TV2 (Malaysia) (1990-2006)

From the Audiovisual Identity Database, the motion graphics museum

Background

On February 1, 1990, RTM2 was renamed to TV2. It would later air more variety and informative shows starting August 1, 2004.

1st ID (February 2, 1990-July 31, 2004)

Visuals: Against a darker version of the same space background from the 1987 RTM1 logo, the RTM logo fly in the same way as in the TV1 logo. The TV2 logo from the time (same as TV1's logo, but with the 1 replaced with 2) in gold reveals itself and settles beneath the RTM logo. It then zooms towards the camera and fits the screen before shrinking to its usual position. The logo then moves to the center of the screen and glows before moving back to its usual position.

Technique: CGI.

Audio: A xylophone tune followed by a trumpet fanfare. This is basically the same as TV1's ident from the time.

2nd ID (1993?-1998?)

Visuals: Against a space background, there are colorful filmstrips going through a glass-structured outlined square. Multiple objects fly over the filmstrips and go through the square before fading away, which consist of a beam (two quaver notes joined together) in gold, the Olympics logo, a magenta and green cone, a torch, an eighth note, a magenta-colored pyramid, a toy block, a G clef, a pencil, and a structure of an atom. The sequence then fades into a glass structure of the TV2 logo from the time, which eventually turns gold, with the inside also being filled. The logo then faces the screen, and gold serif text reading SALURAN EMAS (GOLD CHANNEL) fades in below. The logo and the slogan then shine.

Variant: There's a variant from mid-1996 used in conjunction with the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games. The ident starts off inside a tree, and the screen passes by multiple leaves until four yellow butterfly eggs are seen. One of them hatches, and a baby caterpillar comes out of it and crawls around the leaf. The sequence then fades to a scene where the caterpillar has fully grown. It crawls to the underside of a branch and hangs itself in an upside down J-shape, before turning into a chrysalis. The chrysalis then breaks open, and a golden butterfly comes out of it and opens its wings. It then flies towards the sky, which has a rainbow. Multiple more differently-colored butterflies fly towards the sky as well. The TV2 logo from the time in gold with "GO FOR GOLD" above it and "THE GOLDEN CHANNEL" under it, with both texts had the same gold color. Both the logo and the texts shine for a brief time before the footage freezes.

Technique: CGI.

Audio: A bombastic synth fanfare that decreases in pitch, ending with the channel's four-note jingle from the time, along with an additional note to finish off the music.

Audio Variant: For the "Go for Gold" variant, it's said to have used a music track from De Wolfe Music Library, which is currently unidentified.

3rd ID (1998?-July 31, 2004)

Visuals: On a black background with an orange light at the left, there is golden text reading "THE" as it zooms away and the letters separate. The light at the right of the screen flashes, and a view of the TV2 logo from the time in gold is seen as the camera scrolls to the right. The screen then cuts to text reading "GOLDEN" with a bigger light at the left. After a bit more of the TV2 logo is seen, the screen cuts to text reading "CHANNEL" with a horizontal orange light behind it. Then, the TV2 logo is seen facing the camera and settling at the center of the screen between the two horizontal yellow lines. Underneath the logo, the channel's slogan from the time, "THE GOLDEN CHANNEL", wipes in via the light effect.

Variant:

  • At the bottom right corner of the screen, a bug denoting the programs are made in stereo would wipe in.
  • A slide commemorating the Lunar New Year from 2004 existed. There is a plant with mandarin oranges along with a monkey at the left, two lanterns at the top right, and two lights, all over a red background. There is also stacked text reading "Selamat Tahun Baru Cina 2004 (Happy Chinese New Year 2004)", with the text "daripada (from)" and the TV2 logo from the time under it. There are also several copies of the text "TAHUN BARU CINA" at the bottom of the screen.

Technique: The text, background, and star were all CGI. The "tv2" in the square was actually a model shot with a filtered lens. This logo was done by Malaysian animation studio Fat Lizard (now known as Vision Animation), who would later go on to produce shows such as SheZow and Transformers: Rescue Bots.

Audio: A delightful, if somewhat generic, synth tune with some twinkling noises made by Fat Lizard. In later years, this was replaced with a simpler synth trumpet theme produced in-house by RTM.

Audio Variant: The 2004 Lunar New Year slide uses a traditional Chinese tune.

4th ID (August 1, 2004-March 31, 2006)

Visuals: Against a brown-beige-orange background, red, orange, and yellow circles appear, along with a thin red ring surrounding them. A text in white reading "tv2" zooms from the camera to form the logo, which is similar to TV1's logo from the time, except that the rectangle is orange with a yellow tint at the top left, and the "1" is replaced with a "2". The background now has white and brown ribbons at the bottom, and the channel's slogan from the time, "Your Family Channel", appears underneath the logo.

Variant: A Ramadan slide from 2005 existed where the logo is under SELAMAT MENYAMBUT BULAN RAMADAN AL-MUBARAK daripada over a yellow moon symbol and part of a mosque over an orange-brown gradient background. There are also bars resembling an Islamic rug and stars around the background.

Technique: CGI for the normal ident and a still, digital graphic for the Ramadan 2005 variant.

Audio: Unknown.

Audio Variant: The Ramadan 2005 slide used a portion of Barefoot Girl by Ron Goodwin.

Availability: No footage of the main ident is available online, and the only proof of its existence are two TV-DX captures.
