Background

WPSU (previously WPSX) is a PBS affiliate based in Clearfield, PA under the Pennsylvania State University license and located in Altoona, Johnstown, State College, and Dubois, Pennsylvania to as far north as Olean and Wellsville, NY.

Note: Prior to 2005, the Altoona-Johnstown, Pennsylvania market's PBS affiliate had an "X" as its fourth call letter.

1st Logo (1985-1996)

Visuals: On a black background, the silver text "WPSX" fades in. It's in a futuristic font, with a light blue stripe spanning across the middle of it. As it fades in, a blue light quickly wipes across it and "PENNSTATE" quickly fades in below.

Technique: Motion-controlled animation.

Audio: The same synth fanfare used in WIPB's logo, which is actually "Logo #7," a track from the Omnimusic library.

Availability: It can be found on What's in the News? and The Pennsylvania Game, which are local programs and may be seen if they get rerun (or on tapes).

2nd Logo (1996-May 24, 2005)

Visuals: On a green to black gradient background, the text WPSX can be seen. Immediately as the logo starts fading in, the words "Making Life Better" appear on screen, letter by letter. After this finishes, the WPSX logo glows and a bell noise is heard. After this, the logo fades out.

Technique: 2D digital animation.

Audio: The bird chirping noise at the start (though this might not be part of the closing logo), and the bell noise made when the WPSX logo ends up glowing. Note the two piano notes at the beginning of the video, which are not part of the closing logo itself but rather the ending of the theme played over the credits of the documentary this was found on.

Availability: This was found on content created and aired by WPSX at the time, though not all content either. The only known program it could be found on are recordings of the documentary "Save Our Land, Save Our Town".

3rd Logo (May 25, 2005-May 25, 2010)

Visuals: On a cloudy sky background is the text "A Presentation of WPSU Pennstate" flipping in, then the logo fades out.

Technique: 2D digital animation.

Audio: A 7-note tune, similar to the 1993 KPBS-TV jingle.

Availability: Seen at the end of WPSU-TV painting shows and at the beginning of local shows.

4th Logo (May 26, 2010-July 27, 2015)

Visuals: On a green background with clouds, we see the WPSU-TV logo next to the P-Head. The text "Pennstate" fades in slowly, then the text "presents" fades in.

Variant: There is a short variant of this logo with the text "Presentation" fading in slowly.

Technique: 2D digital animation.

Audio: A 9-note cello tune, followed by a 5-note orchestral tune with violins at the end. The short version uses a four-note synth tune, similar to the 1999 CTV News jingle.

Availability: Seen at the beginning of local shows. The short version is seen at the end of painting shows.
