo in black.
  • Sometimes, this logo also shares the screen with other logos.
  • On remastered prints of Fireman Sam, the 1995 logo is featured three times: next to Bumper Films' name, within the copyright notice, and on the bottom left section of the screen and also shares the screen with the 2000 HIT Entertainment logo which appears on the bottom right of the screen.
  • On India Reborn, the logo has a shadow.
  • On Life on the Hedge, this logo shares the screen with the 1996 Scottish Television, the 1995 RTE and the Performance Films logos.

Audio: The ending theme of the programme.

Audio Variant: On the remastered prints of the Fireman Sam special "Snow Business", a wind-like sound is heard.

Availability:

  • One of the earliest programmes to use this logo include Pobl y Chyff, Rownd a Rownd, and episodes of Y Byd ar Bedwar and Cefn Gwlad from this period.
  • It has also appeared on remastered prints of Fireman Sam using the red variant.
  • Said version can also be found on Sir Gawain and the Knight, Heaven on Earth, among others.
  • Some of these programmes were found on streaming sites like IMDB TV and have this logo intact.

4th Logo (2007-2014)

Visuals: On a white background is the 2007 logo on the bottom left, consistng of "S4/C" in a rounded font. Next to it is the copyright info containing a co-producer's name. On top of it is said producer's logo with "Cynhyrchiad" and "Ar" on top and underneath it.

Variants:

  • An in-credit version consists of the logo in white.
  • Sometimes, this logo also shares the screen with the other logos.

Technique: None. [possible misuse]

Audio: The ending theme of the programme.

Availability: Like the previous logos, episodes of Cefn Gwlad from this period contain this logo as well as Cyngerdd Elin Fflur, Gerallt, and Darwin The Welshman and the Conspiracy.

5th Logo (2014-)

Visuals: There is the channel name in turquoise against a white box with a slanted right side. The other section of the screen is the same color as the channel's logo and contains a co-producer's logo, placing "Cynhyrchiad" on the top left and a copyright notice on the bottom.

Variants:

  • An in-credit version exists where the logo resembles the normal print logo.
    • No Body Recovered uses an alternate in-credit logo where "Original" in white and within a dark teal box is sticking out the logo.
  • On some programmes that has two logos placed on the right side, "ar gyfer" is added in between.
  • On Rygbi Pawb, the copyright symbol is slightly thinner.

Audio: The ending theme of the programme.

Availability:

  • It can be found on a variety of programmes ranging from scripted programmes to live sports events, the latter of which include Rygbi Pawb and Indigo Prem.
  • A lot of these programmes are easy to find on the network's YouTube channel and website as well as international streaming sites like SBS on Demand and TV airings.
  • The in-credit variant was used on programmes where they are a distributor.
  • They include No Body Discovered, Hinterland, Tide, and Aberfan: The Fight for Justice.

6th Logo (February 23-March 29, 2020?)


Visuals: On a light teal background sits the 2014 S4C logo with "drama" and "original" to the top left and bottom right of it respectively. The camera starts on the bottom right section of the logo before moving to the center. Simultaneously, a faint spotlight moves from the right on top of the logo.

Technique: CGI.

Audio: A low note string sting with a glimmer sound.

Availability: Seen at the beginning of drama programmes such as series 2 of Bang.
