Background

KVIE is a PBS affiliate located in Sacramento, California.

1st Logo (1975-1979)

Nickname: "The Lake"

Logo: We pan up from a lake with trees on the shore at sunset, with the text "A PRODUCTION FROM" and "SACRAMENTO CALIFORNIA" near the bottom right side. A yellow KVIE logo, in a Pac-Man-esque font slides in from the left, and "A PRODUCTION FROM" slides up, as we pan up from the lake.

FX/SFX: The chyron text over the live-action background, the sliding.

Music/Sounds: Unknown.

Availability: This made an appearance on KVIE's 50th anniversary special. Other than that, it's pretty hard to find.

Editor's Note: None.

2nd Logo (1979-1986)

Logo:

  • 1979-1980: On a blue background, we see the word "KVIE6" in the same font as before, but the "I" is capitalized, and "Sacramento/Stockton" is below. All the text is outlined yellow and colored black. The logo stays there for 4 seconds, before fading out.
  • 1980-1986: Over a red fabric-esque background, we see the KVIE logo from before fades in and flashes in slowly. The difference here is the number "6" is absent, the logo is smaller, and the logo is completely white.

FX/SFX:

  • 1979-1980: None.
  • 1980-1986: The fading in and flashing.

Music/Sounds:

  • 1979-1980: A rapid 6-note Moog arpeggio plays, then repeats itself. "Echoes" of the theme begin playing at various times over it, overlapping to the point of cacaphony. As the logo begins to fade out, another copy of the theme, pitched up an octave, begins to repeat as well. This is actually the 12th track of Sound Patterns in Oscillations 4 by Don Voegeli.
  • 1980-1986: Same as the first WJCT logo, but high pitched.

Availability: Seen on Leo Buscaglia's The Art of Being Fully Human.

Editor's Note:

  • 1979-1980: The repetitive synth music, as well as the slightly ugly color scheme/design might put a few off. Otherwise, it is boring and annoying.
  • 1980-1986: None, it's decent.

3rd Logo (1980-1986)

Logo:

  • 1980: We see the word "KVIE" in a diffrent font with the word "Sacramento" below in Helvetica are on a red background (either dark or bright), stays there for almost 6 seconds before fading out. And both the text are in white.
  • 1984: We see the word "KVIE" in the same font before, in silver and 3D (that's looks like a piece of carton), fades in on a blue background. And when the "KVIE" word shines, the word "SACRAMENTO" in blue, Helvetica and in a white outline, fades in.

FX/SFX:

  • 1980: None.
  • 1984: The fading in of both the "KVIE" with the "SACRAMENTO" word, and the "KVIE" word shining. Unimpressive and low quality animation.

Music/Sounds:

  • 1980: An announcer says: "A presentation from KVIE, Sacramento".
  • 1980-1986: None.

Availability: Seen on some Leo Buscaglia's productions for KVIE.

Editor's Note:

  • 1980: None.
  • 1980-1986: None, it's just bad.

4th Logo (1986-1995)

Nickname: "Purple Circle"

Logo: Set on a purple background, we see a purple circle being drawn in counter-clockwise, then a much lighter circle of the same color is drawn in the same direction, and the word "SACRAMENTO" appears. "KVIE" in a Haettenschwelier font then fades in, and the logo shines.

FX/SFX: Simple early CGI animation that is bringing out accuracy.

Music/Sounds: A loud Moog synthesizer bass note that almost sounds like the beginning of the first Cannon-VMP logo's jingle.

Availability: Should be on very old California's Heartland episodes from the George Reading era. It also appeared on Fit or Fat specials.

Editor's Note: None.

5th Logo (1995-November 4, 1999)

Logo: On a green background we see a triangle and the text "A Production of" in blue sliding in, followed by "KVIE" and "SACRAMENTO". The logo then fades out.

FX/SFX: The CGI animation.

Music/Sounds: A two-note tune.

Availability: Seen at the end of KVIE documentaries at the era.

6th Logo (November 5, 1999-2003)

Logo: On a blue background, we see the letters "KVIE" flashing in one-by-one and settling on a triangle. Then, the word "SACRAMENTO" fades in and shines, before the logo fades out.

FX/SFX: The letters appearing.

Music/Sounds: The previous tune.

Availability: Seen at the end of KVIE documentaries.

7th Logo (2003-2006)

Logo: On the background of the 2002 CPB logo, we see the word "KVIE with the P-Head circle logo next to it.

FX/SFX: The animation.

Music/Sounds: The 1995 music.

Availability: Seen at the end of KVIE documentaries.

8th Logo (2006-2009)

Logo: Same as 2002 CPB background we see a blue background when the KVIE text and PBS circling P-Head font era.

FX/SFX: The animation.

Music/Sounds: The 1995 music.

Availability: Seen at the end of KVIE documentaries.

9th Logo (2009-2019)

Logo: On a blue-white-purple background, we see the text "KVIE ".

FX/SFX: The animation.

Music/Sounds: The 1995 music.

Availability: TBA

10th Logo (2019-)

Logo: On a blue background, we see the P-Head circle logo moving to the left to reveal the text "PBS KVIE".
