This article is about the regular idents used by Corporation for Public Broadcasting. For other idents, see Viewers Like You.
The Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) is a non-profit corporation created by the Public Broadcasting Act of 1967, signed into law by U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson on November 7 of that year. It was created to provide partial federal funding for public broadcasting, initially collaborating with National Educational Television (NET) stations before starting their own private non-profit networks, Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) for television and National Public Radio (NPR) for radio.
Variant: On Mister Rogers' Neighborhood episodes from 1993-2001, the byline "A private corporation funded by the American people" (more commonly seen with the 7th logo and beyond) is added.
FX/SFX: None.
Music/Sounds/Voice-over: The text has no music of its own, but on several shows of the era it plays over the opening and closing themes. There are at least three voice-over variations:
Availability: Uncommon.
Logo: On a blue background we see a dark blue emblem consisting of the lowercase letters "c", "p" and "b" stacked together like a mixed-up jigsaw puzzle, and the text "Corporation for Public Broadcasting" written below in a serif font.
Variants:
FX/SFX: None.
Music/Sounds/Voice-over: This logo has no music, but one of the following voice-overs is heard:
Availability: Very rare.
Logo: Just a stylized "cpb" with the company name below. Sometimes, "The Program Fund" will appear above the company name.
FX/SFX: None.
Music/Sounds: Same as the 2nd logo.
Availability: Extremely rare. Seen on some episodes of Great Performances, including a trilogy of adaptations of works by Edith Wharton, and American Playhouse.
Logo: A circle with a stylized "cpb" cut into it on a blue (or black) background, with the phrase:
underneath, in a serif typeface. The logo is a circle with the text "cpb" with the ends of the letters "p" and "b" curved.
Variants:
FX/SFX: None.
Music/Sounds/Voice-over: Same as the 2nd logo.
Availability: Ultra rare. Preserved on 1983-1985 Reading Rainbow tapes. This also appeared on pre-1987 episodes of The MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour, Jukebox Saturday Night, season 1 episodes of The American Experience, and Eyes on the Prize.
Legacy: The logo bears a striking resemblance to the Chuck Barris logo and would continue to go up all the way until 2002.
Logo: Same as the fourth logo, but this time the background is a black/purple gradient. The whole thing also has a drop shadow.
Variants:
FX/SFX: None.
Music/Sounds/Voice-over: Same as the 2nd logo, although a few episodes of Degrassi Junior High lacked the voice-over.
Availability: Ultra rare. Preserved on 1985-1987 Reading Rainbow tapes. This was also used on season 1 episodes of Square One TV, The Ring of Truth, 3-2-1 Classroom Contact, Degrassi Junior High, and Frontline, among others. Also seen on the 1992 rebroadcast of Huey Long, with the 1991 CPB logo following as part of the general funding credits for the rebroadcasts of this and three other Ken Burns classics at the time.
Logo: The whole thing takes place on a space background with stars zooming past. The CPB logo is now in 3-D, and the circle is colored blue and white. First, we see it slowly rotating 90 degrees to the left. After it finishes rotating the words, the name pops up like this:
Variants:
FX/SFX: The stars, and the occasional 90 degree rotation of the CPB circle from the left side of the screen; decent quality CGI. It is unknown, however, which graphics boutique created this.
Music/Sounds/Voice-over: Same as the 2nd logo, often with "...and by the (annual) financial support of viewers like you." or just simply "...and viewers like you.".
Availability: Rare.
Logo: Here are the main variants of this logo:
Variants:
FX/SFX: The lines and the circles sliding. Great animation.
Music/Sounds/Voice-over: Same as the 6th logo. The voice-overs are the same as the first logo.
Music/Sounds/Voice-over Variants:
Availability: Pretty common.
Variants:
FX/SFX: The background.
Music/Sounds/Voice-over:
Availability: Rare, probably the one of rarest of the CPB logos.
Nickname: "CPB in a Square"
Logo: On an aqua background, blue and white dots appear in the center of the screen and pulse out, while streaks run through it. The rings then form the CPB logo, redesigned again with smoother text and is now in a square. The "p" and "b" are connected to the edge of the square. The white then fades out inside the text and 4 streaks run along the edges. The same byline appears underneath in all capitals, but with "CPB.ORG" at the end in blue, which is wiped with a streak.
Variants:
FX/SFX: The blue dots forming the CPB logo.
Music/Sounds/Voice-over: The music consists of a futuristic synth tune as the dots appear, followed by a woodwind note as the CPB logo wipes in. This is followed by an updated version of the 1996 PBS logo's music, performed on brass. (This version is also used for the actual PBS logo on Beyond the Color Line.) The voiceovers are the same as the 7th logo.
Music/Sounds/Voice-over Variants:
Availability:
Logo: On a blue/purple/red ethereal background with silhouettes of random people doing various things, the CPB logo wipes in horizontally (first with the dots, then the text), and the byline from the 9th logo appears. During all of this, the PBS P-Head (the 1989 PBS logo's size) is shown in the background, moving up and down, left and right, etc.
Variants:
FX/SFX: The wiping in of the CPB logo.
Music/Sounds/Voice-over: Several variations of the 2002 PBS logo's music have been used so far. The voiceover is the same as the 8th logo.
Music/Sounds/Voice-over Variants:
Availability: Common.
Logo: On the 2009 PBS logo's bubble background, the CPB logo in white appears via bubbles forming the square while the text zooms out, and the byline from the 9th and 10th logos appears. Then, "Viewers Like You" wipes in left to right, in the PBS Explorer font (similar in style to Interstate). "Viewers Like" is white, and "You" is yellow within a dark rectangle. After a few seconds, "Viewers Like" wipes out right to left and is replaced by "Thank", with "You" shifting to the left to ensure centering just as quickly.
Variants:
FX/SFX: The wiping in of the CPB logo.
Music/Sounds/Voice-over: A variation of the 2009 PBS logo's music. The voiceover is the same as in the previous logo.
Music/Sounds/Voice-over Variants:
Availability: Common.
TBA.
Nickname: "CPB in a Square IV"
Logo: TBA.
FX/SFX: TBA.
Music/Sounds/Voice-over: Usually the same as before, though The Transformational Power of Yoga and Loretta Lynn: My Story in My Words use the extended version of the 2019 PBS logo's "Nature Walk" music variant.
Availability: Brand new. First seen on The Warrior Tradition. May appear on NOVA, Washington Week, PBS NewsHour, Wild Kratts, Arthur, Hero Elementary, Elinor Wonders Why, and some other shows from PBS. Thus far, however, only superimposed and/or static versions are known to exist.
