1st Logo (January 8, 1955-1965)

Visuals: On a grey background, 4 flags are seen in a cross-like formation, drawn to show as it they're flying in the wind. Each of the flags have writing on them, all of it in a serif font:

  • The top flag reads "WOMAN'S COLLEGE".
  • The left flag reads "UNIVERSITY NORTH CAROLINA".
  • The right flag reads "NORTH CAROLINA STATE COLLEGE".
  • The bottom flag reads "CHANNEL 4 TELEVISION".

The first letter for each flag, as well as the "4" is bigger than the rest of the text and are colored white, creating the callsign "WUNC"

Trivia: The "Channel 4 Television" flag was actually used on campus around the logo's usage and is still preserved. More info is seen here [1]

Variant: A more detailed, colored version of this logo exists. The poles are colored gold, and the flags are yellow, blue, red, and green in the order of the callsign.

Technique: A drawing on a card, filmed with a camera.

Audio: None. An announcer was likely used when it was an a local ID.

Availability: Seen on Ideas.

2nd Logo (1971-1980)

Visuals: 2 large white objects, with hints of dark blue and apple green poking through, zoom out from the top and bottom of the screen while creating a trailing effect. Once the objects zoom out into position, the white fog surrounding them fade out and their glow dissipates, revealing the text "unc tv". The logo is in a abstract font that is conjoined and colored dark blue, with the inside of them fill with apple green fillers, and the entire thing has a white outline. The words then drift apart off-screen, leaving enough room for either of the following text to fade in the middle of the screen:

  • Opening: "presents", in the same font as the UNC-TV logo, complete with fillings.
  • Closing: "The University of North Carolina Television Network", in a white ITC Avant Garde font.

Variants:

  • On Me & Stella, and possibly other programs, it starts with the words "from North Carolina" fading in near the bottom of the screen, in ITC Avant Garde, before segueing into the rest of the animation.
  • A local ID version has the logo still and positioned to the left, with "network" shown in an ITC Avant Garde font.

Technique: Scanimation.

Audio: A synthesized harpsichord jingle, ending with a bassoon sounder. Sometimes, its silent. An announcer is heard for the local ID.

Availability: Prints of Woodwright's Shop episodes from the initial local run of the first season should still have this logo. However, when it was released on DVD, only the first episode, "Maul and Glut", retained this logo, with the rest of the season using prints made for the national debut. The local ID was found only recently.

3rd Logo (1978-1983)

Visuals: On a black background, a wallpaper of multiple outlined blue words layered multiple times zooms out, along with the white words "North Carolina" in the middle of the screen. After a second of zooming out, the layers merge together and "North Carolina" flashes brightly, merging together with the background and revealing "The UNC Center for Public Television" in the center of the screen. The background is also multiple layers of the same name. The white letters then fade away to reveal yellow and orange stripes, curved together into a S-like "hurricane" shape, and then shines with pings from top to bottom. The background also changes to a plain dark blue one as this occurs. The word "Presents" flashes in below, and pings appear on the inner corners of the logo.

Variant: A local ID variant has the symbol on a black background, with "The Center" below in white, as well as "Public Television for North Carolina" below in orange.

Technique: Scanimation.

Audio: It starts out with a rising synth sawtooth wave sound, ending with a 9-note synthesized harpsichord fanfare. The local ID has a announcer.

Availability: It's seen on episodes of Woodwright's Shop, which are still aired on UNC-TV affiliates. Was used in tandem with the previous logo for a short time.

4th ID (1983-1990)

Visuals: On a black background, various multi-colored squares appear in a randomized fashion, flashing in the letters for the text "North Carolina Public Television" in the same font as before, stacked on top of each other while arranged to the left side of the screen. An orange square also zooms out to the top right before fading away along with a pink square to the bottom left, and the background gains a dark blue shade at the top of the screen. After all of the letters appear, several more squares appear in sync with the music.

