Background

Sanrio founded their film division in 1977 to produce films; in 1985 Sanrio switched gears and started doing short films, OVAs and TV shows based on their characters.

1st Logo (1977-1981)

Visuals: The Sanrio insignia (a stylized heart shaped like a flower) and the words "SANRIO FILM" are sparkling blue on a black background.

Technique: Camera-controlled animation.

Audio: None.

Availability: It's usually plastered with the 2nd logo. Remains intact on the original Japanese version of Nutcracker Fantasy (1979).

2nd Logo (March 14, 1981-October 19, 1985)

Visuals: The Sanrio insignia draws itself on a dark background and zooms out, along with the words "A SANRIO FILM". As it finishes zooming out, half of the background glows blue, and green light streaks fly out from there.

Variant: There is also a sped-up version.

Technique: Both 80s CGI effects and camera-controlled animation.

Audio: A somber string and horn tune, ending with a majestic flourish.

Audio variants:

  • Sometimes, a majestic fanfare was used.
  • The sped-up variant had only the second part of the tune.
  • The short Kitty and Mimi's New Umbrella had a musical-box theme.

Availability: Seen on films at the time like The Fantastic Adventures of Unico, including newer prints of the ones before it like the US print of Nutcracker Fantasy (1979).
