Background

WGTE-TV is a PBS affiliate located in Toledo, Ohio that was founded on October 10, 1960 as an NET affiliate until 1970. It also has a radio station named after the network.

1st Logo (1977-1993)

Visuals: On a plain white background, there is the blue, lower-case wordmark "wgte" in a rather scratchy cursive font. Below it, there is the word "TV TOLEDO", which morphs into "PRESENTS".

Technique: Analog computer animation.

Audio: None.

2nd Logo (Late 1980s-1992?)

Visuals: On a black-blue gradient background is a silver PBS logo and a silver "30" next to it. "WGTE TOLEDO" in a typewriter font is seen below.

Technique: A still, computerized graphic.

Audio: A male announcer saying "WGTE, TV 30, Toledo."

Audio Variant: On the May 1, 1992 episode of The McLaughlin Group, the male announcer says "Discover television worth watching, on WGTE-TV 30. Public television in Toledo.", then a quiet guitar tune is heard (which is actually "Time Marches On" by John Scofield).

Availability: Seen as a local ID.

3rd Logo (1992?-unknown retirement year)

Visuals: Over a tan marble background is the word "WGTE" in white, with "TV30" in dark blue. A dark blue line is under them, below it are the words "PUBLIC BROADCASTING" in white, and the word "T O L E D O" is on the bottom.

Technique: A still, computerized graphic.

Audio: None.

Availability: It was seen on a January 22th, 1993 episode of The McLaughlin Group.

4th ID (2003-2012?)

Visuals: On a swirly icterine background are the letters "wgte" in a giant Franklin Gothic font with "TV 30" in white under "te". Below it is "TOLEDO, OHIO" in white.

Variant: A special "Happy 50th Birthday" variant was commissioned when this ident was launched. It shows very brief clips of various WGTE idents that were used from 1953-2003 (marking 50 years) wiping in and out via a radar effect, before wiping into the aforementioned ident.

Technique: 2D computer animation.

Audio: Same as the 8th CPB ident. A male announcer says "You're watching WGTE, celebrating 50 years in Toledo." In the 50th anniversary variant, a "beep" sound is heard each time the radar wipe occurs.

Availability: Used as a local ID only.

5th ID (2012?-)

Visuals: On a rough blue-red gradient background, a ball of light appears moving in an oval formation, then bursts into a flash, revealing the WGTE logo from before. The light returns and forms an oval line around the logo, while "TOLEDO" expands below. The light disappears at the end.

Variant: A local ID version has the logo form in flat 2D in blue, and is positioned to the right of local footage, all in the white center-third of a green background.

Technique: 2D computer animation.

Audio: A short, poppy synth theme.

Availability: Seen on War of 1812 in the Old Northwest, Wildwood: Land as Good as Gold and Toledo Stories, among other shows.