Variants:

  • An extended version has the logo begin with the NCPT symbol zooming out from the center of the screen, fading out as a slight white shade fills the screen and the various squares zoom out and fade in and out at different intervals. The letters then appear in a similar fashion to the main logo but at a slower pace, and then more squares appear in sync with the music. The logo also freezes at the end as the rest of the music plays out.
    • More common short versions has the logo start with either the letters appearing, or with the logo fully formed and the squares appearing. Neither have the ending portion of the music.
  • An variant exists with a dark purple shade at the bottom of the screen, a different pattern for the squares and letters appearing (and an additional purple square zooming out at the beginning), and 2 additional drum beats at the end, complete with squares flashing in.
  • A sign-off ID has the text "The University of North Carolina Center for Public Television" appear at the bottom of the screen. A single pink square appears as the NCPT symbol fades inside of it, and the square fades out as the symbol gains shading.

Technique: Camera controlled animation.

Audio: A three-note xylophone tune, ending with three wooden drum beats.

Audio Variants:

  • The extended version has a different theme in which there is a xylophone jingle, followed by a single "donk" sound, four xylophone notes, two more deep string notes, another "donk", three xylophone notes, and then the first 3 notes of the regular them. The shortened versions have it abridged.
  • The local variant had the theme, without the drum beats, occur when the logo appears.
  • The sign-off ID just has the 3 xylophone notes when the square appears.

Availability: It can be found on old Woodwright's Shop episodes and was also used as a station ID.

5th ID (1990-1992)

Visuals: In a dim environment lit by a light blue spotlight, a thin object is shown resting on top of a dark blue circular table, settled to the left. The object then rotates to the right, revealing the NCPT symbol on it in black, with "NORTH CAROLINA PUBLIC TV", colored powder blue, fading in at the bottom of the screen. The symbol then brightens up to its orange color as the invisible word "Presents" in a serif font, glows white and reveals itself.

Variant: The local ID version has the disc rotating around at the top center of a dark blue/black gradient background, with the letters "N C P T" shining with a purple glow. The disc then slows down as "NORTH CAROLINA PUBLIC TV" fades in below and shines.

Technique: Live action and CGI.

Audio: A three-note synth/guitar tune with a "bling" as "Presents" flashes in. This is extended without the bling on the local ID.

Audio Variant: A low-tone version of the music exists.

Availability: Seen on NCPTV-produced programs from the period. '90s episodes of Woodwright's Shop would be the most likely episodes to find with this logo.

6th ID (1992-1996)

Visuals: On a medium goldenrod/dark red/bluish-gray/orange ethereal background with several streaking lines, panels, and ripples, we see "University of North Carolina" and "PRESENTS" below, both in silver. Then, a yellow rectangle streaks by from right to left, leaving behind another line below it "TELEVISION" fades in on it in black.

Variants:

  • There is a variant used at the end of shows. Against the same background as the opening variant (more or less), we see the text "Produced by University of North Carolina". Below that is "CENTER FOR PUBLIC TELEVISION" on a mango/orange gradient rectangle.
  • An earlier opening variant has the same concept, but one panel wipes in the words "North Carolina Public Television" with the NCPTV logo and "PRESENTS" below inside a black rectangle. The BG also changes to an old mauve/grass green gradient.
  • When used locally, the logo is at the low-bottom corner. The UNC-TV logo and "Learning for a lifetime" fade in below.
  • In 1995, the logo had a 40th anniversary banner.

Technique: CGI.

Audio: A six-note synthesized oboe fanfare.

Availability: Seen on episodes of Woodwright's Shop of the period whenever reran.

7th ID (1996-2007)

Visuals: On a blue background, there is a giant glass square with the stacked words "University of North Carolina Television", and the UNC-TV logo, which consists of the words "UNC" and "TV" in a condensed sans-serif font (possibly Futura) and the UNC-TV symbol between them, below. There is also a line between the text and the logo, which shines all over.

Variants:

  • There's an extended version used as a Local ID, which shows the square turning into place on the background full of moving objects.
  • The background may be in mahogany/copper or in green aqua.

Technique: CGI.

Audio: Either a fanfare with drums, French horns, flutes and a harp, or the end theme of the show.

Availability: It was seen on various shows produced by UNC-TV, such as the first season of The Zula Patrol, as well as a local ID.

8th ID (1996-2005?)

Visuals: On a teal-tinted background with a translucent image of a waving North Carolina flag, a lighthouse's light turning, and the UNC-TV logo, the UNC-TV logo and the word "Presents", both in blue-violet, fade in, along with a distorted white "Presents" in the background.

