Background

WLVT-TV is a PBS affiliate located in Allentown, Bethlehem, and Easton, Pennsylvania. The station went on the air on September 1965.

1st (known) Logo (1986-1993)

Nickname: "39 in a Box"

Logo: On a black-blue gradient background, light flares come in from the right, shooting out to the left, forming "WLVT" in Cooper and in a silver color. Next, two lights draw what appears to be a rounded rectangle box, then, three lights flash, making the words "Allentown", "Bethlehem", and "Easton, Pa." on the right side of the box, and a fourth light then flashes in, making the number "39" inside the box, and the logo shines before it freeze-frames.

Variants:

  • For WLVT's productions, this was also used as a opening/closing logo, with "A" and "Presentation" appearing above and below the logo respectively, cheaply inserted in a white Arial font with black shadows.
  • The 25 Years variant was used as a local ID. First, we see "A Silver Year" in a script font named "Brush Script" appears during the shooting lights, followed by "A Golden Future" in a gold script font, and "25 Years". After "39" continues to flash it, "25 Years" moves to the top left, making room and forming the finished 25 Years logo. This is seen only on a 25 Years Special of WLVT-TV, filmed at WLVT Studios, Allentown, Pennsylvania.

FX/SFX: The light effects, plus the cheap chyron fade-in for the production variant. For the 25 Years variant, the text appearing and the text moving. The fact that the logo was made in 1986 makes it extremely dated for its lifetime.

Music/Sounds: There are 2 music variants:

  • A warbly Moog synthesizer tune that repeats four times and gets higher in pitch. A little like the NBC jingle.
  • For the 25 Years variant, the annoucer (possibly Mel Polanski) saying "Watch the best television on the Lehigh Valley around on Channel 39 25 Years special the first it on after the news worn." then ends with a whoosh, a trumpet fanfare and a man and neutral choir singing on the logo.
  • Otherwise, the closing theme of the shows or the opening theme of the shows is heard on the logo.

Availability: Extinct. It was seen on wrestling matches of the era (aired on the station) along with WLVT's local program Tempo.

Editor's Note: None.
