Albert Sustainable Production Certification

From the Audiovisual Identity Database, the motion graphics museum

Background

Albert (stylized as albert) is an environmental organisation aiming to encourage the TV and film production industry to reduce waste and its carbon footprint. Initially, albert offered the industry a bespoke carbon calculator to measure the impact of its productions. The calculator allows a production to calculate its predicted carbon footprint from pre- to post-production. Productions can then go through the certification process, where they implement sustainable production techniques to reduce carbon emissions where possible, and offsets where it is not. Productions that successfully complete certification are awarded a 1, 2 or 3 star certificate and given use of the albert Sustainable Production logo on their credits. It opened as a project made at BBC in 1996, before being adapted by the BAFTA in 2011.

1st Logo (2014-2020)

Visuals: There is a silhouette of a footprint made out of paint, inside a white speech bubble with the following text "Albert sustainable production certification" in a stacked Museo font, placed next to it.

Variant: A variant exists with the footprint inside a TV, which is inside a circle with the text "Albert + Sustainable Production". This appeared on Gigglebiz, Swashbuckle and From There to Here.

Technique: A still, digital graphic.

Audio: The closing theme of the show/movie or silence.

Availability: Seen on various shows & documentaries that they produced such as Emmerdale, Coronation Street, EastEnders, Andy and the Band, Blue Peter, Mrs. Brown's Boys, CBeebies Presents, Loose Women, From There to Here, Gigglebiz, Swashbuckle, B.O.T. and the Beasties, Something Special, Colourblocks, among others.

2nd Logo (2019-)

Visuals: There's a redesigned version of the foot from the previous logo, which is now next to a rectangular box with the left edge curved. The text "ALBERT sustainable production" in a stacked format, is placed inside the box with "ALBERT" being now in a capitalized Founders Grotesk Bold font.

Variants:

  • The text below "ALBERT" would be sometimes capitalized.
  • Sometimes, the text would be also changed to "carbon neutral sustainable production".
  • An animated version exists where the circle and square with the word "ALBERT" is showing, then the square moves to the circle and forms into the logo.

Technique: A still, digital graphic. 2D computer animation for the animated version.

Audio: Same as before.

Availability: Found on current documentaries and TV shows such as the revival of The Gladiators and A Perfect Planet.