Technique: CGI.

Audio: Same as the previous logo.

Availability: Seen on Woodwright's Shop episodes of the time.

9th ID (2000-2006)

Visuals: On a black background with tiny white dots, some large dark teal and indigo UNC-TV logos slowly turn around, and the words "UNC-TV" in purple (teal for the logo in between), the UNC-TV logo with white letters and an aquamarine UNC-TV emblem, as well as "PRESENTS..." below, fade in.

Technique: 2D animation.

Audio: Same as the previous logos.

Availability: Seen on Woodwright's Shop episodes of the time.

10th ID (2002?-April 2018)

Visuals: Against a black background, a large capri UNC-TV logo surrounded by a rotating compass-like circle comes into view from the left, rippling constantly. Then, we see several twelve robin egg blue rectangles containing the cities and station numbers which UNC-TV serves flying across the screen from the right. As the S reaches the center of the screen, it blurs away, causing the UNC-TV logo with violet letters and a turquoise emblem, to fade in, along with the URL "www.unctv.org" below.

Variant: From 2002 to mid-2010, it showed eleven stations. It was changed when the Caton transmitter WUNW-TV went on the air on July 21, 2010. In addition, the ID was remastered in 16:9 high definition.

Technique: CGI by Flying Foto Factory.

Audio: A march-like tune with strings (actually an excerpt from "Carolina On My Mind") with an announcer saying various sentences about the station, such as:

  • "You're watching the eleven stations of the University of North Carolina center for public television."
  • "From the mountains to the coast, from east Tennessee to the Hampton Roads region of Virginia, you're watching North Carolina's statewide public television network."
  • "The best in children's programming, science and nature, public affairs, fine arts and how-to shows, and the best coverage of North Carolina statewide."
  • "From the mountains to the coast, over the air, by cable, or via satellite in select areas. You're watching PBS and more for all of North Carolina.".

After a while, the announcer then says "Member supported UNC-TV."

Audio Variant: There are some announcer variants used over the years, such as "This is UNC-TV. Learning for a lifetime.", among others.

11th ID (2006-2018)

Visuals: On a water background, there are two giant, tilted, blue copies of the "S" emblem spins clockwise with rays around it. The one on the right overlaps the one on the left. The UNC-TV logo with a sea green emblem zooms out to the top. Once it gets close enough, "ORIGINAL PRODUCTION" zooms in. If in 4:3, "A" appears on top of the logo. Otherwise, after that, once it stops, a light passes through the text.

Variants:

  • Sometimes, "PRESENTS" substitutes "ORIGINAL PRODUCTION".
  • Two shorter closing versions have "UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA TELEVISION" replacing "ORIGINAL PRODUCTION". One has the finished product, while the other has the logo fade in after a second of the animation. This is also seen during funding credits, opening and closing.
  • The logo may fade out earlier than normal.

Technique: CGI.

Audio: An orchestral fanfare with chimes.

Audio Variant: On at least one episode of The Zula Patrol, the previous logo's music is used.

Availability: Seen on many 2006-2018 UNC-TV productions, such as the 2nd and 3rd seasons of The Zula Patrol.

12th ID (January 1, 2016)

Visuals: There is a forest. The UNC-TV logo with indigo letters and a teal emblem slides from the trees. "ORIGINAL PRODUCTION" fades in.

Technique: CGI.

Audio: Same as the previous logo.

Availability: Only seen on a My Home NC episode titled "BILTMORE: OUR DOWNTON | Asheville, NC".

13th ID (2018-January 12, 2021)

Visuals: On a white background with several sketchy lines, pieces of the UNC symbol in teal come from both sides, with the "UNC-TV" text being wiped in by the other pieces. The symbol then rotates and zooms out to its usual position.

Variants:

  • As a local ID, the logo is set beside a large teal square, which it rotates into position. On the square, the 12 station's callsigns, numbers, and locations slide in one by one.
  • For the opening of programs, the logo, already formed, zooms out and slides to the left, while "ORIGINAL Production" slides out to the right in teal.

Technique: 2D animation.

Audio: Unknown
