Background

West Virginia Public Broadcasting (WVPB) is the public television and radio state network serving the U.S. state of West Virginia. The 1st station to go on the air was WVPB-TV in 1969 (formerly WMUL-TV, and then WPBY-TV).

1st Logo (1976-1978)

Logo: Just the text "WMUL-TV" in a western-like font over a picture of some hills. Flowers can be seen on the bottom of the screen.

FX/SFX: None.

Music/Sounds: The opening theme of the program.

Availability: Extinct.

Editor's Note: None, this is a tame (albeit boring) logo, especially compared to its successor...

2nd Logo (1978-1981)

Logo: On a black background, 2 yellow waves draw in at the same time. 2 more also draw in, but get bigger as well, with the left wave drawing the upper half of West Virginia. Below the shape, "West Virginia Public Broadcasting" fades in below, along with "WMUL".

FX/SFX: The logo drawing itself in, the words appearing.

Music/Sounds: An eerie modular synth arpeggio, similar to the tune played in the Converge Video logo.

Availability: Seen on Sugar in the Gourd.

Editor's Note: The bad Scanimation, dark atmosphere, and creepy music could make this logo a particularly unnerving affair for children. Ranks alongside the 1976 KWSU and 1971/1974 WGBH logos as public broadcasting idents featuring notoriously eerie synth music.
